Market 333: SS Project 00486 in Ohio

Update 6/21/12: Didn’t take long for the 50+% dealer tax to be added to this car.  More pictures show it to be complete and needy.  Here it is in Denver.

I definitely don’t like the look of knock-offs. Pretty straight car.

Original post 11/5/11: Giulietta Sprint Speciale 10120*00486, 00120*00949.  Frank pointed me in the direction of this car listed on Hemmings.  Condition is pretty good and it should make for a straight-forward restoration to ‘clean driver’ without going too far under water at the $40,000 asking price.  For a full on restoration it will require just as much work as a car like the disassembled project I listed recently.  Wheels are very rare (on a Giulietta) Borrani wires complete with a spare.  I’m personally not a big fan of the wire wheel look, but many are.

Am I blue?  Yes, but not the right shade.  Looks pretty good as far as derelict SS’s goes.

Market 425: Spider 00739 on eBay

Update 7/1/12: $9500. Not too bad for a fairly straight ’56 with the matching engine. You’ll see more from this car soon.

Giulietta Spider 750D 1495*00739, 1315*40574. This car is on eBay right now out of Denver. It looks fairly complete and in reasonable shape to restore. Will need a lot of work and $ to get it together, but as the seller states, these early cars do bring real money.

Looks like the usual ‘been apart for a while’ Spider project.  Door fits well.

Sprint front bumper and rocker trim mounting

My goal for the black Sprint right now is to get a lot of the big delicate stuff mounted on it, like bumpers, grills, and trim etc so I don’t have to find places to store it.  You probably saw the front bumper on the ground in front of the Sprint in the pictures of my new space -well, on the car seemed like the best place to store it, so I got to work mounting it.  Of course, it wasn’t straight forward, I had to chase a lot of threads, straighten some parts and go on and off a bunch of times with it until I was happy with how it fit.  It took several hours and went something like this.

Starting at the middle.  These grills and bumper are original, warts and all, I just polished them by hand as well as I could with steel wool and Mothers mag polish.  I’ll get some electricity involved and polish the heck out of them at some point.  Note the spacing between the grills and bumper is fairly even -took a lot of bumper mount bending to make that happen.  Grills will have to come back off to fit the lights but this was a good exercise.

My new space / Engauged part 2

It’s been a while since I had a dedicated space to work on my cars.  I thought I could do with one car and one parking space.  I thought I could keep my tools and parts at my dad’s place.  My acquisitive nature has thwarted those thoughts.  I now have: Giulietta Sprint, Glas 1700 GT, Lancia Appia (plus parts car), Toyota Stout, NSU Prima IIIKL Scooter and a 1963 Honda Trail 55.  As the Byrd’s paraphrased in some old book: there’s a time to gather stones together.  I moved out of my one car garage and storage space and signed on with another acquisitive Giulietta owner for a nice big space for very reasonable money.  Check it out -it’s why I haven’t been posting much (besides Rufus)!

The space.  1000 sq ft.  High ceilings.  Lights.  Skylights.  Giulietta’s waiting for help.

Market 423: Fresh 1959 Spider 10103

Update 7/1/12: This car has been on eBay a few times. Despite it’s detail problems it looks like a decent car -I’m not sure why it’s not selling. Maybe the addition of the VIN/Engine numbers so people know exactly what they are bidding on and new/better pictures would help overcome the auction fatigue.

Giulietta Spider 10103. This car is on eBay right now out of Pennsylvania. It is described as having a fresh restoration, and there is evidence of that having occurring, but some details leave the prospective buyer wondering how much the restorer knew about these cars. Most are trivial, but restored is restored right? I have a HUGE piece I’ve been working on about restorations… getting about time I published it!

It is what it is, it looks good.  The door gaps on this side are excellent.  The hood corner on the drivers side sits up a bit.  I have to remind myself these are VERY complicated cars to put together if you don’t spend a lot of time doing research, and no one wants to pay you to do research.

Market #1: White Giulia SS project

Update 5/31/12: Now on Craigslist.  Look at the pictures at the bottom of this write up. Looks like the same car to me. I wonder what you would receive if you sent them $25K?

Update 9/20/10: A Giulia SS was listed on Craigslist this morning for $30,000 with pictures of this car.  A scam?  Borrowed pictures?  I’m sure it will be answered before long…

5/20/09 Update: SOLD after 377 days! A guy I spoke to on the phone about this car last month, giving advise etc, has taken the plunge and bought this car.  I told him exactly what I have been saying about this car all along, it’s probably a good car that everyone interested in an SS is tired of seeing for sale (you only get one shot at a good eBay auction).  The selling price was around $45K and he seems very happy with the purchase.  Look for it to be present at shows and events in Southern California.  If anyone knows a good place to get keys made in Southern California post a comment as he needs to get door, trunk and glove box keys made.

