Market 231: new second rustiest Spider 750D

Giulietta Spider 750D 1495*06844, 1315*45467. Gullwing Motor Cars in Astoria New York is offering this hedge/bog find Giulietta Spider right now for $4950.  The rust situation with this car is palpable and even the most optimistically rigorous DIYer should be taken aback.  The good: very complete, super low miles (assuming the speedometer was functional for every mile the car traveled), one owner (who is culpable in the death of this car)… the bad: pretty much everything.

I wonder if pulling a car like this from its resting place would be considered grave robbery… sand blasting may result in this cars disappearance.

Market 214: 1600 Spider rolling restoration

Update 7/26/10: This car has had a string of unsuccessful runs on eBay the last few weeks -the latest seeing bidding hit $10,850 with reserve not met.  I’d have a hard time swallowing a $3100 loss too…

Update 7/1/10: This Spider finds itself back on eBay after a few weeks vacation in Santa Barbara.  Assuming the full price of $12,850 was paid and it was shipped out to California -I will guess the new reserve is about $14,000 -a tough sell but may be doable.

Looking about the same as before.

Update 5/10/10: I should get paid to do this.  As I predicted it sold for slightly more than the AlfaBB asking after a run through eBay.  $12,850 with  30 bids.  Well Sold and if the engine is put together competently well bought.

Update 5/3/10: This car is now on eBay which means there is a finite amount of time before it is sold.  That’s the beauty of eBay -unless you screw it up by starting too high or having an unrealistic reserve, your car is going to sell.

A little leg never hurt a picture of a car.

Giulia 1600 Spider 10123*372577, 00112*00584. This car is available for $12,500 out of Arlington VA of on the Alfa BB.  Seller is a well known AROC guy who has several other Alfas and seems to know his stuff where these cars are concerned.  Car is a runner/driver and, while quality paint before reassembly seems like a good idea, one could probably just throw it together and start using it if  cosmetics were not an issue.

Nose has been replaced but doesn’t look too bad here.  Would be a decent ‘driver’ quality car if all this trim was bolted on.

Market 229: Another day, another Spider Veloce

Giulia Spider Veloce 10118*390171. Doing a thus-far unsuccessful tour of eBay right now is this good looking example of the late 1600 Spider Veloce.  There is some almost humorous dialog in the Q & A section surrounding the as yet undisclosed engine number and for good reason -without the original engine and with other vagueness such as the lack of underside pictures, the $35K opening bid may be a little too much in my opinion.

Oh boy -a slightly blurry picture of a nice looking red car in the sun -panel fit of course looks great. I am not sure but I think this car has Fergat’s on the front and Borrani’s on the back -not the end of the world but worthy of giving pause -especially if the seller never noticed.

Market 227: Needy Spider Roller 09363

Update 6/24/10: Is $8601.50 a good deal for this car?  Not sure, but that’s what it sold for.  I’d like to see a little less rust for that money, but it is nearly complete.

Giulietta Spider 10103/4 09363, 00102*25390. This Spider is on eBay right now out of Illinois from a seller who seems to always have a few Giulietta bits on offer.  Condition is the usual straight clean car with some race history that was allowed to get rusty during a period of neglect.  Bidding is just shy of $5K as I write.

Nose is in good shape, hood fits well and the original paint was probably salvagable before rust was allowed to snack on this car.  I wonder what the ‘CP’ racing group is?

Market 197: Bring a Trailer Exclusive Giulia 1600 Spider

Update 6/11/10: Is anyone surprised that this car had a hard time selling for $34,000, sold for a chunk less and now has turned up in Texas at DriveSource for $32,500?  I’m not.  I stand by my assertion that you have one (or if you are lucky two) chances to sell a car for a really good price and whether you wear the buying public out with multiple ebay auctions or stand by a slightly unrealistic price for a few months, you create a sense of undesireability or flaw -deserved or not, that makes potential buyers think something must be wrong with the car if it hasn’t sold.  DriverSource has put some effort into the car and it really looks great these days, and I can say -having seen this car in person on the Lap of Marin not long ago, that it is a nice car, so maybe this car will find a happy home soon.

This car has been polished to within an inch of its’ life.  Cool!  I still think the windshield wipers sit way too high on the glass.

