TI Tidy part 9: Two Liter refresh complete

This weekend I managed to squeeze about 6 hours of work in to my busy social schedule and prepped the 2 liter for its new home in the TI.  The plan was to replace front and rear main seals, do the head gasket and just generally inspect and clean everything up.  Andrew helped me check the compression on the engine and it was all over the place.  # 1 had 160, #4 had 80.  With oil added it was about 160 across the board.  I consulted some local experts and it was decided to carry on with the freshen up, that the compression should come back up once its run and the valve seats and rings reseat.  I’m crossing my fingers!

2 liter doneStarting at the end as usual.  The mighty 2 liter ready for installation in the car after new front and rear main seals, new head gasket, 1300/1600 style water pump installed, cam timing set and ignition close.   I still need to attach the transmission, replace some intake side head studs, install the starter and a few other things.  Also still looking for a set of side draft carbs.

2 liter water pump offThe strip down continues.   Waterpump mounting face is in good shape.  Spica pump belt flange needs to be removed if I will use a 1300/1600 waterpump without the crossover flow fitting since the lower radiator hose exit from the pump is at a different angle on the 1300/1600 pump and it wont fit over the belt flange.

2 liter spica front coverHere’s the flange to remove.  I removed the stud first since I didn’t know how deep it went.  The flange has to be cut back pretty far to allow the hose to be fit.

2 liter modified front coverIt looks like I just knocked it off with a hammer, but a cut into it some with a hacksaw and then dremel so it would break along a desireable line.  I had to test fit the pump and then modify the line a few times to give hose clearance.  One of the water pump mounting studs was too long so I pulled one from the front cover of the SS engine.  I think they call that robbing Peter to pay Paul.

2 liter front mainThis is where the front seal lives.  If you don’t chamfer the sharp leading edge of the ID of the hole the OD if the seal can get damaged when you are trying to install it.  Everyone I asked said to put a light smear of gray permatex on the OD of the seal before installation.  I used a big socket to tap the seal home.

2 liter front pulleyThe sealing face of the pulley is in very good condition so I am confident I will get a good oil-tight fit.  That toothed section is for the Spica belt and will go unused.

2 liter rear mainHere’s the rear main prepped and ready for the seal.  I had to make a gasket for the oil galley cover.  The factory threadlocker was abundant and had to be removed from the flywheel mount bolt holes.  I put a glob of grease in the center bushing and used red locktite on the flywheel bolts when I assembled all of this.

2 liter head gasket done clutch onAnd here is the rear with everything buttoned up, but before the head gasket was done.

Up next assembling the rest of the engine components and prepping the car to revceive the  engine.  I am still on track for my budget and schedule.
