Market 419: 1750 powered 101 Sprint 23176 at Coys

Update 5/19/12: Some of you may have noticed this car didn’t go through the auction.  The seller contacted me to let me know he pulled it due to what he described as a lack of enthusiasm for the car and a desire to not give it away.  It is available for 43,000 Euro’s (about $55,000) out of Munich Germany.  Check out the pictures linked to by the vin number below.  It’s a great looking car.  If you’d like to contact the owner drop me a line at sprints @ giuliettas.com

Giulietta Sprint 10102 1493*23176. This car is being auctioned by Coys on May 12th in Monaco.  Car looks amazing and, though not entirely original, is tastefully done.  I like the body color, it looks pretty close to what I think of when I say Bluette, and the interior color also, though not an original option, suits the body color.  I’m not a fan of the body color on the wheels -adds a cartoonish aspect to it, but repainting wheels is among the easiest tasks.  I like that they tout the condition of the trunk yet fail to provide a picture.  Maybe they need a continuity editor…

Shut lines are great, trim looks wonderful and the car has a capable poise -no doubt matched by the 1750!  I’m trying to like those wheels -honest!  Is that rear view mirror positioned correctly?  I always thought the wide part went to the outside.

La V Coppa Sant Ambroeus

Maurizo sends me a note: “I put this interesting video on YouTube.”  That’s an understatement -this is like the first time I saw the Shell Coup Des Alps video -except a little more lingering on the cars here.  Wow.  How many stills from this film or photographs have I seen from this day 54-ish years ago!

Engauged at the moment

Sometimes it’s a box of chocolates you get that forces you to take little nibbles out of them to see what’s what, or a line-up of a dozen or more of the same model of something spanning a few years to see that what you thought was the same is subtly different.  I’m sure you remember the day you saw an early 750 ‘eyebrow’ Sprint beside a later 101 ‘eggcrate’ Sprint and the heavens opened in that a-ha moment -they are the same car but utterly different.  Well, I happen to have a nonet of Giulietta gauges on my dining table staring me down and just such a thing is happening.  What I regarded as vaguely homogenous has demonstrated itself to be quite heterogeneous -especially in their elderly state.

In all their glory and with a sprinkling of other fun stuff -the gauges!  Let’s see, I have two Veloce 140 MPH speedometers, 2 2000 – 8000 Veloce Tachometers, one English, one Italian, two tri-gauges, a normal speedometer, a normal tachometer and an empty tach case.  Why?  Because I can.

Market 418: SZ 00051 at RM in Monaco

Update 5/16/12: This car sold for 257,600 Euro’s or about $340,000.  I would be tempted to call this a bargain.  With supplies this limited, and nearly the usability of a modern car, these can’t help but get more expensive.

Giulietta Sprint Zagato 10126*00051, 00120*00175.  This SZ is going to be auctioned by RM on May 12th along side some other interesting Giulietta’s.  Auction estimate is €240,000 – €280,000, ‘only’ about 3 times what a top SS goes for at auction, where SZ’s used to be 10 – 12 times more expensive.  If you don’t believe SS values are in a bubble, then you should consider SZ’s a bargain, since they only made about 200 of them.  I don’t know SZ’s like I do Sprints, but this car looks good to me.

Does indeed look amazing.  It’s important to remember that while a lot of the mechanical parts are in common with some other Giulietta’s, the coachwork has to be restored or hand-made replaced and most of these cars saw a decade of hard use before becoming desirable collectors items.  Note the jack point covers in aluminum.  Nice touch.

Market 314: Giulietta SS Lownose 10120 00061 in aluminum

Update 5/15/12:  On the hammer this car sold for $195,804!  The low end of the estimate, but, it’s easy to spend other peoples money… I’d have sweated every dime. Not a bad purchase price for a nearly unique car.  Someday I’ll be in the running for cars like this -off to get a lotto ticket!

Update 4/21/12: Big money car needs a big money venue -so without further fooling around, this car is now being run through an RM auction in Monaco this May. Expected sale price $185,000 – $235,000. Not bad for what may well be one of the ‘best of breed’ SS’s. I sure want it!  Stuart- thank you for alerting me to this auction.

Could be you!  I like the gold tinted wheels.  Stellar.

