Sprint Speciale 2011 market review

2011 was a good year for SS’s, I tracked 24 sales, with the average price seeming to have climbed a bit since last year, and even scary projects starting above $15,000.  Lownose 00061 at over $200K is a highlight, but I think Market 294 might have been the highlight of the year, despite the 105/115 Spider nose grafted on.

Market 332 was this Giulia SS in Italy.  I think the asking price was 20,000 euro’s.  Probabaly worth about $15,000 as a parts car.

Market 297 was SS 00358, available in Europe for $18,800.

Market 360: SS 381261 in Burlingame

1/4/12: I have it from several sources that this car has been sold.

Giulia SS 10121*381261.  Kip sent me an email to let me know this SS is available now from Cammisa motors in Burlingame for $89,000.  Car was a German market car, not sure if it had any final assembly done there like the earlier Giulietta’s that NSU did final prep on.  Color Combo is excellent.  Seems to be priced fairly considering some of the project prices seen this year.

That’s a handsome creature!  Good color, good panel fit, great trim fit and clean.  Anyone have $90K I can borrow?

Modified Sprint Speciale's 3: another Zat car??

Elmar sent me this picture yesterday, describing it as ‘pimped’.  It reminded me that I’ve been owing the ‘Modified SS’s’ post series an update for a while.  This one is dedicated to the modern era super sports type  mod’s that probably started with the Zat SS (381238 was the basis) that eventually sold through RM in 2008 for just under $50K.  I can’t verify the auction description below -but it states that 4 Zat SS’s were made and two survive.
This car has been to the ‘Shelby Cobra 427′ school of design: very wide wheels, chunky bulbous corners and a big ol’ hood scoop.  Would be funny if it was stock Alfa powered.  I suspect it is an SS body on a tube frame. Continue reading “Modified Sprint Speciale's 3: another Zat car??”

Market 332: Rough Giulia SS in Italy

This car is available right now on Italian eBay.  It appears to be very complete and very rusty.  I think pictures of this car were on the AlfaBB a few months ago.  One of the Italian readers care to call the seller and find out which car this is?  As a restoration object it’s going to be a challenge.  As a parts car it will be very helpful and yield a lot of extras that can be sold off.  Check it out.
It’s a shame.  This was probably a nice car that suffered a minor fault, was parked and let to rot.  Someone will take this project on and spend a mint -at least it’s worth big $ when done.

Market 324: Rough SS project 177353

Update October 1 2015: Now in Germany.  Anamera doesn’t show when an ad was made active – this one just says “as of 9/12/2011.”
Update September 12 2011: Beverly Hills Car Club is the lucky dealer who gets to add the dealer tax/toll between the end buyer and first seller of this car.  I guess it’s sort of like interest on money loaned.  Anyway, they scrubbed it up, added $7000 to the price and have it listed.

Taking turd polish to new heights!  Original bosphoro blue is a great color -if it had its original engine it would be an even better car to restore.  Lot’s of work to do but someone will do it.  Judging by the tires this thing has been off the road a LONG time.  Lots more pictures here.
Update September 3 2011: Sold for the Buy it Now price to the man in the big yellow hat!
Giulia Sprint Speciale 10120*177353.  Been a while since we had a rough SS on the site, but this car on eBay right now makes up for the lack.  Needs a lot and when you get it apart it will need a lot more.  Price of $19,500 BIN is not too bad really.  Lets see, 177061 has failed to bring more than $85,000 on eBay despite being a really nice example, take $19,500 from that leaves $65,500.  $20,000 in bodywork, $10,000 in paint, $10,000 drive train rebuild (and still not correct)… you get the idea.  If you want one and are handy with tools though, who knows.
It’s an SS, it has some glass, it’s on 4 wheels, it doesn’t have any huge dents.  So far so good.

