750 and 101 series cars 1954 – 1965
Giulia Spider 1600 101.23 AR373862. This car was on eBay ended at $15,776 with 20 bidders on 12/20/08. I imagine (or at least hope) it’s under the knife right now. I think this was a decent deal considering everyting is sorted except the accident damage. Values seen to have come down a little since then so I expect this would make maybe $13,000 now.
It’s like two-face from what was it Batman? Looks like it was a nice car.
Update 2/11/09: Seller says it’s all one color but that engine compartment sure looks white to me.
Giulia Spider 1600 101.23 AR375698, engine 00112*08251. This car is available right now on eBay out of Southern California and not much different than the subject of Market #84 other than a claimed (with marginal photo evidence) absence of rust, fresher paint and a sobering $33,500 asking price.
So far so good. Trim is excellent and I like the color of the car. Blacked out grill openings are pretty cool. Note wet driveway and remember cars look better when wet.

Giulia Spider 101.23 AR379860. This car is available right now on eBay, buy it now for $16,500, from a classic car dealer in southern California who offers your typical mix of not-very-exciting (at least to me) late British and German roadsters. No engine number is stated but I am going to guess that if it’s original its about 00112*18000.
This is how you used to find them all the time. A little bump in the nose, trim and bumpers in B to B+ condition with good enough fit for a driver, paint with some bald patches and, well ,you get the picture.

Giulietta Spider 750D 1495*02549, engine 1315*42308. This Spider project is available now on eBay. From the description I am not sure exactly what you get besides the body, block and license plate w/title. Seller contacted the Alfa archive and received this response:
“According to our documentation files, the chassis number AR 1495.02549 and the engine number AR 1315.42308 originally correspond to an Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider, Manufactured on the 9th of August 1957 and sold on the 18th September 1957 to Hoffman Motor Car Co. New York, USA. The body colour is red.”
It’s a Spider, that’s for sure. Is that bondo around the nose? Sweet.

