Market 175: Sprint rebodied by Zagato in Belgium

Update 1/2/10: I changed the location to Belgium as corrected by several readers. I knew making obvious mistakes would get some of you to comment!
Giulietta Sprint 750B 1493*04045. This Zagato rebodied Sprint is for sale in Belgium as an SVZ, no price is stated. I list it as a 750B because d’Amico and Tabucchi do not list 04045 as a Veloce and my SVZ book does not list this chassis as having been rebodied by Zagato ‘back in the day’. What does this mean? Not a lot actually. In the first place several period Zagato modified cars are not Veloce’s, in two cases not even Sprints, but rather Spiders. Second, if you spend 4 hours and read through the whole of the “complete SVZ file” on the Alfa BB you will see that (in addition to a lot of confusion) there are a lot of Zagato bodied Alfa’s in race photographs from the late 50’s that are not identified as any particular chassis number. This leads to the third point, if there are a bunch of unknown cars wearing Zagato bodies, couldn’t you just find a Sprint, rebody it in the style of an SVZ and pass it off? This question leads to the fourth point. Even if it was made yesterday it is not easy or cheap to fake an SVZ and if a legitimate coachbuilder today undertook the transformation of a car to the specification of an SVZ it would be very expensive. How expensive? I don’t really know. You tell me. The last point is: most of the original, known, accepted, documented and indisputable SVZ’s don’t wear their ‘back in the day’ body, so even if a somewhat modern recreation -how different would this car really be? Again, your thoughts please oh wise and comment prone reader.

When you look at a car like this you take in little details like the absence of side marker lights, the sliding windows, the shape of the rear quarter windows, the fit of the windshield etc and then go to your history book and try and figure out if any of the blurry black and whites are this car in action. Good times. Oh, and thanks Elmar for the heads up on this one.

Sprint market review 2009

Just starting this review has me thinking about my Sprint. It’s sitting dusty and undriven for weeks in my carport. I love driving it, looking at it, just thinking about it I want to go out and find an excuse to take it for a cruise -lack of heater (my fault) and all. This fondness for my own example has me thinking about these cars in general. The Sprint is in a lot of ways the first of a breed and easily underestimated at ‘Normale’ specification. The price you can buy a good Sprint for these days is still very reasonable and if you get one you can use you will know the fondness of which I speak. Anyway, to the point, here are the Sprint’s you could have bought in 2009 in order of increasing price.

Market 75 was Sprint 10105 1493 22515, which failed to sell on eBay for $2551 -buy it now was $5400. This car sold about a year before for $310 out of Florida!

Market 122: 63 Sprint, some assembly required

Update 2009/12/08: I received an email from Bob in Vancouver who bought this car and it sounds like it is in good hands, already seeing a hotted up 2 liter with transmission enroute from the builder and the shell due back from the painters by the end of the year.  It’s good to see a car like this find the right home.

Update 2009/07/14: After another go on eBay this car ended reserve not met at $4050 with 18 bids.  Not sure what it will take to sell it but hopefully the seller will keep improving it.  Lot’s more pictures of trim were added and it looks to be fairly complete.

Update 2009/06/16: Reserve not met at $5111 after 8 bidders stepped up.  I was thinking that, with a running 1600 installed and almost everything needed to complete it on hand, this car would reach at least $8000.  If it were me I would run another auction with an inventory of included parts and better finished product pictures.  I think it would see this car sold.

Giulia Sprint 10112*353214. This car is available right now on eBay out of Scotts Valley California, in the Santa Cruz mountains. Not too many of these later Sprints show up for sale, and when they do they are usually a mess. This car seems to buck that trend though it has some issues of its own to address. The ‘buy it now’ price is quite optimistic unless that paint is really nice and the parts included are in very good shape, but as the seller points out, it is easy to be $12,000 into a project like this and be at this point or not quite at his point yet. Anyone interested is advised to go and have a look.

Sprint 353212You have to admit that the paint looks good here, as do the grills. Hood shut lines are excellent. I wonder if the hood is bolted in or just sitting on top? Note door in the background.

Market 167: nice late model 1600 Sprint

Update 12/2/09: Oops, jeez, I published this initially saying $16,600, was $19,600, 22 bidders no sale. I wouldn’t have sold it either. Kind of strange that 22 bidders would have no questions -at least none worth responding to in public. Relisted of course… Min bid/BIN/make offer $27,500. Honestly about right.

