Market 116: 58 Spider Veloce project shell

Update 6/16/09: The auction ended at $4000 with 11 bidders.  I think it has been established that this is a $4000 car!

Update 6/10/09: This car is back on eBay from the same seller as the subject of Market 95, and the same seller who listed it in May. It still looks like a good start for a Spider Veloce restoration. I wonder how much money is spent moving cars from small time dealer to small time dealer? I imagine when this car finally finds a home intesested in it as a project rather than a money maker, there will have been a $1500 ‘transport’ tax applied.

Update 5/14/09: 23 bids resulted in a sale price of $4010. Probably about right if the floors and sills are as rotten as stated.

Update: Well, more of a please note, the absence of a Veloce engine complete with about $4000 worth of intake components etc is is a high hurdle to overcome where this car is concerned and as Veloces get more expensive, so will these components.

Giulietta Spider Veloce 1495*05164. This car is available now on eBay out of Stanton California, one of the little town between Long Beach and Orange in Southern California. It looks decent in the pictures but the description says it’s rusty in the sills but no pictures are presented of the rust so assume the worst.

!BSGMIKQ!mk~$(KGrHgoH-DYEjlLl4)iEBKBdGzmB7w~~_1Looks like a pretty good nose compared to the usual mess these cars end up in. Bumpers aren’t bad as cores and it’s even a good color under all the layers.

Market 112: 2 Spider projects a Veloce project in Italy and a Normale project in Australia

Update 5/13/09: No bids either car.  Oh well…

Giulietta Spider 750F 1495*07515, 1315*31998. This car is available right now on Italian eBay with an opening bid of €14,000 ($18,300 at time of writing). The Telaio number dates it as a 1959 so the vent windows are most likely correct and it may be a short wheel base car (passo corto). I’m still trying to work out when the vent windows came into production. I think they were always available as an accessory.

This car is rough looking but fairly straight and comes with a lot of the hard to find parts. Amazing that these cars keep turning up!

bqycswcgkkgrhgoh-cwejlllghbj65gho4g_1Doesn’t look much better or worse than my Spider but has the magic ‘F’ of the Veloce stamped on it and a Veloce Series engine.

Market #91: Early Spider Veloce project

Update 5/2: This car ended at $22,224 with an amazing 42 bids.  This seems a little low for such an original and complete running early  Spider Veloce, but times are still tight.  Reserve was not met, so barring an off-eBay sale look for it to be back on the market.

Update 4/27: This car is back up for sale, this time on eBay. I’m not sure if it’s a spiff-up and resell or something more along the lines of what happens to me when I buy a good deal and then two months later realize I shouldn’t have spent the money, good deal or no and I have to resell.

86a8_3Car looks a little better here with both grills and everything shined up a bit.

Market 97: Very nice 750F Spider Veloce

Update 3/24/09: Auction ended at $49,999 with 43 bids.  This is about what I thought it would do.  Apparently the economic rollercoaster isn’t confusing buyers of fine cars that are likely to appreciate or at least hold their value.  I wonder where this car will go?  Germany?  Belgium?  Japan?  Dubai?  Berkeley?  I hope the latter.

Giulietta Spider Veloce 1495F04358, Engine 1315*31402. This car is on eBay right now out of Santa Clara Ca. These early 750 Spider Veloce’s are the Spider to get if you can find one and as always, if you can find a nice original it’s the one to get, if not, get a no excuses restored car like this.

bowniqmkkgrhgookjgejllmyuwjbjumv2e2ow_3I don’t usually have black come to mind when I think of a Giulietta Spider, but I have seen a lot of local cars in black over the last few years and I think going forward I will always think of them in black.

Market #78: Spider Veloce shell

4 bids, $1000 selling price… not bad!

Giulietta Spider AR167162 with an F.  EBay is an endless source of entertainment and todays entertainment is provided by this Spider shell, on offer right now from a California based supplier of Alfa interior components.  The front is tore-up and it looks horrible, but if it is indeed a Veloce, some one will be scrambling to save it or at least moth-ball it away for when the economy turns around.  If I was at this moment restoring a similar Normale the price difference between Normales and Veloces (about $20K) is such that it would almost make sense to get this body, blast/repair/paint it then assemble the Normale bits on to it and then swap Veloce parts onto it as they become available.  Selling the Normale body to someone with a rusty car would probably pay for a good bit of the swap project.

217191907_oOuch and Ewww and scarry but doable.  Presence of suspension and steering  components is a bonus.  How does this happen?

Market #73: Best color combo Spider Veloce

Update: Bidding ended at $24,100.  Solid money for this car in a depressed market.  Hopefully some of its originality can be maintained.

Giulietta Spider Veloce 750F 1495*04644, engine 1315*31682. This car is available on eBay right now. d’Amico and Tabucchi list this car as a 1958 model.  These don’t come up often in this nearly-a-runner barn find condition. They are usually very challenging projects or restored. The rare intake components are listed as included but there are no pictures so one would want to see their condition before diving in too deep.

bc86_3Another car that makes me wonder ‘who would let this happen to a car like this?’ This is actually pretty early for a Spider Veloce and arguably the best color combo. I would guess rust on the hood is the result of a tarp trapping moisture against it.