1/30/09 update: If eBay closed stats be believed, this car sold with 1 bid for $40,000. What do you think, any intrepid readers care to comment?
Giulietta Spider 750D 1495*04904, Engine 1315*44211. This car is on eBay right now out of Waltham Ma. Car is said to have had a comprehensive rebuild but the paint and trim is original. Starting bid is $39,900 reserve not met and the car has a $42,500 buy it now price. This car will appeal to a certain kind of buyer, like me, who likes to use their old cars and prefers originality at the expense of a few warts, but unfortunately this kind of buyer tends to be a little tight fisted when it comes to buying cars and the asking price of this car is about what could be expected for a concours winning restored example.
This is a no nonsense car, with clean lines and presentable trim. Black with red interior is among the better color combinations for these cars. I like the early cars like this that don’t have vent windows.
Update 1/12/10: It’s funny to go back and look at these old Market reports. Funny in this case because I go on about the wheel baase of this car but now know that 08607 would be a LWB car. Oh well, you learn and have to admit mistakes…
Giulia Spider. For sale on bay area Craigslist. No real information given. $56,900 asking. Umm, yeah.
Ad text states it’s a 59 but I don’t think this style hood happened until late 61 or even 62 so I’m not sure what to say without the correct VIN to check. They say the vin is 000014908607 if I dare extrapolate I could guess 1495*08607, which is a 1960 Spider Normale, but that number series should be for an early style car with short wheel base, flat hood and early style gauges. Hood and gauges can be changed but a measure of the wheel base would tell the whole story.
Nice car for sure. I mean really nice car. Perfect. Of course a shiny red car at dusk always looks good. One would have to inspect…
Update: This car ended at $2175, reserve not met. I don’t see a note that the auction ended early, but I seem to remember it being more than this when I wrote about it. Is the market this soft so suddenly?
Giulia Spider 10123 AR375922, Engine Tipo 00112 included (at least it sounds like it). This car is available on eBay right now out of Torrington CT. Fusi lists this car as a 1963 Giulia Spider Normale. Seller sold it previously on eBay but Eurpoean buyer backed out so it is on the market again. Buy it Now price of $8000 includes some new parts not offered as part of the auction including piston set, clutch and carb kits. I didn’t see what the first auction ended at, post a comment if you know.
The seller of this car has listed many parts over the last year that I have watched and considered bidding on so I have no doubt they know their way around Alfas. The tirade about non-paying bidder is carried a little too far, but having been in that position I know it is easy to loose ones composure in that situation.Â
Looks like fun, a body on a dolly surrounded by crusty parts. The nose looks pretty good but with the parts in such a jumble I find it hard to accept the claim of 100% complete without subsantiation.
Update 2/10/09: This car has been on eBay, Hemmings and anywhere else the seller could think of. Most recently it ended on eBay for $18,500 reserve not met with 32 bids. The interest is there, but the seller wants too much.
Update 12/4: This car is back on eBay. No new photos are included and the text of the auction is the same and there is a reserve. I suspect this auction will end about like the last time. Juan: if you’re going to relist as car that everyone has already seen a bunch of times you HAVE to change the auction or list it with no reserve!
Update 11/25: This car is now listed here with an asking price of $33,500 and on Hemmings for $31,500. I still think this is a $25,000 car at most and with the economy as it is, that may even be high.
Reserve not Met! Bidding reached $21,100 with reserve not met and the car has been relisted. Let’s see if this car can break the relist jinx.
Giulia Spider AR*375944. This car is available right now on eBay out of Roswell Georgia with a buy it now price of $33,000.  Fusi indicates this car is a 1963 year model and should have an engine Tipo 00112* and a  number ~08000. Seller states that it is a one owner car with 55,000 miles. Paint if it is original is spectacular, but I doubt it is. This blue, renamed may times over the years in Alfa’s catalogs, is what I usually call Celeste blue, Italian for Heavenly or Sky blue.
Brightwork fit on this nose is very good, except the missing trims that go around the upper edges of the grill openings. The mount holes for these can clearly be seen here. I would think for $33k the seller could spring for a set since they are not usually expensive.Â

Update: Sold! Car closed with 28 bids, the high of which was $12,205. A little higher than I thought it would go for, but given how original everything on the car is I am not really surprised.Â
1962 Giulia Spider 101.03 AR370257, Engine 00102*30583.  On eBay now! Seller claims the car is a 1963 Giulietta 1300 Spider Normale, though according to the numbers Fusi indicates it’s a 1962 Giulia Spider. Engine listed is a 1300 from a 1961 Sprint or Spider. This car is firmly in the gray area known as interim cars. It has the large Giulia type tail lights, earlier Giulietta gauges and no fake hood vent. My knowledge of Spiders is limited so if any of you cares to chime in with a comment, please do.
The nose of this car is very nice, no real body work is required to make it straight. Giulia’s usually have the fake vent on the hood, maybe this isn’t the original hood, or maybe the first year Giulias didn’t have the fake vent.

Sold! 33 bids and an ending price of $8700. Almost exactly what I sold mine for a few years back. If it can be brought to life and put on the road without much fuss then a very good buy.
Giulia Spider AR10123*373944, Engine 00112*04458. Available now on eBay is this 1962 Spider. Seller says it doesn’t run but rolls and steers fine.  Rust is reported to be limited to the shelf behind the seats and the hood edges. From the pictures it appears this car has the 3 shoe drum brake set-up and a later split case 5-speed. No mileage is stated but these cars seem to accrue about 80 – 100,000 before they are taken off the road for lack of some small repair only to turn up as barn finds 20 years later.
I owned a 1962 Spider very similar to this car. It was a single carb 1600 with a split case 5 speed and 3 shoe drum brakes (you can read about it here). It had similar patina but no rust. The engine looked about the same and with a little coaxing came to life easily enough.
Originally white, now red, with over-spray all over the place. Looks like a straight forward honest car, not quite a wax and go, but almost. All the trim is in place and there are no obvious problems.
