Market 177: 1600 Spider “precisely restored to correct factory standards”

Update 1/24/10 (2010/01/24 for you non-US based date readers): This car sold for $75,000 plus 10% buyers premium.  This is very strong money -above and beyond what anyone I have run into estimated.  Reminds me of the Triumph TR4 that sold at auction a few years ago for $100K.  As I mentioned below, there are people for whom this kind of money is lunch money, and they only want perfect cars.  I wonder if it would have even made a difference if it was a 1600 Veloce.  Maybe a little is my guess.

Giulia Spider 1600 10123*379814, 00112*12842. This Spider will be auctioned off by Gooding Company at their Scottdale Az. Auction happening Jan. 22nd and 23rd.  Description is rich with details and as I read it I imagine Allen De Cadenet reading it to me while powering around a circuit in it with is hair blowing around and the exhaust note just loud enough that he has to raise his voice.  Let’s have a look at this “precisely restored to correct factory standards” car.

So far so good, looking amazing in professionally photographed ripose.  Door and hood fit very well, trim is all symmetrical, shiny and to a matched standard with the red paint.  I never saw one at the dealer, but I’m willing to bet this is better than new. Spider market review 2008

(I wrote this introduction first but am posting it last…) In order to organize the rampant chaos that my old posts are subject to, I have decided to do 2008 Market Reviews.  The 2009 Spider review aggregation was so much work I dreaded doing 2008, even thought of skipping it but in the end decided I had to do it.  Glad I did considering it ended up being only 9 cars.  You’re welcome.

Spider Market review 2009

It has been on my mind as I write the other 2009 market reviews that the Spider review is going to take some time to complete, there having been a lot of Spider sales in 2009. I am thinking this will be my longest post ever. I think this will be helpful to anyone buying, selling or trying to figure out the future value of restoration work. Enjoy!

Market 39 was 10104 1495*11267, selling for $2025 after a year of eBay runs. I think the difficulty with this car was location and portability. Market 173: 1:1 scale Spider model kit

Update 12/31/09: Sold for $5200 after 10 bids were placed.  A pretty good deal considering the parts haul.

Giulietta Spider 10103 1495*09829, 00102*15510. This car, produced 24 cars after a car that was manufactured on May 2nd 1960 by the factory records, is on eBay out of Rancho Cucamonga California. There is a pretty enthusiastic write up with the auction but I think the pictures speak for themselves.

I love these scenes, like a swap meet display or the hotel scene in ‘The Wall’. I could spend 30 minutes with a blown up picture identifying most of the parts, but then you wouldn’t get the fun of doing it yourself with a parts book in front of you when you receive your new baby.

Market 172: Giulietta Spider 1495*05689 at the gallery

Giulietta Spider 1495*05689.  This car, an early 1959 interim model, is available right now from The Gallery, Brummen in the Netherlands.  The gallery looks like a big museum where you can buy the display pieces.  The stock on their website ranges from the mundane to the impressive with prices to match.  Hopefully someday I can make it there for a look around.  Someone should do something like that here in the USA.  On to the star of the show…

I chose this one for cousin Norm since it has a BMW 2000CS in the background.  Spiders look very sophisticated in white -like a guy who is always wearing a tuxedo.  Front side marker tells me it’s a European market car.  From this distance and at this resolution the car looks very nice.

Market 128: Red Spider 10123*379964 looking for action

Update 12/8/09: This car is back in play, this time at Dearborn Classic Cars for $23,995. It has supposedly been gone through by an Alfa expert near the seller and needs nothing except a new home.

Color is a little better this time around. Still looks like a pretty good car.

Unremarkable, sits about right. Door lines are invisible but I would expect that from such a low res. picture.

Update 7/9/09: 7 days and 36 bids later this car sold for $14,500. I am going to say well bought unless it arrives as a bondoed over rust bucket, which it doesn’t really look like.

Giulia Spider 1600 10123*379964. This red Spider is on eBay right now and being sold out of Willits Ca, about 2 hours north of the Bay Area. Pictures, description etc is minimal so I presume they are hoping to drum up some local interest. Looks like a decent car, hopefully they are not looking for $50K or someother unrealistic amount.

Market 166: Scruffy but nice early Spider

Giulietta Spider 1495*02713.  This car has been on Bringatrailer, Craigslist and Alfa BB.  It may be still available, but I doubt it.  This car is a 1957 which makes it elligible for events not open to 58 and later cars.  Car is in San Diego and asking price of $14,000 is reasonable if it needs as little as the sellers description indicates.  I am primarily adding this car for posterity.

This is how you like to find them.  Straight, dry and in need of the kind of improvement that is fun to do between drives.  Hood and door fit looks excellent.  I don’t see any evidence of rust.

Market 165: Used car lot Interim Spider -nice!

Update 11/30/09: 21 bidders, $27,000, reserve met.  A good result!

Giulietta Spider 10103*10786. This car is on eBay right now out of Illinois. Car is an interim car falling right in the middle of 1960 production range for 10103 Spiders. Title year being one after production is the norm for these cars in the US. Car is said to be all restored and from a long time (28 years) owner.

The source of my title: the big 61 used car lot style window sticker. Front of the car looks great. Hood fits perfectly, chrome is exemplary and paint looks wet it’s so shiny. Wipers are higher on the windshield than I would recommend. At this height they would chatter in the wind and scuff the glass.

Market 164: Another Spider racer roller

Update 12/5/09: This car sold for $5025. I would have to see the quality of the paint in person but this seems like a pretty good price for a car you can just start bolting parts onto. 

Giulietta Spider 10103*170861.  This car is on eBay right now out of New York. Seller says it’s a 1600 and it has a 1600 hood, but the vin number stated is that of a tipo 10103 1300. No big deal, it’s not going to get restored any time soon. 

170861 corner The car looks pretty good.  Wheel wells look to have been flared slightly.  Cage is pretty substantial.  Wheels are 105/115 era BWA’s I believe.  I kind of like these wheels and would put them on the 69 GTV given the chance.

Market 163: Interim Spider racer project

Update 12/5/09: This car sold for $5000 even.  Seemingly the new norm for incomplete unremarkable Giulietta Spider rollers.

Giulietta Spider 1495*09110.  This car is on eBay right now from a seller in the north east US who seems to have a lot of Giulietta stuff in their barn.  This car is said to have been a long time race car, but seems to only be stickers, stripes and a roll bar away from being your usual remainder of a parted out Spider- very solid and rust free remainder I should add.

spider 09110 cornerRace number might help explain why it ended up years later stripped on anything of value and sold off.  Front looks tough with the bumper brackets and blanks where the signal lights go.  Certainly sits low for a car with no engine, supporting the race car claim.
