750 and 101 series cars 1954 – 1965
Giulietta Sprint 1493*21163. This car is available now on eBay and BringaTrailer out of Northern California. It has been modified to perform at an amazing level for track and event use, but retains it’s trim and charm. $35,000 is the price of entry.
I like the Panasports, I like the blacked out grills, the fit and finish are to a high standard. These Vitaloni mirrors are out of place but fill the holes and do the job nicely.

Update: I received the numbers from the seller, this is Chassis 1493E07137, Engine 1315*31504. This would indicate this car is not a Confortevole, but a modified 101 bodied Sprint Veloce.
Giulietta Sprint Veloce Confortevole. This Giulietta Sprint is available right now on Italian eBay with an opening bid of 30,000 Euro’s or $37,846 at the time of writing… is the dollar approaching parity with the Euro? This car is pretty nice so obviously there is a reserve involved.

Body work is gorgeous on this car and the Celeste blue suits it perfectly. Note the laterals in the grill openings have the thin trim strips, an option on ‘regular’ Sprints but standard on the Veloce Confortevole.
Giulietta Sprint Veloce Zagato 1493E*06936. This car is listed on Anamera right now out of the Netherlands. There is very little information given on this car but if you read through ‘The Complete SVZ File’ thread on the Alfa BB you will find some very interesting reading about this car.
This is a gorgeous little car. Zagato hand crafted these cars on an individual basis from Sprint race car wrecks. This car was restored by Zagato in the mid 1980’s.Â
Giulietta Sprint Zagato 10126*00107, engine 00120*01108. This car is available right now from Morris and Welford. Price is POR and the car is restored so I assume it costs between $250,000 and $350,000. I am no expert so I will keep commentary to a minimum.
This is a neat car. The yellow reminds me of a Ferrari 275 GTB4 a friend used to have . I would lose a few of the stickers but other than that keep it how it is.

The Alfa featured here was a regular at the Lime Rock race track in Connecticut where its previous owner of 25 years raced it, including many VSCCA vintage events. The roll bar should still meet SCCA regulations. The engine has a 750cc Veloce bottom end and a 101-1300 head, intake, and dual Weber carbs. Gear changes are made by a lightened GTA close-ratio gearbox and the limited slip rear end has a 5:12 gear ratio. The no restriction exhaust makes the wonderful music you expect to hear from an Alfa race car. We bought this car with the intent of restoring it as a second vintage race car sister to our vintage racing Duetto but after a year of sitting we realize it is time to let it go. It runs great, the clutch, transmission and brakes are all good. As you can see from the photos, the nose has been pushed in a bit but nothing serious or structural. We do have the grills and other exterior trim to return this to a stock, street driven car but our wish was to return it to a streetable vintage race car. We had intended on painting the car black and retaining the stock red interior. This is such a fun car, if you have never experienced a vintage Alfa that has been built for racing it is very hard to put into words the absolute joy to be had. Though great mechanically, we would love to be a part of returning it to its former visual glory and will offer the new owner a very attractive price for a cosmetic restoration of this little gem.  Giulietta Sprint Veloce 750E 1493*06930. This car is available right now from Brighton Motor Sports for $28,000. This car is humorously described as having a “900cc block with a 1250cc head”, pictures of the engine compartment look like a 1600 is installed.
I recently sold SV 06917 to Corey in Seattle and SV 06924 was sold last year by FJ, both those cars are the same Amber White but with with blue/gray interior. This car probably shared the paint booth with those cars and they almost certainly went tip-to-tail through the assembly line together. This car is not in as good shape as 6917, and certainly doesn’t have the monster 1750 that it has, but the asking money is the same.
Ouch! My red Sprint experienced this sort of thing when its brakes went out. Was $1800 to fix it up back to presentable. Stripes almost look like 3M masking tape.
Giulia Sprint Speciale 10121*380473. This car is available right now from Fantasy Junction (I should mention they revamped their website and it looks great, with a new high res photograph appearing with each return to their home page and larger format write-ups). Asking price is $45,000, much more realistic than the $55,000 they were trying to get for this car last year.
This car has been seen around California racetracks for several years. Hans used to drive to the track, race, then drive home, in many cases several hours each way. I saw this car race maybe three years ago and, like Jerry, he didn’t take the chequered flag, and he didn’t come in last. It has the original, though rebuilt engine and went pretty well. It is no match for Alfa’s prepared to current racing spec, but that’s not really the point of this car. I’d be more than happy with it just as it is.
This is the second car in two posts with mis-matched mirrors, maybe I need to emulate rather then complain. I think this car looks tough and purposeful in this picture with the numbers and spot/fog light.

