Market 186: rusty Spider project 10103 170124

Update 4/8/10: Failing the eBay route this car has been listed on Craigslist for $3000.  There has been some discussion on the 750-101 group all to the effect that it’s too much money.  The seller got very little for the drivetrain parts they sold before selling the car, so it’s starting to look like they should have kept it all together.  Some rube will probably buy it and then start the cycle anew on eBay , but at $5000.  Sigh.

Update 3/29/10: This car is back on eBay with lots more and better pictures, bidding has reached $2995 with one bid and it looks as though there is no reserve.  Maybe this fellow has found a new home.

Update 2/16/10: No bids, no buyer.  Patience friend Spider -you’ll have your day.

Giulietta Spider 10103 170124. This car is on eBay right now out of Oregon.  Seller has been auctioning off a lot of the little parts over the last couple of weeks and now the rest of the car has to go.  I just noticed this car was listed 7 minutes after the Sprint in market 185.  Odd how the world works.  Opening bid is $3995.  No takers as yet.

Looks like the typical scrappy parts car layed up 20 years ago and now maybe worth enough to be promoted from parts car to project.  We’ll see.  Lots of good parts to be seen, but all need some love to be viable.

Market 204: Giulietta Spider to enjoy or rerestore

Update 4/26/10: 26 Bids with a high of $14,801 was enough to see this car repatriated to Italy where it will probably see a little correction.  About right for buyer and seller.

Update 4/7/10: This car is now listed on eBay with yet more good pictures (which are now permanently here on Flickr).  It has problems but again, looks like a solid enough driver that if moved to a dry climate might never need further repair.  I’d certainly drive it as-is.

Update 3/26/10:  A bunch of pictures were posted on the AlfaBB and the seller is looking to make a deal.  The condition is as described.  Make an offer!

“1960 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider AR1495-10301. The engine is a later production Giulia unit 00112-14908 (Compression 178, 174, 180, 171). The transmission is a four speed (second gear is fine). The car underwent an amateur restoration in the mid 1990’s. The trunk floor was replaced and the rear driver’s floor patched. The repairs are serviceable, but not of a high quality. The car has a 10 foot paint job. The outer rockers are starting to rust at the wheel wells. There are a handful of very small perforations in the floors. All trim is present with the exception of the license plate lights and the trunk lock, which is inoperative.. The chrome work is fair with some dents in both bumpers. There is no top, but the complete top frame is with the car. This spider presents itself well and is a good driver with 4 new Vredestein 155/15 tires. The brakes have been rebuilt with all new seals and the radiator and Solex carb have been rebuilt. The car can be enjoyed as is or it would be an excellent candidate for a full restoration. Please call for a more complete description. I have many high resolution photos of the car including the floors and trunk. 607-745-6482 cell. The car is located in Cortland, NY, 30 miles south of Syracuse. Price $15,000. I would consider an interesting trade, preferably an Alfa or Lancia.”

Giulietta Spider 10103*10301, 00112*14908 (not original). This Spider is listed on Hemmings right now for $15,000.  Price is decent if you don’t care about trying to fix the flaws described in the ad text such as poor rust repairs to trunk and bubbles forming in the rockers.  If it runs and drives, I say use it and fix it little by little along the way.

Seller describes it as a 10 footer paint job and I have to agree -looks really good here.  Complete, presentable and ‘right’ looking.

Market 209: Nice red Giulietta Spider

Update 4/26/10: 32 bids were placed and $27,201 was the highest.  Middle of the road for one of these in this condition.  I think inclusion of the original engine would have helped a little but this is about what they are going for…

Giulietta Spider 750D 1495*07104.  This car is listed on eBay out of Troy Michigan, no doubt hoping to ride the coat tails of Market 206’s $45,400 result for a nice red Giulietta Spider normale.  This car looks good in the pictures but they are of somewhat low resolution and without the sellers name recognition of the 206 Spider, it is unlikely to be bid up quite as high.  I am pleased to finally be able to incorporate something in the spirit of my ‘Pushing Product’ series here.

This is called ‘selling the dream’.  The red convertible, the hot chick, and a seemingly warm summer day.  Not sure what the train signifies, but I’m sure I’ll think of something.  Car sits just right and the panel gaps look good.  Of course the first question in the Q&A section of the auction was regarding the possible inclusion of the girl -maybe in another arguably less civilized country…

Market 201: clean 1600 Spider in Florida

Update 4/26/10:  Car has been sold as of 4/4/10.  I imagine the selling price was a little shy of the asking, perhaps about $26k?

