Market 218: Nice original Giulia SS at auction

Giulia SS 10121*381349. On June 6th in Greenwich CT Bonhams will hold an auction and among the lots is Lot 437, one 1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint Speciale with a claimed 33,000 miles on the odometer and a fairly clean, original appearance. Estimate is $40,000 – $60,000, which ranges from realistic to slightly optimistic but not out of the question.

This is a good looking car. Door gaps are invisible, ride height is perfect, bright work and paint are very nice. I’d lose that front license plate in a hurry.

Two years with Giuliettas: The State of the Union

It’s hard to believe it’s been two years since I started giuliettas.com. It’s mostly been a lot of fun-to-do yet challenging work and I’ve had my productivity issues, my ups and downs of mood, funds and time, but through it all I have kept my momentum, mainly through the encouragement of the friends I’ve made through comments and emails… they get me through the days when I wonder what I am bothering to do this for. I renewed my domain name, paid to have it link to the site and am due to renew my Flickr pro account next week, so rest assured, you will be able to enjoy another year of giuliettas.com.

Market 196: Nicely preserved TI in Italy

Giulietta TI 10129*220464. This car is available right now on eBay.it. Condition is superbly original and the color combination is spectacular. At 11,500 Euros or about $15,500 it is at the top of the market for these cars, but I think you’ll agree it deserves it once you look carefully at the pictures. Car is listed as being in Caltagirone -must be near Padua judging by the plates.

Great color! Trim and hood fit is great. Everything has a nice even patina. Too bad it’s $2000 worth of transport away.

Market 119: Cheap Giulietta Spider Racer

Update 10/20/09: 28 bidders resulted in a seling price of $13,500. This is very low for this car. A competitive 1300 engine alone is close to $10K to build. I wish I wasn’t paring down myself or I would have jumped in! Another Giulietta heads for Germany.

Update 10/14/09: This car is back on eBay. Previous buyer and now seller has a pretty comprehensive description and you now know exactly what you are getting. If nothing else, the auction is worth a visit to see some vintage pictures of it in action. I wonder what has been done to the engine? Cams? Big valves? Look for a solid end price this time.

Looks like fun. These cars look good with no grill trims at all.

It’s hard to put a price on proven track time. This car seems to have it. I want a race car!

Giulietta Spider Race Car 10103 1495*11341. This car was on eBay briefly last week and ended BUY IT NOW on 5/22/09 for $12,000. Someone got an amazing deal or ripped off and I suspect the latter. If you know this car drop me a line.

Market 133: Baby Blue Spider Normale

Update 7/24/09: Sold for $15,530 after 37 bids were placed. If this car is as good or better than it looks this was well bought.

Giulietta Spider 10103 1495*09766. This Spider is on eBay right now out of Novato California, just north of San Francisco. It wears Washington license plates so it hasn’t been in the area long. I say baby blue rather than Celeste since it looks a little less sky and more boys baby blanket to my eyes.

There is no hood strip but the little 4 inch hood strip continuation piece is still between the hood hinges. I like the no grill eyebrows look and will probably go for this look with my Spider. Bumper overriders or ‘tusks’ are missing. All things considered, the car looks good. Note the poodle in the passenger seat. Dog smell is included at no extra charge.

Market 132: Maybe the nicest 1600 Sprint I’ve seen

Giulia Sprint 10112*353213. This car is currently on eBay out of Belmont California. It still wears it’s original black plates and looks to be a well cared for original rather than a restored car. I like! Notice also that it’s serial number is one before this car, another San Francisco Bay Area Sprint. Opening bid is at the desired sale price of $27,000.

Trim looks great and fits very well. The paint seems to be shiney and it just looks right.

Market 123: Barn Find late Spider Veloce

Update 6/17/09: “The seller ended this listing early to sell to the high bidder(s) at current bid price.” 50 bids, $25,300 and the seller ended early to sell to the current high bidder. I guess eBay has figured out that there was no way they could keep this from happening so they have embraced the off auction sale. $25k for this car is about right in my opinion.

Giulia Spider Veloce 10118*390214, engine 00121*01727. This car is available out of Southern California on eBay and includes the rare Pininfarina factory steel hardtop. Auction description is lengthy and included at the end. Seller states the car is a 1965 and no doubt that is what the title says, but d&T and Fusi both indicate it was manufactured in 1964.

This is how you find them and when you are very lucky you are the first one to find them and get a very good deal. I don’t think I would do much to this car at this point, just make it safe and clean. By the shape of the ovals in the wheels these are Borrani’s. There late Veloce’s seem to always have these wheels.

Market 99: Two-tone Giulia SS project

Update 3/31/09: Auction ended at $32,299 with 32 bids. This is strong money and reaffirms that SS’s are sought after right now. If the new owner is happy with the cosmetic condition and drops it off at a shop to be made to run and drive they will probabkly be $50K into it when they take their first test drive. They will be pushing $60K if they decide the two-tone paint needs to be rectified. The DIY home mechanic could probably see this on the road for about $40K out of pocket. The white SS that was on eBay recently is looking better when all this is considered.

Update 3/29/09: A kind reader took some pictures when he went to see it in person. He reported that it needs more work than he thought it would before seeing it and that the paint was not as good as it looks in the pictures. Still, this is one of the better SS projects to show up in a while. Spy shots here.
Giulia Sprint Speciale 10121*381357, no engine number stated, but said to be original. Available right now on eBay out of La Habra Ca is this 1965 SS. Seller says it’s a 1966 but it was (according to Fusi and d&T) made in 1965, the year production ceased at car number 381399. The two tone treatment is reminiscent in my opinion to that seen on some Lotus Elites. Some assembly required.

This is a great angle for SS’s. I like the two-tone treatment, but would consider painting the roof to match the body color.

Today I’m 101 200 603 72,434

The careful reader will know that the 101 is for the number of Market reports I’ve written. I suppose the same reader could guess that 200 is the total number of posts I’ve written for this blog. 603 is the most page views I’ve had in a day, there is no average to be seen, but I would guess around 275. 72,434 is my total visitors, doubtful if they are unique.

What good have I done? Not sure. I’ve been tempted to write a market wrap up but that sounds like a lot of work, maybe at the end of a year. I have this crazy idea that I could develop a Giulietta value calulator based on actual sale prices now that I have a pretty good catalog of auction results. I’ve gotten a lot of work done on my Sprint, enjoyed the daily commute company of a fine Berlina and gathered a lot of good parts for my SS project. Through all these I’ve had you here to keep me honest and on track. Thanks!

Market 98: Nicest early Sprint I’ve seen

Giulietta Sprint 750B 1493*01149, Engine 1315*01110 (I think). This car is one of the earlier Sprints I’ve seen come up for sale and is available now on Anamera for 50,000 Pounds Sterling. This car is well known to Alfa enthusiasts in Europe, having been displayed in shows and driven on events there by the seller. A friend who owns several Sprints (early, late, veloce etc) said he wouldn’t hesistate to lay out the cash if he could afford it. He says that this car is as good in person as the pictures and has been warmed up so that it really goes.
