Update 8/31/10… morning: Craigslist ad is working again.
Update 8/30/10… evening: Craigslist posting has been deleted. Sold? Headed for eBay? Tree fell on it? Chances are it’ll turn up before long.
Giulietta Sprint 10102*158831. This car is listed on Craigslist out of St.Charles, IL for the asking price of $29,000. The seller claims the 1600 engine is original but this car should have a 00102 series 1300 (around # 00102*24900) unless it was made for some market d’Amico & Tabucchi don’t know about. Looks like a really nice car!
It’s hard to tell much from this picture. Door and hood shut lines look good, sill trim is missing and wipers are sitting pretty high on the windshield glass. Looks to have a Ferrari sticker above the badge on the fender. Continue reading “Market 256: '61 Sprint **Potential Show Car**”
Market 244: Early Spider at Gooding auction
Update 8/26/10: So, word is this car sold somewhere in the mid-$70K’s to a rich guy from Mexico. Rumor? I’ll try and find out.
Giulietta Spider 750D 1495*00724, 1315*40670. Gooding and Co. will be auctioning this 1956 Spider off at their Pebble Beach auction held August 14th and 15th. There is no reserve and the selling price is expected to be $70,000 – $90,000. Big money, but as the auction text states, this car is ‘striking’, ‘eligible’, ‘iconic’ and ‘superb’ -the full thesaurus treatment. I occurs to me that if this car makes money in the stated range it will be the most expensive production 750D recorded.
Paint looks amazing as do the shut-lines and trim. Stance is about perfect. Someone spent some money.

Market 217: restored Spider 10103*09331
Update 5/18/10: Car as predicted ssold in the high twenties: $28,600 after 16 bids to be exact. See, a well presented, no BS auction can result in a decent selling price.
Giulietta Spider 10103 1495*09331. This car is on eBay right now out of Washington state. The seller claims to have done extensive work in the early 2000’s and this is verified by what is seen in the pictures. After less than a day the bidding has reached $10,127 with 4 bids. There has been a pretty good group of Spiders the last month, jockeying for a ‘summer fun’ sale, but I think this might be one of the best of the group.
This is how they probably looked new. No excuses chrome, good panel fit and just a sort of ‘wow’ factor.
Market #29: Nice Red Giulia Sprint Speciale in Los Angeles
Update 4/26/10: This car is back on eBay with the same pictures and a zero feedback seller. Scam? Chances are…Â
Update 7/2/08. Auction has been pulled off eBay as of about 1pm. I guess I was right to express my doubts about the validity of this auction. Buyers beware, this is the third time I have personally seen pictures from this group used to create a fake eBay auction. Has anyone ever fallen for one of these scams?
Giulia Sprint Speciale 10121*380999. This car is available right now on eBay out of Los Angeles with a starting bid of $45,200. This particular car, with these pictures has been on eBay twice in the last year, once in Hayward California and once in Savannah Georgia. On both of those occasions the auction was pulled within a day of being posted. Is this the real seller offering this car for sale right now? I don’t know, but more pictures and information is provided in this auction than either of the other two and both the others had buy it now prices that were way under market for this car, I think less than $20,000. There is no reserve and the starting bid is slightly under market for this car if everything checks out. Maybe this is a real no-scam auction.
No engine number is given so I would first ask about the number and request a picture of the number on the engine to make sure the stamping looks unaltered. In this price range, you have to verify everything. I would guess the engine number would turn out to be in the range 00121*00850 – 00121*01150.
Is it just me or is the bumper corner on the drivers side drooping a little? The supports and bracketry in this area are not very robust and as such easily damaged but also easily realigned. Other than that it looks great!

Market 210: Amazing transformation 1960 Sprint
Update 4/22/10: $23,100 was the result with 21 bidders making a play. Lets hope this car has finally found a home!Â
Giulietta Sprint 10105 1493*22515. This car is on eBay right now out of Philadelphia PA. Why the ‘amazing transformation’ title? We’ve seen this car before. This car has the distinction of being the first car in the line up (in other words the cheapest) of both the 2008 and 2009 Sprint market summaries. Check out Market 40 and Market 75. I have often said, half in jest, that you could buy a somewhat complete Sprint shell and a $700 1970’s Spider runner, throw on a decent coat of paint, buy about $1500 worth of little stuff from Centerline or on eBay and create a pretty cool runner. That looks like exactly what happened here. Bravo!
Paint looks good, front end trim is good and all in all it looks attractive and right. I would have no problem driving this Sprint. Picasso museum?