Market 338: Neglected Spider 1600

Update 5/6/12:  I don’t remember if it failed to get any bids, or was ended early, but this car is back on eBay after a brief hiatus.  Seller seems to have done some research and knows what they are selling this time around.  Car looks a lot better now and the opening bid has gone from $500 to $6499.  Such a deal.

Much better no?  Check out the difference in descriptions, both are posted below.

Market 417: Nice 1600 Spider 374485

Update 7/1/12:  $29,200 is good money for one of these late cars.

Giulia Spider 1600 10123*374485. This car is on eBay right now out of Scottsdale Az.  Condition is very good, not quite fancy auction fodder, but headed in that direction.  Short comings include the black engine compartment and trunk floor as well as some non originality in the interior such as mirror and shift knob.  It’s a good car that gets such minor criticisms.

Sometimes I feel like I’ve seen this scene so much it’s like dejavu.  Trim and paint looks great, shut lines are excellent and he lawn is sinfully green for a desert yard.

New to the fleet: Toyota Stout!

The other night I was examining the fabric of my life and found that, while it seemed on the surface I was spread thin, there was actually an area that could be worked to give a little more bandwidth if you will.  This examination followed closely on the realizations that I needed to not be dicing with modern traffic daily in my Sprint, that hauling greasy Alfa and Glas lumps around in the back of my wife’s 6 month old Jetta was almost as dicey as a panic stop behind a new German car with ABS while in the Sprint, especially should some gear oil find it’s way into the carcinogenic ‘new car smell’ emitting carpets, and, most subtle of all, there was this old itch that could use a little scratching- you see, back when I was doing 20 unit semesters of engineering course work there was this particularly weird/cool white Toyota pick-up I used to spot on my route to school.

I bought a 1966 Toyota Stout!  It’s cousin Norm’s fault.  (Australian readers are nodding knowingly -these are tough neat trucks).

The good: it’s got a rebuilt engine with very close to zero miles that runs good; there is not much rust -just the similar-to-an-Alfa rust that happens when dirt is trapped behind the front wheels; the interior is pretty good; to Stout owners chagrin the world over -a perfect windshield (there was one offered on eBay recently for $2000!!!!!!).  The bad: the horrible 80’s wheels, the rattle can primer coating, the seat covering, the dark tinted windows and the impossibly funky carb throttle linkages.

Market 409: Spider 750D 03629 -Clean

Update 7/1/12: This car did pretty well, selling for $37,500 -a mere $1000 less than their initial asking.

Update 4/23/12: This car has been listed on eBay. I suppose I should buy it so I have two red Giulietta’s with black paint below the rocker trim. Anyone care to guess what price the auction will end at?  Looks like Marina green in San Francisco -but Laurence will know for sure.

Picture above is a little more pro.  Looks very nice.

Original post 3/29/12: Giulietta Spider 750D 1495*03629, 1315*43387.  This car is offered by CarPlanet out of the San Francisco bay area for $38,500.  Car is in well loved and nicely taken care of condition with some low priority little improvements that can be done when the new owner chooses.  Overall finish is average, but a complete, dry, runner seems to be worth more than the sum of its parts.

Looks like a nice example.  Everything fits well and has an alluring sheen.  Black painted rockers can be a clue that rust repairs have been done, so check carefully if that scares you -I’m not saying it has rust, just pointing out what I think when I see black painted rockers.

1493.80.711 Sprint and Sprint Veloce Light, rear number plate (Carello)

This is the first post in a new series I’ve been working on, that will coincide with a car I’m working on and some other endeavors.  Project cars are called basket cases because many times you get baskets full of mystery parts.  The car I’m working on is no different except that occasionally an unmarked sandwich bag holds all the bits to a particular assembly, as was the case with this one, the famous ‘airplane’ rear plate light housing and trim flourish.  This assembly is pretty straight forward, a plated casting with some mounting studs (at least one of which is usually broken off), a light socket assembly with a mount, a lens and some screws.  This assembly is tricky, because all those parts are specific to it -except possibly the screws.

Not the best picture, but good enough -it’s hard to show those little screws and the big casting in the same picture.  That little Alfa emblem is and has been unavailable for years.  This one is pretty good, with only some light crazing.  Not sure if the triangular Carello lens is available.  Maybe Alfastop?
