Market 358: Early Spider 00647, slightly modified

Update 1/4/12:  Wow, $6,412!!

Giulietta Spider 750D 1495*00647.  This odd-ball home-brew special is on eBay right now out of Sacramento.  I am going to assume this is all reversible, and only the front end changes will present any challenge not part of routine rust repair.  Title of the auction says ‘Veloce’ but 00647 is not listed as such in d’Amico & Tabucchi.  If the engine is matching numbers to the body -and I believe it is based on the fuel line configuration- this is actually  a pretty good first step toward early Spider ownership in project form.  Me?  I’d vacuum out the leaves and roll as-is to Pebble Beach -you’d turn more heads in this than an 8C 2900.  If you had this car and the Market 216 car, you’d corner a dubious market.

Roof gutter definitely recalls the VW bug.  Too bad they didn’t have access to a Sprint roof to work with -might have been more successful.  Firewall is early Spider 750D leading me to believe more strongly that the vin is correct.  Headlight openings are likely 70’s Alfa Spider sections.  Engine looks remarkably complete and original.

Market 356: Spider Veloce project 10642

Giulietta Spider Veloce 10125*10642. Alejandro made me aware that this car is available now out of Florida from a listing on the Alfa BB.  It’s a US market Spider Veloce and would have had an 00106 series engine with 40DCOE’s rather than 40DCO3’s.

I like how pictures like this force you to look differently at something since it’s orientation is unusual.  This nose looks pretty good.  One would want to touch and knock on it for bondo, but they all seem to have it.

Glas 1700 GT: One is the loneliest number…

What does every shitty Glas GT project need?  That’s right.  A parts car.  I placed notices around here and there on forums for a parts car and sure enough, one turned up.  This car is a very very late in the production run car, and very very rusty.  Money was slight -almost trivial really, and it has that ‘ran when parked’ look to it, though it’s been a while.  I spent most of my day taking it apart.  Viva la full set of rims!

Yea -or is that yikes?  The good?  It’s all there.  The bad, it’s 200 pounds lighter than a stock Glas GT due to metal loss on the underside.  The ugly?  It was a low miles nice original car before it fell into the wrong hands.

Market 355: Barn find Spider Veloce 02264

Update 12/31/11: Sold for $30,100!

Giulietta Spider Veloce 750F 1495*02264, 1315*30740. Brad pointed out that this car just popped up on eBay out of Connecticut. As far as Spider Veloce projects goes, this car just about has it all -1957 build date, matching numbers, correct intake system including 40DCO3’s, seats with tracks, moderate rust, and overall decent completeness.  It’s still a project, and as such maybe a road to ruin, but among projects, it’s not too bad.

Looks like a really good car -maybe wax it, vacuum the spiders out of the engine compartment, iron the carpets and away you go.  Hood fit is really good.

Market 354: 750 Spider Veloce 01925 in Portugal

Giulietta Spider Veloce 750F 1495*01925.  This car is available now out of Portugal.  It sports a 101 normal 1300 engine and looks okay.  Asking price is 42,000 euro’s -a bit high for what is seen in the pictures.  Looks like maybe the same seller as the vent window Sprint in Portugal.

Looks decent here -red paint is lustrous, red and uniform.  Rear view mirror looks correct -really, no big alarm bells.  I doubt that hard top is a Pininfarina original.

Glas 1700 GT: Tour de Glas

You’re reading this with a bit of interest and a bit of eye-rolling, after all this is giuliettas.com, not glasgt.com, but hey, it’s really mattsvehicularinterest.com, so humor me. I’ll inevitably talk about Sprint’s since they tend to be my frame of reference.

I was cruising the bits and bytes and found FCB Free Car Brochures.  The have a lot of good brochures scanned at VERY high resolution, including some Giulietta’s and Glas’s (awkward plural -anyone?).  I was thinking that most of you are probably like me, and have only ever seen a Glas GT at the point in the story where mine is -at the end of act one, just before act two begins or might begin, in other words, as a derelict disassembled depressing heap.  Well, this post is meant to take you back, to the beginning of act one, where the virgin is still a virgin, the dog hasn’t run away, and the crops are still growing.  From the top: Welcome to the all-new 1963 Glas 1300 GT!

This is the first picture in the 1963 brochure and represents what would have been many peoples first glimpse of the new GT based on the 1300 sedan.  Sexy car, sexy color, sexy girl not included.  Note the 1300GT doesn’t have a hood scoop.  Alfa wasn’t the only one to add a ‘decorative’ hood scoop to give their slightly larger engine a little head-room.  Like the Alfa 1600, the Glas 1700 was given a longer stroke.

Glas 1700 GT: Ate clutch slave

The hardest part of fixing up a car with very little support is the odd model-specific OEM part.   The Glas GT has just such a part in its clutch slave cylinder, an Ate item.  My car came with one -a bit of good luck if you will, but it was VERY frozen and just generally not an encouraging prospect for clutching.  Jaan was confident it would come apart and sure enough, it did.

The thing about hydraulic pressure is, it doesn’t really take no for an answer, so long as the question has enough pressure to force the recalcitrant part to answer.  In this case I cleaned it, we applied serious cutting-torch type heat, and then we hooked it up to a 2 ton bottle jack.  We let it sit at about 100 PSI over night and the next morning, a little pump on the jack saw the cylinder pop out.

Market 353: Spider Veloce project 03317 in Italy

Giulietta Spider 750F 1495*03317, 1315*30772 (missing), 1315*45283 (now).  Wow, I just spent 15 minutes looking to see if I wrote about this car before -time to organize my files!!  This car is available now from Ghibli Auto Classiche e Sportive in Italy.  Conditon is not so good, but it’s a Veloce and it’s in the land where all the spare parts seem to be headed.

Looking so-so.  Parts are present.  I want to start an ‘as found’ movement, where you get a car like this, make it work, and use it looking like this.  Would be fun and boost Tetanus shot sales.

Market 352: Gorgeous Sprint 385833 in Italy

Giulietta Sprint 1300 10102*385833.  This car is available now from Luzzago in Roncadella, Brescia.  Color combo on this one is one of my favorites, the condition is very good, and the asking price is 25,000 Euro -about $32,500 at the time of writing.  This car is one of the last few Giulietta’s made -production ending at 386000.

I see this blue on a lot of 2600 Sprints, 105 GT’s, TI’s and Supers.  I might have to paint the Glas this color.  This all looks impeccable.

Difficult to find part for sale: Giulietta Spider seat tracks

Update:  Laurence comment below is correct, Afra sells these as a set for 744.15 Euro’s before shipping.  You can subtract 21% VAT if you’re not in a VAT country -which for the US is about $765.

For sale:  Full set of Giulietta/Giulia Spider seat tracks in excellent condition.  $500 obo (free insured shipping to contiguous US at this price).  Those of you who have never looked for a set of these seat tracks are no doubt looking at my asking price skeptically, but if you have looked for a full set, including the bottoms, you are probably thinking ‘eh, that’s about right’.  If you need these and moneys tight -send me an email and convince me why you should get them for a really good deal.  I’m a sucker for a hard luck case.  I’m always up for trading too and have a long wish list!

Other than some slight surface rust they are nice.  Knobs are smooth -no splitting, springs and catches are tight.