Giulia Sprint 1600 10112*353231. This car is on eBay right now out of New England. Originally a red car but repainted in one of the various takes on celeste that Alfa used throughout the years with names like cloud blue and ice blue. A wise move in my opinion. If you look in the catagories section to the right of where you are reading you will see a link to ‘Sprint Normale’s’ and under that ‘Giulia 1600’. If you select that link you will see that very few of these late cars have been on the market that I’ve known about in the almost two years I’ve been keeping track.

This picture has a remarkable resemblance to the first picture in Market 132. I really dig the way the shape of the car is emphasized by light colors such as this. Grills, bumper, lights, hubcaps, you name it, it all looks great.

Market 144: Naked 750 Sprint project

Update 9/15/09: 24 bids resulted in a selling price of $15,100.  This seems like a lot of money but is not surprising since this car has very little rust, is Mille Miglia elligible (1957 production or before) and runs as it is.   Well sold and if Sprints finally follow a heirarchy similar to 356’s in their valuation breakdown based on age and speciffication, I suspect it will have been well bought.

Giulietta Sprint 750B 1493*04813, 1315*04310.  This car is on eBay right now out of Newport Beach from the same seller who has brought us a lot of decent Sprint projects and frankly, has set the standard for great presentation.  I don’t know where the paint went, but its absence definitely allows for a warts and all view of the car and it looks very good.

frontclose2There is some lead in the nose, but it looks pretty straight.  Headlight rings, grill and bumper fit well enough.  One marker light is broken and the eyebrows are missing.

Market 140: Some Rough Sprints

These Giulietta Sprints are part of that group of cars stashed away by the owner of a car dealership in Kaufdorf.  The Swiss government has ordered the site cleaned up so the cars are being auctioned.  These Sprints range from massive projects to seemingly ‘ran when parked’ cars.  The Europeans seem to enjoy a good challenge, so maybe some if not all will be bought and put back on the road.  I wouldn’t be surprised if they all go to one buyer, like Joop Stolze, for reasonable money.

pa_06big11988This guy lost part of his nose ot cancer a long time ago.  Plenty of good parts here or ambitious project.

Market 132: Maybe the nicest 1600 Sprint I’ve seen

Giulia Sprint 10112*353213.  This car is currently on eBay out of Belmont California.  It still wears it’s original black plates and looks to be a well cared for original rather than a restored car.  I like!  Notice also that it’s serial number is one before this car, another San Francisco Bay Area Sprint.  Opening bid is at the desired sale price of $27,000.

!BW)uP,!B2k~$(KGrHgoH-DQEjlLlt51ZBKZ!mkIzdQ~~_1Trim looks great and fits very well.  The paint seems to be shiney and it just looks right.

Market 130: Bertone Giulietta prototype?

Giulietta 10591 prototype.  This car is available right now out of Finland.  It is said to have been made by Bertone but the styling cues seem to me to be a little later than 1959 though (1969?)  I do see a Sprint under there if a squint just a bit.  Anyone know the story here?  Sellers story is below.  Oh, and it’s 40K Euro’s.

Looks a bit like this modified car.  Kind of approaches something sort of Opel or??

Market #37: “Alpha Romeo Giulietta Sprint Voloce”

Update: 6/3/09. 20 bids, $11,311 the high bid with reserve not met.  I am willing to bet this is less than the current owner paid for the car, pity since it sounds like it is in perfectly usable shape.  If it were me I’d go down to the local auto paint shop, get rid of the yellow and buy some grills for it.  I doubt there is one bidder who is not subtracting at least $1500 from their max based on doing these things.  Other than that maybe add all the badges and get some Sprint seats.

Update: 5/28/09. 21533 is back on eBay after having found an owner to attend to its needs making it roadworthy, as presentable as possible, and who could write an auction description that actually tells something about the car.

21533 noseI’m still at odds with the blacked out grills and yellow mask, but over-all this is an attractive car. Current owner has done a good job preparing it for a profit making resale.

Market 117: Modified for serious fun Sprint

Giulietta Sprint 1493*21163. This car is available now on eBay and BringaTrailer out of Northern California. It has been modified to perform at an amazing level for track and event use, but retains it’s trim and charm. $35,000 is the price of entry.

1960_Alfa_Romeo_Giulietta_Sprint_Vintage_Race_Car_For_Sale_FrontI like the Panasports, I like the blacked out grills, the fit and finish are to a high standard. These Vitaloni mirrors are out of place but fill the holes and do the job nicely.
