Market 186: rusty Spider project 10103 170124

Update 4/8/10: Failing the eBay route this car has been listed on Craigslist for $3000.  There has been some discussion on the 750-101 group all to the effect that it’s too much money.  The seller got very little for the drivetrain parts they sold before selling the car, so it’s starting to look like they should have kept it all together.  Some rube will probably buy it and then start the cycle anew on eBay , but at $5000.  Sigh.

Update 3/29/10: This car is back on eBay with lots more and better pictures, bidding has reached $2995 with one bid and it looks as though there is no reserve.  Maybe this fellow has found a new home.

Update 2/16/10: No bids, no buyer.  Patience friend Spider -you’ll have your day.

Giulietta Spider 10103 170124. This car is on eBay right now out of Oregon.  Seller has been auctioning off a lot of the little parts over the last couple of weeks and now the rest of the car has to go.  I just noticed this car was listed 7 minutes after the Sprint in market 185.  Odd how the world works.  Opening bid is $3995.  No takers as yet.

Looks like the typical scrappy parts car layed up 20 years ago and now maybe worth enough to be promoted from parts car to project.  We’ll see.  Lots of good parts to be seen, but all need some love to be viable.

Market 204: Giulietta Spider to enjoy or rerestore

Update 4/26/10: 26 Bids with a high of $14,801 was enough to see this car repatriated to Italy where it will probably see a little correction.  About right for buyer and seller.

Update 4/7/10: This car is now listed on eBay with yet more good pictures (which are now permanently here on Flickr).  It has problems but again, looks like a solid enough driver that if moved to a dry climate might never need further repair.  I’d certainly drive it as-is.

Update 3/26/10:  A bunch of pictures were posted on the AlfaBB and the seller is looking to make a deal.  The condition is as described.  Make an offer!

“1960 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider AR1495-10301. The engine is a later production Giulia unit 00112-14908 (Compression 178, 174, 180, 171). The transmission is a four speed (second gear is fine). The car underwent an amateur restoration in the mid 1990’s. The trunk floor was replaced and the rear driver’s floor patched. The repairs are serviceable, but not of a high quality. The car has a 10 foot paint job. The outer rockers are starting to rust at the wheel wells. There are a handful of very small perforations in the floors. All trim is present with the exception of the license plate lights and the trunk lock, which is inoperative.. The chrome work is fair with some dents in both bumpers. There is no top, but the complete top frame is with the car. This spider presents itself well and is a good driver with 4 new Vredestein 155/15 tires. The brakes have been rebuilt with all new seals and the radiator and Solex carb have been rebuilt. The car can be enjoyed as is or it would be an excellent candidate for a full restoration. Please call for a more complete description. I have many high resolution photos of the car including the floors and trunk. 607-745-6482 cell. The car is located in Cortland, NY, 30 miles south of Syracuse. Price $15,000. I would consider an interesting trade, preferably an Alfa or Lancia.”

Giulietta Spider 10103*10301, 00112*14908 (not original). This Spider is listed on Hemmings right now for $15,000.  Price is decent if you don’t care about trying to fix the flaws described in the ad text such as poor rust repairs to trunk and bubbles forming in the rockers.  If it runs and drives, I say use it and fix it little by little along the way.

Seller describes it as a 10 footer paint job and I have to agree -looks really good here.  Complete, presentable and ‘right’ looking.

Market 209: Nice red Giulietta Spider

Update 4/26/10: 32 bids were placed and $27,201 was the highest.  Middle of the road for one of these in this condition.  I think inclusion of the original engine would have helped a little but this is about what they are going for…

Giulietta Spider 750D 1495*07104.  This car is listed on eBay out of Troy Michigan, no doubt hoping to ride the coat tails of Market 206’s $45,400 result for a nice red Giulietta Spider normale.  This car looks good in the pictures but they are of somewhat low resolution and without the sellers name recognition of the 206 Spider, it is unlikely to be bid up quite as high.  I am pleased to finally be able to incorporate something in the spirit of my ‘Pushing Product’ series here.

This is called ‘selling the dream’.  The red convertible, the hot chick, and a seemingly warm summer day.  Not sure what the train signifies, but I’m sure I’ll think of something.  Car sits just right and the panel gaps look good.  Of course the first question in the Q&A section of the auction was regarding the possible inclusion of the girl -maybe in another arguably less civilized country…

Market 208: 1960 SS in NL

Giulietta Sprint Speciale.  This car is available right now from VSOC in the Netherlands but Anamera has better resolution pictures and more information.  This car looks about right for the 39,750 Euro ($53,700 at time of writing) asking price.  If anyone talks to the seller, let me know what the VIN is please.

As the maker intended.  There is some photo distortion that makes the fenders appear to rise up from the door gaps.  Very nice paint and trim.  Those look like repro headlight rings.

Here is the news… general Giuliettas update

First item:  News flash! My first of two payments has been made on SS 10121*380211 after 3 months of exchanging emails and pictures and basically waiting for Spring to come.  The car is apart (has been apart for about 5 years -was a runner before that) and requires some rust repair and all, but is complete, matching numbers and comes with a lot of new parts.  It was basically one of those deals where I couldn’t not buy it knowing what I do now about these cars.