Giulietta Sprint Veloce ‘Allegerita’ 750E1493*04347, engine 1315*30526, Bertone 77468. This car is available right now for 68,000 Euro’s ($85,000 on November 19, 2008) from various sources in Europe but I found it at Steuel. The advertisement text is available below and includes pieces of the cars history the new owner will no doubt have fun verifying and elaborating on. I contacted the owner directly about the car and he provided me with the numbers and an offer of further information should I require it. I have no doubt any information required to help a potential buyer will be provided without hesitation.
In contrast to yesterdays SVA this car has been thoroughly refinished and prepared inside and out for racing without for cutting any corners and with no piece untouched. As can be seen below, the engine compartment underside and suspension are all in top condition. The Conrero connection and Targa Florio history should add quite a bit to the price of this car, but other than maybe a picture I doubt much evidence of those days still exists in the car.
This car looks like a new car and I suppose one could say to all intents that it is a new car. Wheels appear to be current reproductions. Without being specific I’ll just say this car looks right- everything fits together well and has a unified level of detailing.

Giulietta Sprint Speciale 10120*00687, engine 00129*29819 (not original). This car is going to be auctioned 11/15/08 at the Luzzago in Italy. The engine is from a Giulietta TI which seems funny, but once the original is gone, almost any 101 1300 can serve as a basis to build an 00120 spec veloce engine, you just have to verify what was done. I really like the look of the car, lowered and with all extra trim removed. I’m not crazy about the white wheels and some of the interior treatments, but that’s all easy enough to deal with.
Paint looks great, note there is little reflection distortion across body lines. Home-made grill is simple but effective.

Our friends over at bring a trailer have this car on offer from a collection in Southern California. If it’s a 1964 it’s probably a Giulia 1600 Sprint. The car is reported to have been a French market car which means it probably had a few oddities like a glass brake fluid bottle when it was new. Alfa and Renault had a deal worked out that reduced the import tax on Alfa’s and allowed Alfa to make Dauphines and R4’s in Italy.  I’ll explore this relationship in a later post.Â
This car looks like a pretty straight, lightly modified, used but not abused car that would clean up nicely and make a great driver. Asking price is $30,000 which seems optimistic, but a trip to Orange County may find this car to be better than it appears and it probably has excellent provenance from its time on the track.
The absence of the egg-crate grills on this car makes it look tough. I’d put some Cibie Oscars on either side of the grill heart. All the visible trim and shut lines look good. I like the orangy-red and would look forward to cleaning and polishing this car if I bought it.
Update 2/11/09: This car just showed up on Anamera advertising that it will be auctioned by RM. They are looking for $125,000.
How much mark up does a detailing add? Someone is going to find out!

Ex-Al Leake 1957 Giulietta Spider ‘Monoposto’ 1495*02646, Engine 00106*00512. This is a pretty serious purpose-built race car and it is available right now from Fantasy Junction. Click on the link if for no other reason than to look at the 50 or so pictures provided. No price is stated but Sophia, his most often raced Giulietta Spider made about $75,000 on eBay last winter so you can bet that this car will be at least that much.
Al Leake along with some other guys including H.B. Luginbuhl had an SCCA race team that started in the late 60’s/early 70’s called Rubber Chicken racing. Al continued to race and build Alfa’s for many years until he lost a battle with cancer earlier this year. A little of his history and cars can be read here on the Alfa BB. I saw Al race a few times at Sears Point and Laguna Seca and I can personally attest that he was very very fast and that this car is capable of winning against seemingly faster and more nimble cars if well driven.
It’s refreshing to see a modern era vintage race car that is both fiercely competitive and tastefully presented. I like the contrasting white wheels and cut down windscreen. A lot of Giulietta Spider race cars lose the under door trims, eyebrow trims and even grill heart. If you are fast this eight pounds of jewelry isn’t going to keep you from winning.