I bet the seller of this SS would be happy if one of you kind readers would buy his 1965 Flavia Sport Zagato that is currently on Craigslist for $26,000 or trade.

3/31/09 Update: I think it will be a while before another car is featured here so many times. This car is on eBay again and this time it can be bought NOW for $47,500. Lets see if my ‘auction fatigue’ theory holds true. Now is your chance, you know you want it. I’ll offer the correct gauges to the new owner at 10% off.

3/18/09 Update: This car is now all repainted and spiffied up. Check it out on eBay now. $56,000 asking is big money but the car is pretty nice now.

Ercole Marelli -who knew!

I have this box of stuff to sell for a guy.  It’s mostly Marelli bits, mostly NEW stuff and mostly got me scratching my head.  Giulietta Veloce style round top regulators, but with arc shaped mounts to be bolted directly to the generator, or tall mounts or even very much like the ones I’m used to, but still slightly different.  Big ignition switches with 1950’s German style ‘keys’.  Toggles, pull switches etc. I google key word combo’s like ‘Marelli Aurelia’, ‘Marelli Ferrari 250’, ‘Marelli Fiat 1100’ -you get the idea, and nothing much helpful comes up.  What did come up is this Flickr set: Archivio Ercole Marelli, which led to it’s creator Fondazione ISEC.

It’s other worldly really.  Size, complexity, that sense of distant future past.  No wonder the good cars got Marelli!  I wasted a lot of time on this photo collection and am doubly impressed by the Italians.

Veloce engines starting with part number 1315.10.768

Update 6/23/12: Sold for $7100.

Original post 5/23/12: 12 hours later:  I just added a bunch of information at the end.  Read it again if you found the first draft interesting.

I see a lot of talk about Veloce engines on the AlfaBB and the 750/101 Yahoo group.  Some crusty pile that has a Veloce serial number is pulled out of a bog and the seller carpet bombs the lists looking for a Veloce engine as close to original number as possible.  Old time hoarders are rewarded for moth balling these gems, but what will the future look like?  I bring it up because there is a late 750 Veloce engine on eBay right now, number 1315*31525, that looks great and is receiving a lot of attention.  Look at the picture and add it up.  How much is enough to get it all at once?

Okay, so maybe it is a moth balled 40 years original low miles engine.  Could be a bitsa, but who really cares?  You’ve got a 58 Sprint/Spider Veloce that needs an engine: here it is.  Nice headers!

Market 420: 1600 Spider Veloce red/black/red 10118*390692

Update 7/1/12: This car did pretty well, selling for very close to the initial BiN price.  Anyone here the new owner??

Alfa Giulia 1600 Spider Veloce 10118*390692, 00121*02141. This car is on eBay right now from a seller who has brought us a few really good Veloce projects over the last few months. Car has had one owner, and an ill-advised repaint in red, but other than that looks to have been a fairly well cared for and respected member of the family.  Seller is correct that a repaint in black would do wonders for this car.  Unless there are hidden rabbit holes, the $48,500 buy it now seems only a tad high.

Car looks great.  Those mirrors in that location are sort of like a bull-ring in the nose of an otherwise pretty girl, or an invitation for Godzilla to step on it.  Door shut lines are very good.  Note to self -take pictures of a red car on lush green grass.

Market 419: 1750 powered 101 Sprint 23176 at Coys

Update 5/19/12: Some of you may have noticed this car didn’t go through the auction.  The seller contacted me to let me know he pulled it due to what he described as a lack of enthusiasm for the car and a desire to not give it away.  It is available for 43,000 Euro’s (about $55,000) out of Munich Germany.  Check out the pictures linked to by the vin number below.  It’s a great looking car.  If you’d like to contact the owner drop me a line at sprints @ giuliettas.com

Giulietta Sprint 10102 1493*23176. This car is being auctioned by Coys on May 12th in Monaco.  Car looks amazing and, though not entirely original, is tastefully done.  I like the body color, it looks pretty close to what I think of when I say Bluette, and the interior color also, though not an original option, suits the body color.  I’m not a fan of the body color on the wheels -adds a cartoonish aspect to it, but repainting wheels is among the easiest tasks.  I like that they tout the condition of the trunk yet fail to provide a picture.  Maybe they need a continuity editor…

Shut lines are great, trim looks wonderful and the car has a capable poise -no doubt matched by the 1750!  I’m trying to like those wheels -honest!  Is that rear view mirror positioned correctly?  I always thought the wide part went to the outside.
