Market 521: SVA 750E 02159 in Germany

Giulietta Sprint Veloce 750E 1493*02159, 1315*30114, *77*101*.  This car is available now out of Germany.  Price is available on request which means it’s expensive, and the seller knows what they are selling.  This car is said to have been restored in the late 1980’s in Italy with Maurizio Tabucchi (yes, the same guy who co-authored the book I quote in almost every post) giving input on originality, and / or perhaps even owning it for some time.

It’s important to realize that this is not *just* a Veloce.  It’s a Veloce when Veloce actually meant something really really (really) special – they were made to race, not give buyers a performance option they would seldom tap.  SVA’s are generally regarded as somewhat homologous through their 600 – 610 unit production, but really the evolution that resulted in the SV Confortevole started after perhaps 200 cars being produced.  Magnesium became aluminum etc.  It would be interesting to see a scholarly work analyzing car to car changes, but at this point the cars are all largely restored to the capricious tastes of rich owners, and even in the cars youth, parts were swapped around feverishly in pursuit of Targa Florio mountain climb advantages etc.  The parts book is thorough to a fault in a general way, but with the Veloce’s it just couldn’t capture the nuance of car to car production.  Even a car like this which appears to be very original, likely hides some liberties taken for performance or expedience when it was restored.

Yes, I am saying I really like this car.

This color -typically called Francia (French) Blue, seems to be quite popular for the Sprint Veloce Alleggerita – especially the early ones for some reason.  d’Amico and Tabucchi list available colors for these as: Alfa Red, Gardenia White, Iseo Blue and Black – not sure why Francia blue is not included.  Headlight trims, grill eyebrows, bumpers and other assorted trim were in aluminum on these cars, as were the hood, doors and trunk.  Overall weight savings from these and other changes was around 110 kg.

Market 49: Splotchy 101 Sprint project in Florida

October 29 2015: This car has come back on the market after a bit of a hibernation and a healthy coat of rattle can primer.  Interesting to read my comments from 2008 and think about how the market has moved since.  It probably changed hands for just under $10,000 back then, and now it’s already at $14,200 with 31 bids and just under 3 days to go.  Amazing how things change.

sg3675

Looks like a nicer starting point today than it did 7 years ago.  Also noteworthy is that this is a 10102, not a 10105, so it, has metric gauges and was originally probably meant for Italy -though it may have been a Mexico or Venezuela bound car.  Anyone know if Mexico or Venezuela cars have Italian language gauge inserts?

October 10 2008: I’m sure at least one of you out there were wondering what the seller wants for this car.  Well wonder no longer, this car is available now on Hemmings website.  Asking price is $11,900.  Are we in a financial crisis or not?  More pictures can be seen on Picasa (unless like me your employer blocks Picasa access for some reason).  What do I think?  For $11,900 this car should run, drive, stop and not make you worry about when you last had a Tetanus shot.  Subtract the cost to make it so and you are back to a $5500 car.  It is a free country though so be prepared to see this car on the market for a while.

September 22 2008:  Reserve not met! Bidding ended at $5950 with 15 bids placed.  I bet the seller wanted $6000 and is trying to make a deal with the high bidder.  Relists always fall flat and this is pretty good money for this car.

Giulietta Sprint 10102 1493*20205, engine 1315*010311.  Here is a reportedly rust free 101 Sprint Project that is currently on eBay out of Florida.  I would want to verify the rust free claim with pictures as Florida has a climate that promotes rust.  Car wears new tires which is a plus at least as far as rolling it around while working on it is concerned and if they are of good quality your $300 ahead of the game.  Everything on the outside is still bolted in place though it’s tough to tell for sure from the pictures it all looks reasonably straight.

You can assume the ‘blush’ on the front of this car hides surface rust of the sort seen on the drivers door.  I like the fender-forward mounted mirrors (maybe a Japanese market car?) and the trim looks good.  If you are bidding, assume it will all need rechroming.

Sprint “Visaterm Securit” marked rear glass

Elmar sent me these pictures of his spare Alfa glass. Interesting to see the differences.

IMG_0619

1955?

Rueckscheibe01I bought a spare rear windscreen for my Sprint recently thinking that if I ever painted my car (I want to) I’d want to replace the orbital sanded unit it currently wears.  I got this replacement from a friend and am curious about its provenance.  It has nicely beveled edges and makers marking “Visaterm Securit” along the top edge.  It seems to be the right shape, but I haven’t ever seen a Sprint rear windscreen with this marking or beveled edges.  Anyone have one?

I should note the rest of my windows have a Securit marking, just not the rear window.

What it appears to be and all that.  Yep, thats my hood spear and yep, my paint could use some love.

Market 520: Restored 750D 03923

Giulietta Spider 750D 1495*03923, 1315*43831.  This car is available in Italy right now for 85,000 Euro.  A strong ask for a non-Veloce Spider, but it is a fairly early, very well restored, matching numbers short wheel base (SWB) car in a desirable color combo.

Email me if you are interested.

I know it’s tough to tell very much, but panel fit and paint finish look really good.  Looks like the same marker lights as I see on some SS’s.

