Sprint Speciale 10120

The Sprint Speciale History:

In the early 1950’s Franco Scaglione, working for Carrozzeria (Italian for coachbuilder) Bertone designed a group of concept Cars based on the 1900 platform: the Berlinetta Aerodinamica Technica or BAT cars. The cars’ styling married the latest aerodynamic concepts with wildly futuristic lines and resulted in what are today considered masterworks. Among the three, BAT 9 shows the strongest family resemblance to the Sprint Speciale.

At the same time Nuccio Bertone was doing work on a design for Alfa Romeo, a new, less expensive line of cars based on a thoroughly modern 1300CC twin cam 4 cylinder engine that came to be known as the 750 line. Bertone presented Alfa with what we know today as the Sprint and it went into production in 1954. Alfa being Alfa did what was expected and took the new car racing. The very first Sprints were no match for the lightweight well developed Porsche 356 based racers of the time so a new line was created based on the Sprint body: the Sprint Veloce (SV). Flab was trimmed, dual side-draft Webers were added, compression was increased and all around the Sprint was developed into a potent race car. These early, highly developed versions became known as the SV Alleggerita (SVA), or ‘lightened’ Sprint Veloce and were pure bred-for-sport racers.

Early lightweight Sprint Veloce (SVA) once owned by Swedish royal family.

In 1956 Alfa approached Bertone again to build a car that would be a step up from the SV but based on the new generation of Giulietta that was going to be phased in to production sometime in 1958 and known as the 101 line. Aerodynamic efficiency was the only direction unexplored in the original SV/SVA specification so one can imagine Franco Scaglione was turned to for his aerodynamic expertise to wring a little more speed out of the Giulietta platform. The resulting car was the SS, meant to be the successor to the SV and SVA as the potent racer of choice moving forward. SV production would continue when it was released, but without the lightweight specification, making it more of a fast touring car. Of course exceptions exist.

Press photo of one of the first SS’s. I wonder if this car still exists?

Period shot of the cabin.

First iteration had this tail light arrangement, which has a part number in the parts book. Do any SS’s with this rear exist now?

Turns out the B&W car above is red.

SS 00001, one of the early prototypes. Could this be the car above?

The SS was favorably received at the motor shows and the groundwork to begin production was in place but the SS’s place in the Alfa line up was not to be as top-of-the-line racer. A new breed of SV based racer had emerged that could beat the SS, which was considered overweight and had yet to live up to its promise.

SVA 01944 rebodied in mid 1956 by Zagato after a crash, the birth of the SVZ.

SV’s and SVA’s which were re-bodied by Carrozzeria Zagato, collectively known as SVZ’s but only circumstantially related, began to easily win races against stock cars. Initially, SVZ’s were cars re-bodied after serious crashes when it was cheaper to start again from scratch than try and repair the bodies back to stock, but later some SV’s went straight from the Bertone to Zagato. These were expensive cars when new, so throwing them away was not an option. The SS never stood much of a chance against the SVZ’s, which were lighter and had more power. Gradually the shape which later became the Sprint Zagato (SZ) emerged and Alfa went into a deal with Zagato to produce a homologated, factory sanctioned race car, the Sprint Zagato.

A 1962 SZ.

Alfa decided to place the SS in it’s 1959 line up as the touring version of the SZ. They share the same Tipo 10120 engine, a twin cam 1300 producing 100 hp, and some other features, but the SZ is all race and for the most part the SS is all street. Some SS’s did find their way to the track, but with limited success. The SS sold consistently in small numbers, seeing a redesign in 1962 to take advantage of upgrades from the new 105 line, the most noteworthy of which is the Tipo 00121 1600cc engine making a claimed 121 hp. Total production numbers for the SS vary depending on which Alfa history you read.

Fusi claims 1366 Giulietta Sprint Speciales and 1400 Giulia Sprint Speciales for a total production of 2766. Serial numbers are not sequencial for the first 500 or so Giulietta SS’s and for all SS’s there is little correlation between engine and body number, though in most cases these numbers seem to be within ‘a couple of hundred’ of each other.

A giulietta SS. Too slow and opulent for the track?

I guess not. SS at 1960 Targa Florio.

The above is written off the top of my head combining information found in the ‘Complete SVZ file’ thread on the Alfa BB and a list of books I’ll add later. Please email me any corrections to sprints at guiliettas dot com. Thanks.

Sprint 10102/10105 Normale

In mid-1959 the Sprint 750B ended its manufacturing run and was replaced by the 10102/10105 Sprint, 10105 was the US designation. The main difference between a 1959 750B and a 1959 10105 is the engine going to a full 101 specification, with the larger head and fuel pump driven off the oil pump/distributor shaft among other changes. Production of the 1300 Giulietta Sprint continued through 1965 but was a trickle through the last few years –probably continued for markets with licensing fee structures based on displacement.

