Market 359: Spider 09537 New York

Update 4/20/13: Hard to argue with the same result twice.

Screen Shot 2013-04-20 at 12.00.41 PM

Update 3/31/13: This car has turned up on eBay again.  Although it has been 14 months since it was listed, the same pictures are being used.  I don’t think the market for a Spider like this has moved up much, so I suspect a similar result to the last time.  I like the last line of the ebay description: “Look close, see the reserve? See the buy it now? I didn’t think so, there is NOT a buy it now, and the reserve is private. That’s how I thought it worked. I am an honest guy, selling an honest car, running this AUCTION honestly. I don’t want to play any games. Thank you.”  I’m not sure how effective coming across as prickly is as a first impression, but then the notion of an ‘online persona’ is generally accepted.

Update 1/9/12: $15,101 is the sale price after 5 bids.  That’s pretty solid money.

Giulietta Spider 10104*09537. This Spider is on eBay out of New York with a starting bid of $8,000.  Condition is pretty reasonable as the start of a light ‘run it as is’ type project.  Seller says it doesn’t run currently and has had some floor repairs.  It comes with a hardtop that is one of the made in California FiberFab (??) type.  I like the license plate!

It really doesn’t look bad.  It could be the basis of a decent driver without much fuss.  The engines can always be made to run, but will probably require a minor overhaul.  I like them without the grill ‘eyebrows’..

Market 65: same old sad story 61 Spider

Update 3/25/13: Hard to believe it, but this is the same car after several years of restoration work.  Bravo!  It can be done.

Great work has been accomplished on this car.  I think this started out as one of those borderline hopeless projects.

Update12/2/08:  This car ended at $4606, reserve not met.  I predicted $4500 so I’d be the big winner on The Price is Right and win my choice of a brand new Ford Escort wagon, a Mercury Sable or a kick in the head by a steel-toed boot.  Do I get a shot of Whiskey first?  I digress… If I was the seller I’d be willing to let this car go to the high bidder for the end bid if they were willing.  Of course they probably paid $7000 for it, thinking it was super rare and valuable but not taking the nonexistant economy into account.  Look for the follow up.

Giulietta Spider AR1495*11804.  This car is available right now on eBay out of Medfield MA.  Fusi lists this car as a 10103 series 1960 Spider, that year production ending with car 11900.  This car would be the perfect companion piece to the rusty Sprint that was the subject of Market #58 both needing extensive rust repair and well… everything else.

sad giulietta spider noseI have a great idea, I’ll do an experiment to see what 20 years under a blue tarp in a cold wet climate will do to a car, and not just any car, I’ll find a really clean Alfa Spider.  This is truly sad.  Note that all the trim, with the exception of one headlight ring, is present and straight.

Market 464: Abarth – Alfa – Colani 1000

Update 2/14/13: As they must, things seem to always come around.  Henrik pointed out that this car is now on offer for (gulp) €380,000!  Quite a bit more than the auction estimate of a few years ago.  Is this crazy?  I don’t really think so.  A unique (refreshing to be able to use that word without hyperbole) rebody of an already very special car with an Abarth Tubular chassis, Alfa race intended engine rework to 1000cc etc.  It’s a styling that works for some and doesn’t for others -like an Yves St Laurent masterpiece (for seldom do masterpieces satisfy all lookers or readers or…).  It’s kind of a shame that both cars can’t exist.  Do any of the other original Abarth examples survive?

Eddy sent me this image among some others from Retromobile.  I guess the mismatched wheels are period and thus the way it has to be.

Market 390: untouched and reasonably preserved Spider Veloce 10125 11332

Update 3/2/13:  Seller pulled the auction making me think it either didn’t seem like it was going to recoup their investment if the no reserve auction was allowed to play out, or they sold it off eBay.  Not sure which is more likely…

Update 2/9/13: This car is available again on eBay out of Santa Barbara from someone who knows their Alfa’s if the garage it’s in is any indication.  I had this listed as 11337, but it’s 11332.  Looks pretty good all cleaned up!

IMG_3268_zps4a6d6383

Scrappy.  Just needs some work and a few rare parts like the firewall mounted air box.

Giuliettas.com T-shirts -back by popular demand

Update 2/3/13:  After some delays around toddler sized T-shirts I should have the big box of T’s in hand and start shipping them to all of you who preordered.  I have sold about half of them and have very limited quantities left, so if you want a shirt -especially a medium or large -speak now…

The source of the image!