Market 519: 1959 – 1960 Sprint or Spider engine 1315*011859 for sale

Giulietta Sprint 10102/10105 or Spider 10103/10104 engine 1315*011859.  Leo in Italy contacted me offering up this engine.  It is fairly complete, and of course should be rebuilt.  I can’t comment on 4500 Euro price – I haven’t shopped for an engine for my Sprint ever.  The closer to “matching” this is to your Sprint or Spider that needs a correct engine, the more value it should have to you.  How would you decide if it’s matching?  Check it out – a little extrapolation (or is it interpolation?)…

Sprint 10105*20825 has engine 1315*011167

Sprint 10105*21125 has engine 1315*012133

around Sprint 21000 seems close enough.

Spider 10103*08359 has engine 1315*011500

Spider 10103*08742 has engine 1315*012723.

around Spider 08500 seems close enough.

Email me if you are interested.

All the little pieces add up.  Oil pan, fan, generator, valve cover, cams etc.  Would be nice to get it all at once.

Market 518: Ex Mexico Sprint in UK 750B 07473

Giulietta Sprint 750B 1493*07473, 1315*06684.  This late second series Sprint 750B is available in the UK on eBay.  Price is about $28,000 with 32 bids as I type.  It was originally a Mexico market car, so would have been partially assembled by Willys Overland – in one of those “make work” trade deals Alfa had in a few countries.  This car looks to have a well applied coat of paint and presents pretty well, but many parts are missing, some quite tricky to locate, that the seller hopefully has – I would get a list before buying.  Not the best pictures either, unless you are the kind that can buy a car based on eight similar shots of the nose.

Front trim looks good at this distance.  Rims will need painting.  Windshield trim is missing.  Not easy to find in good shape if you need it.

Market 517: Spider 10484 up for auction in UK

Giulietta Spider 10103*10484, 00536*15683 (not original!).   H&H will be auctioning (actually probably was auctioned a few hours before I started writing) this Spider.  Estimate is 50 – 55,000 British Pounds.  Looks to be a nice example, but is not super original under the hood or, er bonnet ( I always get this Little House on the Prairie image in my head when I hear/say/type bonnet).  With a bigger engine and engine compartment painted black, this will be more along the lines of what some prospective buyers want.

This hedge corner looks made for auction sale photographs.  Rim paint looks a tiny bit blue-ish.  Very tidy car.

Market 516: Spider Veloce 05642 rough racer project

Giulietta Spider Veloce 750F 1495*05642.  Available now from BHCC and listed on eBay.  For a minute I thought it was this car, but no.  Is $19,000 as I type.  Worth probably $100,000 all correct and redone.  I looked it up in the Veloce list and sure enough, this vin started life as a Veloce.  Ad claims it’s matching numbers, but the engine looks more 101 than 750.  It’s possible, but, well, it’s a lot of work to get a 101 1300 head to work on a 750 block.

01

Vroom, it certainly looks to have been built for speed.  Headlight fillers appear to be cut down hub caps.  Bumper mount holes were brazed over.  Good color combo.

Market 323: Black Plate Sprint project 10105*21083

Update October 5 2015: Incase you spent the last 4 years wishing you had bought this car – well, you get another chance.  It’s back on eBay.  Looks to have been improved a bit, but still has a ways to go.

$_57

Paint is looking pretty good these days.  Grill is still from an early 750B or Spider.  Good luck adding a front bumper if that’s something you would care about.

Update September 5 2011: Wow, $25,800 is pretty serious for this car.  Ummm, maybe I should stop driving mine every day?  Nah.

Giulietta Sprint 10105 1493*21083.  This car is on eBay right now out of Temecula in southern California.  Car wears its original California black plate but none of the originality usually associate with a black plate car.  A lot of difficult to source trim is missing, engine is incorrect, interior is mostly wrong components with incorrect finish among other things.  It runs and drives (yay) but will require a lot to be original.  Would make a great beginning for a CSRG or other vintage racing group car.  Looks nice though.

Don’t get me wrong, it is a nice looking example.  Sprints are good cars, this example would bring a smile to your face every time you drove it.  I don’t mind the lack of badges, bumpers or hubcaps, but the trim that runs along the top of the rockers is necessary to the shape.

Market 513: 1956 Sprint 02586 in Spain

Giulietta 750B 1493*02586, 1315*02411.  Update October 3 2015: You all can thank Marco of SquadraAlfaRomeoMadeira fame for getting more pictures and info on this car. The condition of this car is just right for my taste in cars, having a light patina, but being very presentable.  Marco didn’t get a price for me.  I have to wonder how many early Sprints are surviving at this point since there are half a dozen or more on the market right now.  Are there any others on the market I missed?

October 1 2015: More of an SOS than anything.  Any of you kind readers who is fluent in Spain Spanish care to inquire about this car for me?  Maybe get the vin and engine numbers, a picture or two more?  They have a regular website but of course this car is not on it.  Thanks!

Bertone red at this point is a pretty deep and kind of old-world looking compared to Pininfarina red with its hint of orange.  Small headlights really change the character of the front.
