Market #57: New Delhi $50K ’59 Spider Veloce

Update:  If you scroll down to the comments you will find a comment by the owner of this car.  This auction is a scam, no doubt about it.  Makes me wonder a few things…  What possible gain is there in running this scam auction?  I don’t think there are very many buyers interested in this car who exist in a vaccuum as it were, who would buy without telling any other Alfa owners or asking around for verification that it is a Veloce, correctly set up etc.

I also wonder about eBay.  Granted, everyone knows they have postured themselves with policies to support high volume sellers of crap that bulk up search results but add little of value to the discerning buyer, probably to increase traffic and there-by perceived company value (and stock price), at the expense of the little guy who is in reality selling the thing that most people go to eBay for.  I used to frequently sell on eBay to help pay for my hobby but between eBay fees and Paypal gouging policies I have all but given up.  Search on Alfa Romeo, I bet the items you express interest in are sold by low volume individuals, the very people eBay policy is the least sympathetic to.  On top of this is the fraud auction problem.  There should be an internal listing review audit that sees an auction like this with high buy it now price, little information given and a no-feedback seller that goes through a verification process before the auction goes live.  This sort of auction makes ebay look bad.

It’s time for a dedicated auction site for classic cars and car parts for and by the little guys.  I have some ideas if your interested in going for it.

Currently on eBay is this 1959 Giulietta Spider Veloce.  Entire text of ad reads as follows:

“Alfa Romeo 1959 Giulietta Spider, very rare car only 2800 made ever.  Only serious buyers contact.  Scammers do not bother to contact.  Car in excellent condition.  Not driven in over a year now.  Serious buyers contact for further details.  Will have to meet in person for completing the deal.  Thanks for looking.”

3814_1Doesn’t look too bad, but then again, with picture resolution like this is could be one of those high quality scale models coming out of Italy now.

Market #56: British ‘Style et luxe’ Giulia SS

Giulia SS AR10121*380784, Engine 00121*00722. This car is available here now for 44,321 Euro’s, which at todays exchange rate is $57,387 (would have been $70,000 a few weeks ago!). Elmar sent me the link to this fine specimen which is described thus:

“1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia 1600 Sprint Speciale with coachwork by Bertone. 1965. Rare RHD. Rosso with black hide. In the current ownership since 1979, this is a well known car having multiple concours awards to its credit as well as having been the subject of a number of magazine articles. The car also featured in last year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ display. Very rarely found in this condition. Please telephone or e-mail for fuller details.”

Nice Nice Nice, especially after the Project featured a few posts ago. I’m not even going to try and critique this.

Market #55: one owner baby blue Giulia Spider

Update 2/10/09:  This car has been on eBay, Hemmings and anywhere else the seller could think of.  Most recently it ended on eBay for $18,500 reserve not met with 32 bids.  The interest is there, but the seller wants too much.

Update 12/4:  This car is back on eBay.  No new photos are included and the text of the auction is the same and there is a reserve.  I suspect this auction will end about like the last time.  Juan: if you’re going to relist as car that everyone has already seen a bunch of times you HAVE to change the auction or list it with no reserve!

Update 11/25:  This car is now listed here with an asking price of $33,500 and on Hemmings for $31,500.  I still think this is a $25,000 car at most and with the economy as it is, that may even be high.

Reserve not Met!  Bidding reached $21,100 with reserve not met and the car has been relisted.  Let’s see if this car can break the relist jinx.

Giulia Spider AR*375944.  This car is available right now on eBay out of Roswell Georgia with a buy it now price of $33,000.  Fusi indicates this car is a 1963 year model and should have an engine Tipo 00112* and a  number ~08000.  Seller states that it is a one owner car with 55,000 miles.  Paint if it is original is spectacular, but I doubt it is.  This blue, renamed may times over the years in Alfa’s catalogs, is what I usually call Celeste blue, Italian for Heavenly or Sky blue.

Brightwork fit on this nose is very good, except the missing trims that go around the upper edges of the grill openings.  The mount holes for these can clearly be seen here.  I would think for $33k the seller could spring for a set since they are not usually expensive.