Giulia Spider 10123*373471, 00112*15253. This car is currently listed as for sale on the Alfa BB out of Florida.  Asking price is $28,500 which includes a Pininfarina hard top to be restored and an original Giulia Spider hood.  I would call this restored to very nice driver condition.  Not necessarily original or perfect but attractive and usable.

The money shot for sure, like a mature super model in sunsets orange glow.  Remember that this is what the average person sees before you go and pick the details that are not perfect apart.

Market 200: Original Spider 10104 at Hyman

Giulietta Spider 10104 1495*08888. This car is available right now out of St. Louis Mo. at Hyman Ltd.  Hyman seems to only deal in pretty good cars and their prices are usually fairly reasonable.  This Spider is no exception at $29,500.

I’ve looked at a lot of pictures of cars photographed in this corner.  The paint has some patina, as does the trim and top, but I like this sort of thing.  Makes for a nice car that is not too nice to use.

Market 199: Hard work done 750D Spider project

Update 3/16/10: 2 bids, $5101, no sale.  Would have been a bargain at this price.  I’ll have to ask if it’s still available.

Giulietta Spider 750d 1495*06473. This Black Plate car is on eBay right now out of Southern California. Seller is not the owner but I know him through the Alfa world and he’s an upstanding guy and not a car dealer so everything in the description should be taken at face value. Starting bid of $5000 is very reasonable considering the effort required to get a car into this condition and ready for final prep and paint. Sure, lots of little stuff needs doing -just about everything in fact, but none of it looks that bad.

This looks very good. Nose features are well defined and this is without filler. Door fit looks good, hard to say about the hood.

Market 188: Spider 1600 372427 project in Italy

Giulia Spider 10123*372427, 00112*00662. This car, like the Sprint in market 187, is available in Italy from Ghibli Auto Classiche in Umbria.  No details are available on their website, but enough pictures are posted to form an opinion.  This is a typical example of your ‘fairly complete but needs a lot’ restoration basis.

Curiously both this car and the Sprint they have on offer are missing left hand side headlights.  Grill bar from the same side is missing as well.  One of the three cars in this picture are what generally come to mind when an American of a certain age sees or hears the words ‘foreign sports car’, and they are taken aback when told there are coupe versions of these cars.

Market 162: Another Spider slips through the cracks

Update 2/2/10: 3 months, $800 worth of shipping, a $125 detail job and $75 worth of title transfer and this car is back on eBay, now out of Florida. The opening bid of $28,500 represents a hefty profit of $13,500 if my estimates are good, and if you buy it now for $39,800, the seller can take a few months off. I’ve said it before -I’m in the wrong business.

Giulia Spider 1600 10123*373358. This Spider sold on eBay recently for $14,000. Based on the uninspired auction description it sounds like the seller inherited the car and never thought or did much with it.

spider 373358 frontThis car looks really good. The trim has a good shine, as does the paint, and the curves are all going the right way. Someone took good care of this car at some point.

Market 183: 10103 Spider kit 169178

Update 2/11/10: Auction ended with no bids.  Not surprising considering the lack of pictures of the parts.  I’d rewrite the auction, reconsider the pictures, include an inventory and try again.

Giulietta Spider 10103*169178. This car, with its very odd selection of pictures is on eBay right now with an opening bid of $4995.  It is pretty far apart and none of the parts are pictured, but the shell looks good, with only a little surface rust accenting the bright blue paint.  It’s amazing how many Spiders there are in this condition!

Looks about right.  Floors are solid and the hard to find lower seat tracks are present.  Steering wheel is without cracks.  Good starting point for a thousand hour trek. Continue reading “Market 183: 10103 Spider kit 169178”

Market 154: Another Spider roller, this time a 101

Update 1/27/10: Well wonder no more, this car is now on Italian eBay for 8900 Euros or $12,478 at time of writing.  I guess a trip across the Atlantic and the addition of a mystery 750 engine adds $9500.  I’m in the wrong business.

Update 10/20/09: 11 bids got this thing to $3100. Not bad for a rolling shell. The lack of rust had me thinking $4000. I wonder where it is headed?

Giulietta Spider 10103 1495*10862. This car is on eBay right now out of Livorna New York.  There are at least 2 eBay sellers that regularly post vintage Alfa parts for sale form this town.  This car is pretty similar body-wise to the subject of Market 153, but doesn’t come with much in the way of parts if they’re not seen in the pictures and attached to the car.

spider 10862 noseLooks about average really for one of these that has been off the road for ever and picked over by vultures during that time.  Nose sheetmetal is rough but I’ve seen and owned rougher.   There are a lot of little parts here, so it could be worse.