Sprint 750B second ‘Egg crate’ series

This is where the confusion really begins. Bertone, no doubt tired of scouring the countryside for talented panel beaters to churn out Sprint after Sprint using mallets, wood bucks and occasionally old tree stumps, and Alfa, no doubt tired of selling spare doors, hoods trunks etc that didn’t fit unless one of said panel beaters accompanied it to its’ destination to ‘adjust’ it so it fit, and both, no doubt forseeing a never ending demand for Sprints, got together, paid one up and comer last name of Giugiaro to face lift the maturing Sprint design in preparation for a modern hydraulic press approach to production, and viola, the face the Sprint would wear through the end of its’ production life was born.

It can be seen at a glance that the basic look of the Sprint is the same as the first series, with obvious changes to the grill opening brightwork.  A side-by-side comparison though, shows the early and late cars to be full of little differences.

I am of the opinion that while the body and interior changed somewhat, the part that Alfa sent to Bertone to have the body welded on to didn’t change, and neither did the drivetrain in the beginning. This series ended the use of 1315*0xxxx engines at 1315*09002, which would cause one to conclude that Alfa Romeo made 9002 750B Sprints.  Not actually sure if this is the case.

Sprint Veloce Confortevole 750E

For whatever reason, the lightweight Sprint Veloce was discontinued in 1957. I have read it had to do with a lack of competitiveness against the Zagato Giulietta variants and the imminent launch of the Sprint Speciale among others. I would argue economics had as much to do with it as anything else. The manufacturing inefficiencies required of a special lightweight body separate from the Normales, along with its peculiar trim could be eliminated if they built the Veloce out of a lightly modified Normale body. This is just what they did and the Confortevole was born.

bodynumberThis is the Bertone body stamping for a Veloce Confortevole. Note that it ends with an *A*. The body was the same as the normale Sprint but… well probably not totally. The Sprint Veloce lightweight ceased to be the weapon of choice on the race track some time in 1957 and the lightweight was no doubt expensively inefficient to produce so they stopped making it, replacing it with the Confortevole, which was intended to fill more of a GT market segment than that as a dedicated race car.

Framed wind up windowsThe first 50 cars had this arrangement with the aluminum frame and wind up window. I’ve never seen the guts so I cant say if it has any differences below the surface. The last 149 had regular wind up windows, 142 of these 1493*06469 – 1493*06611, were made in unbroken series and account for the last early body style cars. The Confortevole was a sort of transition car for Alfa, who was focusing their go-fast resources on the SS at this point. The extremely short run of these cars makes them highly prized, though not as exotic and therefore expensive as a lightweight.

oilpanAll but the earliest Veloce’s had this oil pan with it’s cooling labyrinth built into the bottom. Note the rubber buffer to keep the pan from bumping against the frame rail. The bracket for this is only found on Veloce’s. All Confortevoles have the same mechanical spec as the lightweight.

Sprint Veloce Alleggerita 750E

As of 8/11/10 there are 39 Sprint Veloce’s on the register that are confirmed to exist.  21 of the cars on the register have links to photo sets.

l19Sprint Veloce Alleggertia racing in France. Check out Saffier de Bard, lots of great period pictures to be found.
The appearance of the Sprint Veloce was inevitable. Creating an even faster version of an existing sports car to take racing was standard practice among auto makers who raced in the 1950’s. This seems to be especially true of the Italians who perfected this approach to car building. You can almost imagine the scene after Alfa debuted the Giulietta Sprint in the racing world only to be beaten by Porsches in the same class.

The first line is the Fusi stated range for the year and the following are numbers on cars that have been reported. d’Amico and Tabucchi have some differences listed and I’ll try and work them in later. Eventually as enough data points become available I’ll modify or remove the year/range headings and provide a better view of the flow of things at Alfa and particularly Bertone in through these production runs. An entry ending in Ref. is for an important car which may or may not exist.

30661Veloce’s were marked 750E here on the build plate along with the body and engine number. 750 Veloce’s all have 1315*3XXXX engine numbers.

