Market 363: Spider 750D 00033 in Sweden

Giulietta Spider 750D 1495*00033.  Henrik wrote to inform me that this car was available in Sweden for 349,000 SEK, or about $50,500 at the time of writing.  The car was sold by Jo Bonnier to Prince Bertil Bernadotte, Great Uncle to the current Swedish King.  Engine is said to be the original one, but it sports Webers now.  If you’re in the market for a very early number car, then this might be for you -doesn’t hurt that the asking price of this car is less than a lot seen recently.

Light blue is charming as always.  Door an hood fit look excellent.  All the trim fits well.  A nice car.

Glas 1700 GT: planning ahead

How do you plan for a classic car restoration project?  Do you do research, make lists -parts to buy, tasks to accomplish, money to spend, craftsmen to talk to?  Or do you dive in and start taking things apart because your money supply and knowledge are vast?  When I was working on the Giulietta SS I sold last winter, I had short term lists, but no long term list.  I didn’t have a budget to meter out money, and I didn’t have a clear path to success.  With my Glas GT project I am trying to do as much up front planning as possible.

Can’t have a post without an image right?  This is the pilot bearing assembly in the end of the crank shaft.  It is indeed a little needle bearing.  Anyone have one of these special tools I can borrow?

Glas 1700 GT: The engine

The parts car came with two engines, the one that was mounted in it, that I showed a picture of last post -all crappy on the outside, clean on the inside, and a parts engine that doesn’t look like it’s good for much.  I have decided to build the dirty on the outside/clean on the inside engine after pulling it apart and checking out the important stuff like bearings and bores.

It takes a while to get an engine apart if you are trying to document where everything goes and then it takes extra especially long if every bolt and nut has rusty threads.  Here it is after about 2 hour.  Block has lots of surface rust -nothing serious.  This trolly is really helpful.

Market 309: Stunning Celeste Spider Veloce 750F 03861

Update 1/6/12: I feel like I’m watching a rocket take off at Cape Canaveral.  This car has been listed by Colin’s Classic Cars in Milwaukee for $125,000.  It looks like some work has been done to tighten it up but it didn’t seem to need anything the last time it sold. It remains stunning and it remains one of the best I’ve had the pleasure of writing about.

Can this car have appreciated $54,900 in 7 months?  I hope we find out, and hold on to your hat if it has.

Market 361: Black Spider Veloce 750F 05144

Update 1/12/12: This car has sold.

Original post 1/5/12: Giulietta Spider Veloce 750F 1495*05144, 1315*31935.  Fantasy Junction has this car in stock right now for $79,500.  Fit and finish look pretty good, but some non-originality including color combo, intake, steering wheel and transmission, may put off some buyers.  The caretakers of this car mentioned in the ad are well known for quality work, so it should drive well.  California black plates are a nice addition as always.

I’ve looked down this sidewalk a few times.  Looks good up here.  Hood fit is slightly biased toward the left side.  You don’t see amber markers on 750’s very often.

Spider and Spider Veloce 2011 market review

As usual there were more Spider/Spider Veloce’s on the market than any other Giulietta. If you go down the list you will see a lot of red -but the two verified high dollar cars were non-red, black and celeste rather.  $70,100 for the very nice celeste 750D is serious money considering the years high sale was the black Veloce at $90,000.  Next year I expect to see one or two nice cars over $100,000 -probably a restored, non-red 750F if it happens.  On the project front, the flow of freshly unearthed cars hasn’t slowed, and I don’t expect it to, since these cars, even in serious disrepair, are obviously special.

Market 358 was Spider 750D 000647, a modified project that is on eBay at $2550 as I write.

Market 350 was a Giulia Spider 1600 on Craigslist for $3000.  Might have been a good deal!

Sprint and Sprint Veloce 2011 market review

2011 saw more SS’s on the market than Sprint/Sprint Veloce’s -at least as far as my tracking went, and I didn’t really try to find SS’s more than Sprints.  Seems odd, since there were 10X more Sprint’s made.  If you look at the list below you will see very few first series 750B’s, no lightweights and only a couple non-lightweight Veloce’s changed hands -the bulk of the sales were 101 normale’s like mine.  Of those a few made really decent money.

Market 287 was a Sprint in a sorry state out of Poland for $1000.

Market 325 was a 101 Sprint selling as a pair with a stepnose GTV, sold together for $3748 -I’ll give the Sprint the benefit of the doubt and say it sold for $2000.

Sprint Speciale 2011 market review

2011 was a good year for SS’s, I tracked 24 sales, with the average price seeming to have climbed a bit since last year, and even scary projects starting above $15,000.  Lownose 00061 at over $200K is a highlight, but I think Market 294 might have been the highlight of the year, despite the 105/115 Spider nose grafted on.

Market 332 was this Giulia SS in Italy.  I think the asking price was 20,000 euro’s.  Probabaly worth about $15,000 as a parts car.

Market 297 was SS 00358, available in Europe for $18,800.

Market 360: SS 381261 in Burlingame

1/4/12: I have it from several sources that this car has been sold.

Giulia SS 10121*381261.  Kip sent me an email to let me know this SS is available now from Cammisa motors in Burlingame for $89,000.  Car was a German market car, not sure if it had any final assembly done there like the earlier Giulietta’s that NSU did final prep on.  Color Combo is excellent.  Seems to be priced fairly considering some of the project prices seen this year.

That’s a handsome creature!  Good color, good panel fit, great trim fit and clean.  Anyone have $90K I can borrow?

Happy Holidays from giuliettas.com

It’s Christmas morning and I’m sitting in my easy chair with my slippers on, sipping tea and listening to PFM -some early 70’s Italian Prog rock.  Winter solstice, what I tend to think of as the start of the new year, was 3 days ago, so days should start getting noticeably longer in a few weeks and warm evenings working on projects and Spring motoring are just around the corner.  I am reminded that this time next year will be a lot less relaxing but very likely more fun since there will be a 10 month old boy hanging around.  I look forward to it.

I always buy my cars presents and this year the Sprint got a new set of Centerline 8mm green spark plug wires.  They sell 5mm wires, but I wore a set out in 3 years, so maybe the 8mm’s will last longer.  The Glas 1700 GT and I are still getting to know each other, but I took a chance and ordered a set of Deves piston rings in standard size (yep, they have them) and Flexible hydraulic lines out of Argentina.

I hope you all get a chance to sit in your easy chair, sip an appropriate to the time of day beverage and reflect on how good life is.  Happy Holidays (or whatever you call it)!