Where does that leave me with 10120*00413?  We’ll see.  A local Alfa guy has been looking for an SS shell as the basis for a race car and now that a lot of the rust is repaired it’s probably a much more doable looking project.  No promises either way.  I did just spend a miniscule fortune on a radiator out of the UK for it…  Any interest??

This is how you find them or rather they find you.  Truth is this was the other car I was considering when I bought 00413 all those months ago.  The detail oriented in the crowed are right now trying to figure out what’s going on in the front behind the grill opening.  It’s just a repair panel laying in there.

‘Production and Register’ page finally stable

Update 3/22/10:  I have moved all of my photo files to Flickr so they would be harder to lose -these are about 10% pictures I’ve taken, 10% pictures readers like you have sent and the rest are  pictures from classified ads, forums and the like that I saved.  All these pictures have been linked to the vin’s of the cars they are of on the ‘Production and Register’ page.  What’s the point?  Well, if you’re looking for a picture of some part of a car, some original color, some option or references/examples to help inform you about a car, chances are you’ll find it among the pictures.

If you have pictures of any cars to add I’d be glad to add it.

This picture of a Sprint Veloce lightweight at the beginning of a race was one of those ‘where did it come from’ pictures I found when organizing.  If you go to Christian-Claude you will see many interesting pictures like this from France.  Hopefully they don’t mind me posting this since I am sending them traffic.

Original post 4/2/09: I’ve been struggling with the layout of the production and register page the last few days but it is now fairly stable. Why go through the trouble you ask? The generally referenced production lists have flaws and don’t really address the numbering systems for US cars and this has led to a few restored cars I’ve come across with the wrong numbers stamped on their repro vin plates and in some cases owners who assume an engine is not original because its number doesn’t fall into the stated range for their vin.

sprint-buckThis is the first time I’ve seen a contemporary picture of the original Bertone wood buck for the Sprint. Thanks Rogerio Machado for posting this to Flickr. Continue reading “‘Production and Register’ page finally stable”

Market 203: Late Sprint hotrod in Monaco RM auction

Giulietta/Giulia Sprint 385086.  This car that I found on Anamera is going to be auctioned May 1st 2010 in Monaco by RM auctions (listed between a Frua AC 428 and a Aston DB2 Vantage!).  Car wears a 10112 Sprint 1600 build plate on the firewall but the vin number itself is that of a 10103 1300 Giulietta Sprint from 1965.  I am guessing the vin is 10112*358086.  I’ll send an email off into the cloud and see if they can clarify this.  Car is set up for fast street or track use being stripped of bumpers and other unnecessaries and having a roll bar and race style controls.

Car looks very good in this view with bumper missing and mount holes filled.  Alfa grill badge is missing, no doubt to save a few grams.  I like the blacked out mesh of the grills.  Rear view mirror is in an unoriginal place.  I like the cartoon dead fish eye X’s. A close look at the front reveals a thick sway bar.

Market 202: Rough early Sprint in France

Giulietta Sprint 750B.  Listed as a 1956 in LVA, the leading classic newspaper in France, is this rusty Sprint.  Price of entry is 5000 Euro’s or about $6800.  Without more pictures I would have to say this is pretty ambitious as a project since a Sprint this early in good, though unrestored shape can be had in the mid $20k’s.

It looks to be complete other than the missing metal from the bodywork.  Rims may be the early rolled edge style -can’t really tell in pictures of this resolution.  Advertisement indicates it was an original French delivery car and thus probably has the glass brake fluid reservoir and yellow headlights.  Door gaps are superb here for what it’s worth.

Market 201: clean 1600 Spider in Florida

Update 4/26/10:  Car has been sold as of 4/4/10.  I imagine the selling price was a little shy of the asking, perhaps about $26k?

Giulia Spider 10123*373471, 00112*15253. This car is currently listed as for sale on the Alfa BB out of Florida.  Asking price is $28,500 which includes a Pininfarina hard top to be restored and an original Giulia Spider hood.  I would call this restored to very nice driver condition.  Not necessarily original or perfect but attractive and usable.

The money shot for sure, like a mature super model in sunsets orange glow.  Remember that this is what the average person sees before you go and pick the details that are not perfect apart.

SS Veglia gauge restore part 2 -finale-

I am back from vacation but need a few days to see what’s going on and get back into the swing of things so another rerun for you all.

Originally posted 7/28/09: Following on my success with the Super gauges intended for my TI and the two Sprint Speciale gauges, I decided tackling the last gauge for the SS was the thing to do yesterday when I spent some hours at the shop.

Outwardly the Tachometer was the middle child, not so cosmetically usable as is as the tri-gauge and not so obviously water damaged as the Speedometer. Functionally it was not much better off than the Speedometer. This is how it went:

tach front beforeI would probably have paid $40 for this on eBay and been disappointed when I received it if I didn’t know then what I know now. Needles are pointed where they belong but other than that it looks bad. At least the plastic insert is not yellowed.