30659Bertone body numbers for the Veloce’s were changed to start with 77 rather than the 65 used on Normales. The total of ~610 comes from the body number explanation for 750B’s. I’ve never seen a non lightweight Veloce below about chassis number 6000.

badges svBody shape of the Alleggerita Sprint Veloce’s is the same as the Normales. Aluminum doors hood and trunk were used, but not necessarily on all of these cars. Badges were updated as seen here.

bigiThere was only one guiding principal at work on the Sprint Veloce: go faster (and beat the Porsche’s)! With this in mind, both sides of the power balance equation were adjusted. The engine power output side of the equation was increased by using Weber 40DCO3’s, higher lift cams and a shaved head (among many other things), and the various factors on the other side of the equals sign that are multiplied by velocity were reduced. Or, if you prefer, the engine was tuned to increase power and the rest of the car was tuned to remove weight, rolling resistance and drag.

pass doorCompare this to a Normale door panel. The window itself going from glass to plexi doesn’t save much weight, but the winder mechanism and associated brackets and controls are massively heavy for the job they have to perform. Almost looks like a British roadster removable side curtain. This particular car was ordered by the prince of Sweden new with various non-lightweight feature as a hopped up road car, rather than the out and out racer the Veloce was originally intended to be.

bighThe tuned engine of the Veloce had a higher redline (rev limit) so they made a special tachometer with a 6600 rpm redline that went up to 8000 rather than the 6200 redline/7000 limit of the Normale. Other interior details included the omission of the choke knob and glove box door (this car was specially ordered to include both) and supposedly lighter weight construction seats.

under backVeloce final drive was changed to 10:41 from 9:41 to take advantage of the increased power and provide for a higher top speed. The typical use for a Veloce was a race like the Targa Florio or Mille Miglia, a long distance road race, so the fuel capacity was increased from 56 liters (14.8 US gallons) to 84 liters (22.2 US gallons). Thats 28 Kilograms or 61.7 pounds more fuel carried. These little cars are all about conservation of momentum so I doubt it mattered much. Note that most of the volumetric increase was achieved by growing the tank in the direction of the rear axle keeping it low and as near the center of the car as possible. This growth of the fuel tank necessitated the rear emergency brake cable and yoke type set up seen here.

latest10_20_08 252While this car is a fake Veloce from back when owners felt the addition of side draft Webers allowed for the use of this badge, they did get the rear circular badge correct in that they left off the chrome over brass base that goes under this badge. A detail that is usually overlooked by restorers of real Veloces, who tend to add this little trim bit.

The Sprint 750B first series

As 8/11/10 there are 59 first series 750B Sprints on the register.

See. It’s like our 1900 Sprint only smaller.

The 20th of April, 1954 the Sprint debuted at the ‘Salon de Torino’ car show. To generate interest a lottery was held where they were going to give away 50 cars (or was it 200?) to lucky winners. I don’t know that anyone ever received a ‘lottery’ Sprint but I have read that the winners were called but no cars were ready to give away. Public anticipation for the car is said to have been intense. Nuccio Bertone has been quoted as saying that if he had known how many Sprints Bertone would eventually have to build he would not have accepted the contract.

A wooden ‘buck’ was used to give body panels their shape. A craftsman beat metal panels by hand on this. I don’t know how many of these bucks Bertone had in their workshops, not many I suspect. It’s possible, highly probably in fact, that if you own a 750 Sprint, its panels were formed on this.

The first Sprint prototype. A chick magnet even then.

In 1954 Giulietta Sprint 750B chassis numbers 1493*00011 – 00023 are recorded by Fusi. Prototypes definitely existed, I have seen pictures of several besides that seen above, but I am not certain whether these have chassis numbers that are included in this range.

1f56_27Here’s how the numbers are supposed to look. 750 B Sprints had body numbers starting with 1493 and engines of type 1315*0XXXX. Bertone body numbers started with 65, which can barely be seen above. Early on the Alfa assigned body number closely tracked the Bertone assigned body number but by the end of the run, it lagged by an average of 611 which Is why I say ~6000 of this series of Sprint were built.

IMG_0308750B 1493*00349, 1315*00364, Bertone body 65345. Typical early car front with small headlights, ‘eyebrow’ grill trim and one piece center grill. Earliest cars are said to have aluminum hood and trunk lids.

IMG_0317Same car as above. Note that dash is body color, that the knobs for the controls are a bit different than later cars and it’s column shift. I read frequent commentary to the effect that column shift was rare for these cars, I think the earlier the car, the more likely it is to be column shift. I’d be surprised if less than a quarter of this series Sprint were column shift Cambio Volante.

7966e6d233Another early dash, this one in 1493*01149. Horn button looks like later style to me with horn and flasher built into the same button. Note this car is also column shift. I don’t have any pictures of an early car that is not column shift.

b4229f8c69Same car as above. This is what the early door panels looked like. Cream colored insert is textured cloth, blue is vinyl of some sort.

Tail LightThe earliest style tail light.

4a5045a7ec An early 750B engine. Most easily identified by the fuel pump above the water pump and the in-hose thermostat. Tudor washer bottles as seen here are hard to find. If one gets deep into the mechanical parts book for the Giulietta, there are small differences to be found among the first 1000 or so cars. They changed carbs and manifolds a couple of times, but the basic 750 series engine was nearly perfect right from the beginning.

Rare -and some would say for good reason- factory light green.  Mauro Baroni took this picture!