Update 1/3/13: It’s that time again -I’m going to order a batch of T-shirts.  This years edition will be black in honor of the two Sprint’s I’ve been working on for the last few months.  So…  Who wants them, how many and what size?  Email me at sprints at Giuliettas dot com what you want and when I have a good sized order together I’ll place it.  $22 each plus shipping this time..

Like this -only black!

Market 421: Restored Speciale 177413 at Fantasy Junction

Update 2/2/13:  The beat goes on.  This guy, failing to generate much interest in the 2012 auction season is back at Fantasy Junction with new pricing: $169,500.

Good to see a picture from Fantasy Junction that’s not in front of the brick wall.

Update 8/23/12: No bids were placed at the minimum $135,000 buy in on this car so it went unsold. I wonder if it was the color combo, or lack of originality in the interior -or that the windows wouldn’t easily go up and down (they didn’t when I checked it out at FJ) or if a lot of people knew it was purchased from FJ to be sold at this auction and make a quick buck. Do any of these things matter when a potential bidder has 5 Gin and Tonic’s helping their hand up? I dunno.

Update 7/1/12: In case you missed out on buying it from FJ, you now have a chance to get it from Russo and Steele who will auction it during the old car festivities in Monterey this year.

Yes George, the drivers side rear wheel is a Fergat (and so is the spare) and the rest are Borrani’s.  I guess a high selling price doesn’t cure this sort of ailment.

Update 5/28/12: Car was initially listed for $142,500 and sold immediately for $135,000.

Giulietta Sprint Speciale 10120*177413, 00120*01738. This icy fellow is currently providing the white balance alongside all the usual reds in the Fantasy Junction showroom. This car looks great from all angles and is a pretty good performer. I had a chance to go for a ride in it after some tuning work was done by a local friend. Send me an email if you want some impressions. It’s not listed with a price and it’s got a ‘sale pending’ notice. I’m guessing $125K or so based on recent SS sales from them.

Very cool in white with all the chrome and glass.  I like white on old cars.  Paint on this is very nice.  Headlights are $8 Wagner’s.

Market 38: 1959 Giulietta Sprint Project 20107

Update 2/2/13:  Bid to $18,100 with the reserve not met.  I’m torn here.  $18,100 is not a lot for a complete project car that is ready for a light skim, paint, trim/mechanical refresh and assembly -the body had to be done, but ball-parking it, you will be $10K into paint, $12K into the mechanicals and probably $20K refinishing and assembling trim/interior etc.  That’s $60K for a ’59 Normale.  I know a few guys who are deeper than that into theirs, but I don’t think I’ve seen one sell for that (have I?).

Update 1/21/13:  Looking better without those widened wheel arches, this car is back on eBay after considerable work.  Good car for someone who wants to just paint and put together a car.

Screen Shot 2013-01-21 at 8.16.35 PM

Metal work looks great!  Buyer gets to choose the palette and level of finish.  It’s a lot of work.

Market 456: Giulia Sprint 10112 353030 in the North east

Update 4/17/13:  1 bid, $25,000, sold.  I suspect this will turn out to be a well bought car.

Screen Shot 2013-04-17 at 8.35.15 PM

Update 2/2/13:  No sale at $24,101.69.  I am thinking they would probably like to get at least $30K.

Screen Shot 2013-02-02 at 11.42.44 AM

Giulia Sprint 10112 353030.  This late Sprint is on eBay out of Mass.  It looks pretty good in the pictures -well except for some mismatched looking paint on the lower edge of the doors, but I’ve talked to a previous owner and they assured me this was a sold car.  I usually say it, but here it is again -I like these late Giulia Sprints -there’s a something neat about the fact that this is an 11 year old design when it was made, and only probably continuing to be made to use up parts.

Screen Shot 2013-01-15 at 11.39.52 PM

Has all the good points I usually mention -shut lines, straight trim etc.  See what I mean about the paint on the lower door edge and on the rocker?  I am assured that it was totally solid and just had some paint lifting, probably due to poor prep.

Market 362: Spider 750D 02124 project

Update 2/2/13:  Another no sale.

Screen Shot 2013-02-02 at 11.45.18 AM

Update 1/16/13:  Someone has had a little work done.  Boy -they shoulda painted the wheels bright red while they were at it.  I still think it’s a pretty reasonable start to that early Spider 750 project you’ve been contemplating.  See it on eBay now!

Screen Shot 2013-01-16 at 10.23.49 PM

Update 12/12/12:  A little better than last time.  Maybe eBay is not the right outlet for this car?