Market 321: SS 177468 at Barons

Update 8/28/11:  The auction for this car will be on September 19th at Sandown Park Race course -you have to preregister but can call in a bid.  I also got a bunch of high resolution pictures that show this to be a very very nice example.
Very nice luster to the paint, detailing in the new pictures is very clean.  No excuses amazing.
Interior looks amazing -be sure to check out the other pictures linked above -lots of good detail shots.  Red with gray is a very attractive combo.
Giulietta Sprint Speciale 10121*177468.  This car is to be (or was -not sure) auctioned by Barons.  Car is a late Giulietta probably with 3 shoe brakes up front.  Auction estimate is 40 – 44000 pounds -in the neighborhood of $70,000.
Looking good!  Door gaps are nearly invisible.  Wheels are Borrani type.  Very red.

Market 299: Giulia Sprint Speciale racer

Update 7/26/11:The seller of this car contacted me, the vin is 10121*380352.  Anyone know any information on previous owners etc?  Check out this cool YouTube of it in action!

From 3/24/11: Giulia SS. This car is available now from Classic Car dot com.  It is described as a 1964 Giulia but no vin is stated.  Anyone know which car this is?  Asking price is 60,000 Euro’s (about $85,000 on 3/24/11).  Description states the seller converted it to race spec -I wonder if it comes with the stock components that were removed?
Learn more about the Sprint Speciale here. The Giulia SS register is here.
I like this color a lot.  Fog light placement is interesting -I was going to put fog lights on mine, but use the bumper bracket mounts.  Wheels are period magnesium items.

Rare part: Sprint Speciale drivers door glass

Update 5/24/11:  Huh.  Sold for $225.  There was a time when 3 guys I know would have bid on a lot on this.
Elmar pointed out to me that there is an SS drivers door glass on eBay right now.  While I had my SS project a lot of guys asked about this part. It took me about 2 years to find one as well.   There are two versions of the window to accommodate different mounting styles, but the differences are all inside the door, so a clever restorer should be able to make either work on either mechanism.  Ends tonight!

Market 301: Giulia SS project 381313

Update 5/9/11: After an Atlantic crossing this feller has been put back up for sale.  This time in the UK.  Check it out.  Make an offer.  Description is a little odd -saying the restoration process was started 6 – 7 months ago…

“The car needs to be restored.I start the restoration process 6-7 months ago,but I don’t have the money to finish it.The body is in excellent shape. The engine starts and runs perfect ( no mechanical problems ).Matching numbers. Excellent car to restore.”

Update 4/13/11: 18 bids, $32,750.  Not bad!

Originally posted 4/5/11: Giulia Sprint Speciale 10121*381313, 00121*01302. This car is on eBay right now from Gullwing in New York after spending a few weeks on their site listed with an asking price of $32,000.  There have been a lot of SS’s moving around the last couple of months, from record setting auction results and record setting asking prices, to rough projects and everything in between.  This car is obviously at the ‘rough projects’ end of the spectrum, but the matching number engine with correct intake components, the lack of any substantial rust or accident damage and the presence of much of the unique to SS’s trim makes this a pretty good starting point, even better if you’re a skilled DIYer who is enthusiastic to own one of these.  Bidding at time of writing is $18,200, reserve not met.  Check out BaT’s mention here and especially the comments -lots of humorous somewhat uninformed opinions peppered with wisdom.
Where to begin… panel fit is good, ride height is even at all corners, corner lights and bumper brackets are in the right places, no obvious rot etc.  Flat black is right up there with flat white and primer for smoothing things over and blending the bad and good.  Front wheel appears to be a Borrani, rear a Fergat.  Go look at it in person if you are serious about it -especially considering the sellers 80% feedback score and the rarity of SS parts.

1960's Sprint Speciale photographs in Germany

John sent me this note along with these great scans of period slides:

“These were taken by my father, John E. Grabowski, during his first tour of duty in Germany as a young officer in the U.S. Army. Timeframe would have been somewhere between 1965 and 1968 I believe. He was stationed in Manheim at the time. I scanned these from my late father’s old color slides. The only thing I know is that the Alfa belonged to a friend of my father’s, and that one of my father’s hobbies was photography (and he always loved sports cars).”
