Market #29: Nice Red Giulia Sprint Speciale in Los Angeles

Update 4/26/10:  This car is back on eBay with the same pictures and a zero feedback seller.  Scam?  Chances are… 

Update 7/2/08. Auction has been pulled off eBay as of about 1pm. I guess I was right to express my doubts about the validity of this auction. Buyers beware, this is the third time I have personally seen pictures from this group used to create a fake eBay auction. Has anyone ever fallen for one of these scams?

Giulia Sprint Speciale 10121*380999. This car is available right now on eBay out of Los Angeles with a starting bid of $45,200. This particular car, with these pictures has been on eBay twice in the last year, once in Hayward California and once in Savannah Georgia. On both of those occasions the auction was pulled within a day of being posted. Is this the real seller offering this car for sale right now? I don’t know, but more pictures and information is provided in this auction than either of the other two and both the others had buy it now prices that were way under market for this car, I think less than $20,000. There is no reserve and the starting bid is slightly under market for this car if everything checks out. Maybe this is a real no-scam auction.

No engine number is given so I would first ask about the number and request a picture of the number on the engine to make sure the stamping looks unaltered. In this price range, you have to verify everything. I would guess the engine number would turn out to be in the range 00121*00850 – 00121*01150.

Is it just me or is the bumper corner on the drivers side drooping a little? The supports and bracketry in this area are not very robust and as such easily damaged but also easily realigned. Other than that it looks great!

Market 212: 1 and 1/2 Spider Veloce’s

Update 4/26/10:  29 bids and $12,200 resulted in a sale.  Fair all the way around.

Giulia Spider Veloce 10118*390255, 00121*01757 & 10118*390245.  These cars are on eBay right now as a package deal out of Ithaca New York from a seller who sounds very knowledgable and realistic about the condition of the cars.  A little over 1000 of these late run 101 Spider Veloce’s were made, with engines in common with 1600 SS’s.  Fusi says the engines should be tipo 00118 but no such engine exists.  Values are strong for good ones, so a project is worth doing.

The overall picture isn’t too bad, but everything you see will require work.  At least the nose dimple is in pretty good shape.

Market 211: Spider 750D in Florida

Update 4/26/10: $26,450 after 30 bids is a pretty good result for this car, but considering the originality I’d call it well bought. 

 Giulietta Spider 750D 1495*06116, 1315*44942. This car is on eBay right now out of Florida.   Bidding after a few hours has already reached $18,900 -not bad for an original looking car.  There are a lot of pictures on the Flickr set (the VIN is the link).

Looks like a good honest well cared for specimen.  Paint is tough to judge -it being white and all, but from everyone-elses perspective (you on the road) it looks good.

Market 207: Sprint Veloce Lightweight project in LA

Update 4/16/10: More pictures have surfaced (link is to a large Flickr set).  This car needs a lot to bring it back and the fact that it hasn’t been snapped up by anyone who has gone and seen it in person tells me it’s very needy.  Make a reasonable offer and wait?

 The fire damage to the aluminum skin of the passenger door.  Ouch.  Rocker needs a little too…

Lots to do to correct the steel door frame and then refit the skin.

Giulietta Sprint Veloce. In the for sale section at the website for the UK based Giulietta Register is a rare thing indeed -a project Sprint Veloce Lightweight!  Car was apparently in some sort of fire and will require some more difficult than usual fabrication.  If you’ve been looking for one as a project this may be it.

Yes it looks scary, but I bet all the easy ones have been fixed already.  Doors, hood, trunk, window frames, headlight rings, and lots of other little bits are aluminum.   Continue reading “Market 207: Sprint Veloce Lightweight project in LA”

Spring Sprint sparks

It has been a long winter -this very morning it was cold and even my modern car (a full on spaceship compared to the Sprint) was somewhat inhospitable for the first 10 minutes of my drive to work as dewy windows, fogged mirrors and cold leather slowly came around.  About 6-8 weeks ago, when we had our first ‘hey it’s spring!’ weekend I decided it was time to dust the Sprint off, charge the battery, and start using it again.  Everything was going fine -it cranked over nice and fast, the carb was atomizing fuel, it had spark but it wouldn’t start.  I ended up bump starting it on my long steep driveway.  This was the first bump in a somewhat long, thoroughly bumpy road that only recently smoothed.

Starting at the happy ending… Me and the Mrs. in our Sprint on the track at Sears Point.  Thanks for the picture Greg!

Market 210: Amazing transformation 1960 Sprint

Update 4/22/10: $23,100 was the result with 21 bidders making a play.  Lets hope this car has finally found a home! 

Giulietta Sprint 10105 1493*22515.  This car is on eBay right now out of Philadelphia PA.  Why the ‘amazing transformation’ title?  We’ve seen this car before.  This car has the distinction of being the first car in the line up (in other words the cheapest) of both the 2008 and 2009 Sprint market summaries.  Check out Market 40 and Market 75.  I have often said, half in jest, that you could buy a somewhat complete Sprint shell and a $700 1970’s Spider runner, throw on a decent coat of paint, buy about $1500 worth of little stuff from Centerline or on eBay and create a pretty cool runner.  That looks like exactly what happened here.  Bravo!