Market #57: New Delhi $50K ’59 Spider Veloce

Update:  If you scroll down to the comments you will find a comment by the owner of this car.  This auction is a scam, no doubt about it.  Makes me wonder a few things…  What possible gain is there in running this scam auction?  I don’t think there are very many buyers interested in this car who exist in a vaccuum as it were, who would buy without telling any other Alfa owners or asking around for verification that it is a Veloce, correctly set up etc.

I also wonder about eBay.  Granted, everyone knows they have postured themselves with policies to support high volume sellers of crap that bulk up search results but add little of value to the discerning buyer, probably to increase traffic and there-by perceived company value (and stock price), at the expense of the little guy who is in reality selling the thing that most people go to eBay for.  I used to frequently sell on eBay to help pay for my hobby but between eBay fees and Paypal gouging policies I have all but given up.  Search on Alfa Romeo, I bet the items you express interest in are sold by low volume individuals, the very people eBay policy is the least sympathetic to.  On top of this is the fraud auction problem.  There should be an internal listing review audit that sees an auction like this with high buy it now price, little information given and a no-feedback seller that goes through a verification process before the auction goes live.  This sort of auction makes ebay look bad.

It’s time for a dedicated auction site for classic cars and car parts for and by the little guys.  I have some ideas if your interested in going for it.

Currently on eBay is this 1959 Giulietta Spider Veloce.  Entire text of ad reads as follows:

“Alfa Romeo 1959 Giulietta Spider, very rare car only 2800 made ever.  Only serious buyers contact.  Scammers do not bother to contact.  Car in excellent condition.  Not driven in over a year now.  Serious buyers contact for further details.  Will have to meet in person for completing the deal.  Thanks for looking.”

3814_1Doesn’t look too bad, but then again, with picture resolution like this is could be one of those high quality scale models coming out of Italy now.

Market #50: Al Leake’s 57 Monoposto Spider race car

Update 2/11/09: This car just showed up on Anamera advertising that it will be auctioned by RM.  They are looking for $125,000.

95a9ec9425How much mark up does a detailing add?  Someone is going to find out!

213965f39dThis is one sweet ride.  Knowing me, if it were mine I’d commute in it.

Ex-Al Leake 1957 Giulietta Spider ‘Monoposto’ 1495*02646, Engine 00106*00512. This is a pretty serious purpose-built race car and it is available right now from Fantasy Junction. Click on the link if for no other reason than to look at the 50 or so pictures provided. No price is stated but Sophia, his most often raced Giulietta Spider made about $75,000 on eBay last winter so you can bet that this car will be at least that much.

Al Leake along with some other guys including H.B. Luginbuhl had an SCCA race team that started in the late 60’s/early 70’s called Rubber Chicken racing. Al continued to race and build Alfa’s for many years until he lost a battle with cancer earlier this year. A little of his history and cars can be read here on the Alfa BB. I saw Al race a few times at Sears Point and Laguna Seca and I can personally attest that he was very very fast and that this car is capable of winning against seemingly faster and more nimble cars if well driven.

It’s refreshing to see a modern era vintage race car that is both fiercely competitive and tastefully presented. I like the contrasting white wheels and cut down windscreen. A lot of Giulietta Spider race cars lose the under door trims, eyebrow trims and even grill heart. If you are fast this eight pounds of jewelry isn’t going to keep you from winning.

Market #33: Giulietta Spider… Veloce?… Veloce!

Reserve not met! Auction ended the second time around at $9100, I guess the repeated listing curse has struck.  I imagine the seller will regroup, make some small changes to the car then relist it in a few months when the general public has forgotten about it.

Relisted: The car is back on ebay due to a non-paying high bidder. The seller has added to the description a scan of a response from the Alfa Romeo Archive stating without caveat that the car is a Giulietta Spider Veloce. Will a relist with solid documentation take this auction higher than the first selling price or will the eBay repeated listing low-price curse strike? I anticipate the former. Veloces are special and with a little, ok, well, a lot of work this car will be fantastic.

Update: Car sold for $14,100 which is at the lower end of my speculation, but considering the expense of getting a 750 Veloce engine together this is probably a good price. As always, we’ll see if the sale sticks. I am thinking Sprints might be more popular than Spiders right now based on recent eBay results.

Giulietta Spider 10125 1495*(F)10203, Engine 1315*44059 (not original). This car is available now on eBay, another neat Giulietta project from the seller in Newport Beach who sold several of the Sprints I have written about. This car is being sold as a Veloce and has several physical characteristics of a Veloce but based on the numbers there is some legitimate doubt as to whether it is truly a Veloce.

There are a lot of VERY enthusiastic Alfa people out there whose primary interest and first love are Giulietta Spider’s, especially Veloce’s, and if you are seriously considering this car and looking for guidance, you may want to check out the AlfaBB (link is to a discussion of this car) or join the 750/101 Yahoo group to track some of them down and get their opinions.

This Spider almost looks like a wax and go in this picture. Dent in the nose is not too bad and it doesn’t seem to have affected the trim which all looks pretty good. I like the baby blue.