Original post 3/5/10: Giulia Spider 1600 10123*392337, 00112*15937.  As usual Bring a Trailer has the drop on a cool car and have brought it to market exclusive style, this time in the form of this very late Giulia Spider.  It’s located in the San Francisco Bay Area and looks to be a pretty nice example.  $34,000 must be spent to own it, -top of the private seller market,  which means it must be test driven and inspected in person -rather the opposite of a chore.

Nice car in a nice setting.  These late Spiders are solid reliable and fun, so where better to drive it than among the vines.  Mirrors are a little more forward than usual. Continue reading “Market 197: Bring a Trailer Exclusive Giulia 1600 Spider”

Market 224: Giulia SS in Austria

Giulia Sprint Speciale 10121*381221, 00121*01213.  This car is for sale in Austria on Mobile.de.  It has some odd wrong parts on it but overall is in good shape.  It can be yours for 49,900 Euro’s or $60,800… quite a bit less in the dollar world that this time last year.

Good looking clean example of a fairly late model SS.  Hood fits great and all the trim is present and needs nothing.  Europe has some big license plates!

Market 223: 101 Spider Normale project

Update 6/15/10: $12,634.01, reserve not met was the outcome.  Has not been relisted so maybe the high bidder and seller are working something out.

Giulietta Spider 10104 1495*08359, 1315*011500. This neglected but otherwise solid Spider project is on eBay right now out of Illinois.  Car is said to be a long time Arizona car which bodes well for those worried about rust -Arizona is very dry.  If you’re looking for a DIY project this might just be the car for you.

How you want to find them: straight bodies, paint you could live with almost indefinitely, about complete and untouched for years (whitewalls provide evidence of this).

Market 222: Spider prototype 750D 00007

Update 8/13/10: Sold and on its way to Milan.

Update 7/6/10: Spider did 2 tours of eBay with no takers.  A purchase like this requires some serious non-coincidental provenance corroboration so I’m not surprised it didn’t sell.  I think as I state at the end of the market review that this car needs to go through an auction that can authenticate it if the seller wants this kind of money.

Giulietta Spider 750D 1495*00007, 1315*40009. This Spider, one of the Pininfarina prototypes, is available now on eBay for $225,000.  I have no real side by side comparison to make any comment on the value of this car but would say that the asking is in line with what I would ask if I had it.

Why? I think the Bertone Spiders (00002 and 00004) are probably million+ dollar cars these days. Pininfarina Spider 00001 (or is it 00003?), now residing at the Alfa museum and 00005 (I think), in the hands of the collector who also has the Bertone Sprint convertible and SVZ ‘Goccia’, both having the wrap around windscreen and side-curtain style windows are probably $300,000 – a million.  Official numbering of the Spiders started in the mid-teens in Fusi and the cars between those mentioned above and 00016, the first production car, are likely similar to this car and close to the production models cars and hence not as valuable, maybe $100k to $500K depending on lots of stuff.  I seem to recall having seen two or three other pre-production  Spiders like this but can’t remember where.  Early race history usually adds value but I can’t say for sure if it does for a car like this.

As an aside, there is a chance that Ghia made a Giulietta Spider prototype.  Anyone know anything about this?

I guess what I am saying is that in my opinion, the more the prototypes diverge from the standard cars, the more they are worth and this car is fairly close to the production version.  Condition is the kind of ‘nice original driver’ I prefer.

Mythical beast: one of the Pininfarina prototypes.  ‘Points’ on the grill tusks are the only visual cue that you are seeing anything special here, beyond your usual 750D.

The rear view mirror II

As part of my push to just get the Giulietta SS on the road and to satisfy a momentary curiosity piqued when I unpacked the Giulia SS, I got my rearview mirrors together and compared the parts.  As you can see it is true that these two are exactly the same.  Plan was to make the best unrestored mirror I could from the parts on hand, see if there were any parts I was missing and get a sense of the work required to have a restored mirror be the end result.  I’m not missing any parts and to have a restored mirror I need to:  Get the body re-wrinkle finished (~$5 can), get the base and surround rechromed (~$100) , get the glass resilvered (~$20) and put it all together.

Assembled and parts side by side for comparison.  The disassembled one came with the Giulia SS, the other was an eBay purchase.