Paint looks good, front end trim is good and all in all it looks attractive and right.  I would have no problem driving this Sprint.  Picasso museum?

Alfa 100 years track day hosted by CSRG at Sears Point (Infineon)

Update, later the same day: Will, GTV and Giulietta Sprint owner was there and took a LOT of pictures… he even took some of my Sprint!

In recognition of Alfa’s centenary, CSRG hosted 3 days of racing at Sears Point with several Alfa only races/groups, lunch time parade laps for Alfa’s and a corral in the paddock for all the spectator Alfa’s to park in. I can’t make Italy this year for the ‘official’ centenary in June, so this weekend was my chance to hang out with some fellow Alfa owners and think about what 100 years means.

Not your average vintage Alfa. This 33 was long, low and amazing looking. Too valuable to take on the track? Tell that to the guy in the Aston DB4 GT Zagato who was mixing it up with the GTV’s and Corvettes.

Market 186: rusty Spider project 10103 170124

Update 4/8/10: Failing the eBay route this car has been listed on Craigslist for $3000.  There has been some discussion on the 750-101 group all to the effect that it’s too much money.  The seller got very little for the drivetrain parts they sold before selling the car, so it’s starting to look like they should have kept it all together.  Some rube will probably buy it and then start the cycle anew on eBay , but at $5000.  Sigh.

Update 3/29/10: This car is back on eBay with lots more and better pictures, bidding has reached $2995 with one bid and it looks as though there is no reserve.  Maybe this fellow has found a new home.

Update 2/16/10: No bids, no buyer.  Patience friend Spider -you’ll have your day.

Giulietta Spider 10103 170124. This car is on eBay right now out of Oregon.  Seller has been auctioning off a lot of the little parts over the last couple of weeks and now the rest of the car has to go.  I just noticed this car was listed 7 minutes after the Sprint in market 185.  Odd how the world works.  Opening bid is $3995.  No takers as yet.

Looks like the typical scrappy parts car layed up 20 years ago and now maybe worth enough to be promoted from parts car to project.  We’ll see.  Lots of good parts to be seen, but all need some love to be viable.

Market 204: Giulietta Spider to enjoy or rerestore

Update 4/26/10: 26 Bids with a high of $14,801 was enough to see this car repatriated to Italy where it will probably see a little correction.  About right for buyer and seller.

Update 4/7/10: This car is now listed on eBay with yet more good pictures (which are now permanently here on Flickr).  It has problems but again, looks like a solid enough driver that if moved to a dry climate might never need further repair.  I’d certainly drive it as-is.

Update 3/26/10:  A bunch of pictures were posted on the AlfaBB and the seller is looking to make a deal.  The condition is as described.  Make an offer!

“1960 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider AR1495-10301. The engine is a later production Giulia unit 00112-14908 (Compression 178, 174, 180, 171). The transmission is a four speed (second gear is fine). The car underwent an amateur restoration in the mid 1990’s. The trunk floor was replaced and the rear driver’s floor patched. The repairs are serviceable, but not of a high quality. The car has a 10 foot paint job. The outer rockers are starting to rust at the wheel wells. There are a handful of very small perforations in the floors. All trim is present with the exception of the license plate lights and the trunk lock, which is inoperative.. The chrome work is fair with some dents in both bumpers. There is no top, but the complete top frame is with the car. This spider presents itself well and is a good driver with 4 new Vredestein 155/15 tires. The brakes have been rebuilt with all new seals and the radiator and Solex carb have been rebuilt. The car can be enjoyed as is or it would be an excellent candidate for a full restoration. Please call for a more complete description. I have many high resolution photos of the car including the floors and trunk. 607-745-6482 cell. The car is located in Cortland, NY, 30 miles south of Syracuse. Price $15,000. I would consider an interesting trade, preferably an Alfa or Lancia.”

Giulietta Spider 10103*10301, 00112*14908 (not original). This Spider is listed on Hemmings right now for $15,000.  Price is decent if you don’t care about trying to fix the flaws described in the ad text such as poor rust repairs to trunk and bubbles forming in the rockers.  If it runs and drives, I say use it and fix it little by little along the way.

Seller describes it as a 10 footer paint job and I have to agree -looks really good here.  Complete, presentable and ‘right’ looking.

Market 209: Nice red Giulietta Spider

Update 4/26/10: 32 bids were placed and $27,201 was the highest.  Middle of the road for one of these in this condition.  I think inclusion of the original engine would have helped a little but this is about what they are going for…

Giulietta Spider 750D 1495*07104.  This car is listed on eBay out of Troy Michigan, no doubt hoping to ride the coat tails of Market 206’s $45,400 result for a nice red Giulietta Spider normale.  This car looks good in the pictures but they are of somewhat low resolution and without the sellers name recognition of the 206 Spider, it is unlikely to be bid up quite as high.  I am pleased to finally be able to incorporate something in the spirit of my ‘Pushing Product’ series here.

This is called ‘selling the dream’.  The red convertible, the hot chick, and a seemingly warm summer day.  Not sure what the train signifies, but I’m sure I’ll think of something.  Car sits just right and the panel gaps look good.  Of course the first question in the Q&A section of the auction was regarding the possible inclusion of the girl -maybe in another arguably less civilized country…
