Market 384: Sprint Veloce Zagato 1493*06184 at auction

Update 5/30/12: Sold for 414,400 Euro’s, about $546,000!

2/13/12: Giulietta Sprint Veloce ‘Zagato’ 750E 1493*06184, 1315*30851.  This very interesting SVZ is going to be auctioned by RM in Monaco soon.  While most cars I write about are straight forward subjects, and anything I say should be taken as insightful mainly due to heavy exposure to the subject if nothing else, and as being typically off the cuff.   A car like this demands careful consideration and wording.  Why?  The genuine article -a Zagato re-bodied Sprint Veloce, that was re-bodied ‘back in the day’ i.e. the late 1950’s, is a very valuable car.  See this thread on the AlfaBB for some lengthy but enjoyable reading on the subject.  Interestingly, this car is listed as MIA since 1960.  It’s important to note that there was no search party out looking for it -it just stayed under the radar since then.  So, with a spirit of caution, I start, and will reserve my comments to ‘ooh’s and ahh’s’ once more.

That is one desire-able object!  Note squared off wheel openings.  Hood is a low as they could practically make it and still fit the engine.  Color scheme is bold -red headlining is fantastic.  Any significance to that license plate number? Wheels look to be period cast wheels -magnesium?  This is pretty close to the top of the Giulietta food-chain.

Market 381: SS 177325 Retired Scuderia Del Portello race car

Giulietta Sprint Speciale 10120*177325.  This car wears Milano plates and is available from Luzzago right now.  There are many pictures of it racing from 1987 – 1996, after which it was retired, set up for street use and apparently given somewhat of a restoration.  There is no asking price stated for this car.  Check out the link in the vin above -lots of pictures of this car racing1

There are a lot of pictures like this -blurry race shots that evoke days gone by and racing fun.  Fergats have a reputation for breaking under heavy use.  I wonder if this guy suffered any breaks?

Market 380: restored Sprint Zagato in Italy

Giulietta Sprint Zagato.  Sharing warehouse space with yesterdays SZCT in Italy, and also on offer on Autoscout is this very clean Sprint Zagato.  Asking price is €300,000, a lot of money for a little car, but these have always been 2 to 3 times the cost of a Sprint Veloce Lightweight, so maybe comparatively speaking they have lost a little ground.  Not enough of these change hands to form a basis for a sound cost analysis, so the money has to be relative to your ability to buy it.  As with yesterdays SZCT, I’m far form expert so will reserve my commentary to appreciation for design -always a safe ground to stand on with Zagato products of the 50’s and 60’s.

A very potent race car in its day.  Short, low and light.  Zagato had a head start on the design since they had converted crashed cars into Sprint Veloce Zagato’s for customers, with the final iterations being VERY similar in appearance to the Alfa sanctioned SZ seen here.  Period alloy wheels?

Market 379: Sprint Zagato Coda Tronca in Italy

Giulietta Sprint Zagato ‘Coda Tronca’.  Elmar sent me a link to this car on Autoscout, for sale out of Italy for €270,000.  They made about 200 SZ’s, the last handful of which were ‘Coda Tronca’ (CT is how I abbreviate it other places) with the Kamm tail.  I have no authority to say anything about these cars, so will keep the commentary to a lot of ‘oohs’ and ‘aaahs’.  Anyone know the VIN of this car?

A handsome critter.  Note they figured out how to incorporate a wind deflector into the hood.  I wonder if it also provides pressure relief for the engine compartment like the louvers on an SS hood?  Helps keep the front end from getting light at speed.  That nose is like a big egg; white, bulbous and extremely fragile.  No parallel parking allowed in a car like this.

Interesting parts: set of 5 early production Fergat wheels 1365.52.810

Giulietta part number 1365.52.810 -Disc wheel – Fergat 4 1/4 J x 15 CZ.  This full set of early ‘rolled lip’ Fergats is on eBay right now.  Asking price is $1500, steep seeming, but when rarity and condition are weighed, probably a pretty good deal -especially if you need a set for your 1956 Sprint!  The parts book makes no mention of an early/late style for these, so a cut off point for production is tough to pin down.  Anyone have a car with these and care to share a vin?  Parts book says each car uses a quantity 2 -humorous typo.

Imagine these on your car!  Fresh wheels do a lot for the impression a car makes on you.  BMW Polaris silver?

Market 373: Spider 10123 -super clean

Update 1/23/12: Alex contacted the seller and the stats are: Giulia Spider 1600 AR10123*378512, 00112*33388.  Thanks Alex!

Giulia Spider 1600 10123.  This car is available on Hemmings out of South Carolina for $39,500.  Seller is listing it for a late friend – I presume for the estate.  Condition looks really good, with some non-original touches that don’t really detract unless you’re a serious purist.

I like how clean the lines are in white -and when the rest is all blacks and silvers, it lends an almost clinical beauty.  Hood and door fit well.  Chromed wheels may have been a dealer add-on.

Market 368: Spider 750D 01969 in Germany -super clean!

Giulietta Spider 750D 1495*01969, 1315*41915.  This car is available now out of Germany on Classic Driver.  Condition is very good with matching numbers and what appears to be all the right parts.  There are a lot of these early Spiders on the market right now, but few offer no excuses turn-key performance and high level finish like this car.  Asking price is 47,999 Euro’s or about $61,000.  Lots of restoration information can be found here.

I like them in this dark red.  That big money RHD car out of Australia was a similar color.  I can’t find fault with it in this picture other than the oddly shaped rear view mirror.

Market 363: Spider 750D 00033 in Sweden

Giulietta Spider 750D 1495*00033.  Henrik wrote to inform me that this car was available in Sweden for 349,000 SEK, or about $50,500 at the time of writing.  The car was sold by Jo Bonnier to Prince Bertil Bernadotte, Great Uncle to the current Swedish King.  Engine is said to be the original one, but it sports Webers now.  If you’re in the market for a very early number car, then this might be for you -doesn’t hurt that the asking price of this car is less than a lot seen recently.

Light blue is charming as always.  Door an hood fit look excellent.  All the trim fits well.  A nice car.

Market 309: Stunning Celeste Spider Veloce 750F 03861

Update 1/6/12: I feel like I’m watching a rocket take off at Cape Canaveral.  This car has been listed by Colin’s Classic Cars in Milwaukee for $125,000.  It looks like some work has been done to tighten it up but it didn’t seem to need anything the last time it sold. It remains stunning and it remains one of the best I’ve had the pleasure of writing about.

Can this car have appreciated $54,900 in 7 months?  I hope we find out, and hold on to your hat if it has.

Market 360: SS 381261 in Burlingame

1/4/12: I have it from several sources that this car has been sold.

Giulia SS 10121*381261.  Kip sent me an email to let me know this SS is available now from Cammisa motors in Burlingame for $89,000.  Car was a German market car, not sure if it had any final assembly done there like the earlier Giulietta’s that NSU did final prep on.  Color Combo is excellent.  Seems to be priced fairly considering some of the project prices seen this year.

That’s a handsome creature!  Good color, good panel fit, great trim fit and clean.  Anyone have $90K I can borrow?
