Heater part 2: Heater valve 1493.54.709 and control cable 1488.31.723

Last installment we looked at the heat exchanger box itself, this time I’ll focus on the bits that hook it up and control the incoming hot water: the heater valve and the push/pull cable that controls the valve.  The first generation of Sprint’s had a heater valve (1483.54.711) that looked not far removed from a garden tap and you actually had to pop the hood and get out to turn on the flow of hot water to the heater core (if you didn’t realize you were going to want heat before you started out).  At some point this was deemed a little old fashioned so a cable operated valve was put to use -cousins of which can be found on Alfa’s for many years to follow.

Valve failure mode(s): hardening of rubber diverter seal, oxidation leading to through pits or breakage, loss.

Control cable failure mode(s): still/difficult operation, cable breakage/cut leading to too short, loss.

The current state of the parts supply has:

1493.54.709 with new diaphragm seal installed.  Like all rubber things, it just got hard and cracked after 50+ years.  The inner plateau seals against the port in the valve body, keeping the water out of the core when not wanted, the outer ring seals to the body to keep it from leaking when it’s open.

Market 425: Spider 00739 on eBay

Update 7/1/12: $9500. Not too bad for a fairly straight ’56 with the matching engine. You’ll see more from this car soon.

Giulietta Spider 750D 1495*00739, 1315*40574. This car is on eBay right now out of Denver. It looks fairly complete and in reasonable shape to restore. Will need a lot of work and $ to get it together, but as the seller states, these early cars do bring real money.

Looks like the usual ‘been apart for a while’ Spider project.  Door fits well.

Market 423: Fresh 1959 Spider 10103

Update 7/1/12: This car has been on eBay a few times. Despite it’s detail problems it looks like a decent car -I’m not sure why it’s not selling. Maybe the addition of the VIN/Engine numbers so people know exactly what they are bidding on and new/better pictures would help overcome the auction fatigue.

Giulietta Spider 10103. This car is on eBay right now out of Pennsylvania. It is described as having a fresh restoration, and there is evidence of that having occurring, but some details leave the prospective buyer wondering how much the restorer knew about these cars. Most are trivial, but restored is restored right? I have a HUGE piece I’ve been working on about restorations… getting about time I published it!

It is what it is, it looks good.  The door gaps on this side are excellent.  The hood corner on the drivers side sits up a bit.  I have to remind myself these are VERY complicated cars to put together if you don’t spend a lot of time doing research, and no one wants to pay you to do research.

Market 338: Neglected Spider 1600

Update 5/6/12:  I don’t remember if it failed to get any bids, or was ended early, but this car is back on eBay after a brief hiatus.  Seller seems to have done some research and knows what they are selling this time around.  Car looks a lot better now and the opening bid has gone from $500 to $6499.  Such a deal.

Market 417: Nice 1600 Spider 374485

Update 7/1/12:  $29,200 is good money for one of these late cars.

Giulia Spider 1600 10123*374485. This car is on eBay right now out of Scottsdale Az.  Condition is very good, not quite fancy auction fodder, but headed in that direction.  Short comings include the black engine compartment and trunk floor as well as some non originality in the interior such as mirror and shift knob.  It’s a good car that gets such minor criticisms.

Sometimes I feel like I’ve seen this scene so much it’s like dejavu.  Trim and paint looks great, shut lines are excellent and he lawn is sinfully green for a desert yard.

Market 409: Spider 750D 03629 -Clean

Update 7/1/12: This car did pretty well, selling for $37,500 -a mere $1000 less than their initial asking.

Update 4/23/12: This car has been listed on eBay. I suppose I should buy it so I have two red Giulietta’s with black paint below the rocker trim. Anyone care to guess what price the auction will end at?  Looks like Marina green in San Francisco -but Laurence will know for sure.

Picture above is a little more pro.  Looks very nice.

Original post 3/29/12: Giulietta Spider 750D 1495*03629, 1315*43387.  This car is offered by CarPlanet out of the San Francisco bay area for $38,500.  Car is in well loved and nicely taken care of condition with some low priority little improvements that can be done when the new owner chooses.  Overall finish is average, but a complete, dry, runner seems to be worth more than the sum of its parts.

Looks like a nice example.  Everything fits well and has an alluring sheen.  Black painted rockers can be a clue that rust repairs have been done, so check carefully if that scares you -I’m not saying it has rust, just pointing out what I think when I see black painted rockers.

Market 261: 1600 Spider 10123 375767 in Idaho (was in Buffalo)

Update 7/1/12: Seller has commented that this car has sold and is happy with the sale price.

Update 4/11/12: 18 months later this car turns up in VERY nice shape on eBay with a respectable $62,000 buy it now price.  List of work done reads like a wish list for my car.  Goes to show that even when you start with an excellent car there is a lot to do to make it ‘right’ if that’s your aim.  If you read the original ad below I mention that it had a Sprint seat adjusting knob and that I had an extra Spider one -I sold it to this seller, so a humble part from my stash is incorporated here.

Very nice Kevin!  Don’t know that eBay is the right place to list this, but it’s amazing to see the transformation.  Unusual perspective this.

Market 408: Spider 10103 170673 -just the body

Update 3/27/12: I am impressed by this sale price.  $11,000 for a body on suspension.  Such a deal.

3/25/12: Giulietta Spider 10103*170673.  This car is on eBay right now out of Appleton WI.  WYSIWYG with this one.  I don’t know how easy it is to deal with paint matching the lids and doors to a freshly painted body, but people are bidding on it, so it must make some sense.  If I had a rusty complete Spider from this series I’d buy this and move assemblies over to the new body one at a time as they are restored.  Might be fun.

Looks pretty good!  Paint is even, I don’t see signs of poorly done bodywork, and it’s ready to go.  Someone in the right part of the country (right being where you can get decent bodywork done for $20 or so an hour) could make a cottage industry of buying whole rusty cars, doing this to the body then selling the parts one at a time on eBay.

Market 404: Spider Project 10103 170922

Update 3/27/12: I think I would have sold this car for $8,100!

3/14/12: Giulietta Spider 10103 170922.  Close to the polar opposite of yesterdays Spider Veloce is this crusty project on eBay right now out of Florida.  It has all the bases covered: rust, dents, missing parts and the need for optimism on the part of the new owner -that said, it’s a pretty good parts car.

You can tell by the ride up front the engine is missing.  If the rear was a little lower I’d say it was in the trunk.  Note nose dent and rust in rocker.  All in all though…

Market 395: Spider 750D 05500 project in the Southwest

Giulietta Spider 750D 1495*05500.  This car was offered on the AlfaBB out of New Mexico for offers.  Sellers claims he rescued it from an imminent trip to the crushers.  Looks like a challenging but doable project or great parts car.  If you’re interested call Bruce: 915-892-3619.

Looks like it was someones parts car already.  Wheel seen here is a Borrani -a scarce part.  Door fits well, some rust in the rocker.  I’ve seen worse.