Market 209: Nice red Giulietta Spider
Update 4/26/10: 32 bids were placed and $27,201 was the highest. Middle of the road for one of these in this condition. I think inclusion of the original engine would have helped a little but this is about what they are going for…
Giulietta Spider 750D 1495*07104. This car is listed on eBay out of Troy Michigan, no doubt hoping to ride the coat tails of Market 206’s $45,400 result for a nice red Giulietta Spider normale. This car looks good in the pictures but they are of somewhat low resolution and without the sellers name recognition of the 206 Spider, it is unlikely to be bid up quite as high.  I am pleased to finally be able to incorporate something in the spirit of my ‘Pushing Product’ series here.
This is called ‘selling the dream’. The red convertible, the hot chick, and a seemingly warm summer day. Not sure what the train signifies, but I’m sure I’ll think of something. Car sits just right and the panel gaps look good. Of course the first question in the Q&A section of the auction was regarding the possible inclusion of the girl -maybe in another arguably less civilized country…
Market 170: Nicely restored silver Giulia SS
Update 2/13/10: I had the nephew of the seller contact me with some links to videos and more pictures. Â Car is still available. Â Enjoy.

The start up -nice induction bark.

Too bad they couldn’t get out on a track and really go for it.
Looking good -very good. Â More pictures here.

Spider Veloce 10107 167952, a restoration
There are restorations and there are restorations. At one end of the spectrum we find cars where efforts are minimal, as cheaply done as possible and focused on creating the illusion of a nice car -usually attended to with the aim of resale on the internet.  At the other end of the spectrum are cars whose owners take on the restoration as a personal challenge and lovingly consider every part, sparing no expense in the pursuit of perfection. George Kraus’s efforts on Giulietta Spider Veloce 10107*167952 are definitely among the latter.
Very nice indeed! Giulietta Spiders look great in black with red interior. Note the European specification side markers, same design as a Sprint Speciale and later boat tail spiders.

Market 177: 1600 Spider “precisely restored to correct factory standards”
Update 1/24/10 (2010/01/24 for you non-US based date readers): This car sold for $75,000 plus 10% buyers premium. Â This is very strong money -above and beyond what anyone I have run into estimated. Â Reminds me of the Triumph TR4 that sold at auction a few years ago for $100K. Â As I mentioned below, there are people for whom this kind of money is lunch money, and they only want perfect cars. Â I wonder if it would have even made a difference if it was a 1600 Veloce. Â Maybe a little is my guess.
Giulia Spider 1600 10123*379814, 00112*12842. This Spider will be auctioned off by Gooding Company at their Scottdale Az. Auction happening Jan. 22nd and 23rd. Description is rich with details and as I read it I imagine Allen De Cadenet reading it to me while powering around a circuit in it with is hair blowing around and the exhaust note just loud enough that he has to raise his voice. Let’s have a look at this “precisely restored to correct factory standards” car.
So far so good, looking amazing in professionally photographed ripose. Door and hood fit very well, trim is all symmetrical, shiny and to a matched standard with the red paint. I never saw one at the dealer, but I’m willing to bet this is better than new. Market 181: Early Spider Veloce
Update 1/23/10: Car has apparently sold, after 3 days on the market. Â Who’s the lucky new owner?
Giulietta Spider Veloce 750F 1495*01942, 1315*30541. This car is at Fantasy Junction right now and I can tell you now, it wont last. Â Why do I say that? Â Well, it’s a 1957, a year they didn’t make many Spider Veloce’s, it’s restored to a very high standard by people who have good reputations and it’s only $8500 more than the two 1958 Spider Veloce’s that sold last year for $50K needing some sorting and tidying.
These cars look great in light blue. Â I can find no fault in this picture -everything fits together well. Continue reading “Market 181: Early Spider Veloce”