Market #54: Luzzago Giulietta Sprint Speciale auction 11/15

Giulietta Sprint Speciale 10120*00687, engine 00129*29819 (not original). This car is going to be auctioned 11/15/08 at the Luzzago in Italy. The engine is from a Giulietta TI which seems funny, but once the original is gone, almost any 101 1300 can serve as a basis to build an 00120 spec veloce engine, you just have to verify what was done. I really like the look of the car, lowered and with all extra trim removed. I’m not crazy about the white wheels and some of the interior treatments, but that’s all easy enough to deal with.

Paint looks great, note there is little reflection distortion across body lines. Home-made grill is simple but effective.

Market #53: Late 1600 Giulietta Sprint

Update 1/5/09:  This car is still available and the seller is looking to get about $25,000 for it.

Giulia Sprint 1600 AR357309. This car is available right now on eBay and bidding is currently $18,000 Fusi says this is a 1963 Giulia Sprint 1600, no engine number is stated but it was originally a Tipo 00112 probably about 08000. Bertone number is probably about 6530000.

I’ve seen this car before on the AlfaBB and the seller seems to have a handle on what these cars are about so I am confident this is a car that is as good as it looks.

These late Sprints are neat because they have the classic Bertone Giulietta Sprint shape combined with the updated components being phased in with the Giulia Sprint Speciale, Giulia Sprint Veloce (step-nose GTV) and Giulia TI.

Market #51: 1964 Sprint rally/race car

Our friends over at bring a trailer have this car on offer from a collection in Southern California.  If it’s a 1964 it’s probably a Giulia 1600 Sprint.  The car is reported to have been a French market car which means it probably had a few oddities like a glass brake fluid bottle when it was new.  Alfa and Renault had a deal worked out that reduced the import tax on Alfa’s and allowed Alfa to make Dauphines and R4’s in Italy.  I’ll explore this relationship in a later post.

This car looks like a pretty straight, lightly modified, used but not abused car that would clean up nicely and make a great driver.  Asking price is $30,000 which seems optimistic, but a trip to Orange County may find this car to be better than it appears and it probably has excellent provenance from its time on the track.

The absence of the egg-crate grills on this car makes it look tough.  I’d put some Cibie Oscars on either side of the grill heart.  All the visible trim and shut lines look good.  I like the orangy-red and would look forward to cleaning and polishing this car if I bought it.

giuliettas dot com turns 100!

147 days ago I started this Giuliettas.com blog.  Why?  I guess there was no real central location for auction news (with selling price and pictures), historical musings and small personal mechanical struggles with Giuliettas.  No one-stop-shop if you will.  Now that I have been at it a while I have to ask myself: What have I done?  I’ve created a small, usually quiet readership who send me a nudge whenever a few days goes by and I haven’t put up a new post.  I appreciate the comments, no matter how brief or off topic and market alert emails (Paul and Ian come first to mind) they keep me going when I wonder what the point is and help a lot when I don’t have the time to search on my own for cars.  I thought this blog would just be a lunchtime meditiation to help me avoid all of the horrible Silicon Valley California fast food lunch invites and fill gaps between work projects.  It has done these and much more, I’ve even made some friends along the way.

SS going fast in the dirt back when the world was a simpler place to live.

Market #50: Al Leake’s 57 Monoposto Spider race car

Update 2/11/09: This car just showed up on Anamera advertising that it will be auctioned by RM.  They are looking for $125,000.

95a9ec9425How much mark up does a detailing add?  Someone is going to find out!

213965f39dThis is one sweet ride.  Knowing me, if it were mine I’d commute in it.

Ex-Al Leake 1957 Giulietta Spider ‘Monoposto’ 1495*02646, Engine 00106*00512. This is a pretty serious purpose-built race car and it is available right now from Fantasy Junction. Click on the link if for no other reason than to look at the 50 or so pictures provided. No price is stated but Sophia, his most often raced Giulietta Spider made about $75,000 on eBay last winter so you can bet that this car will be at least that much.

Al Leake along with some other guys including H.B. Luginbuhl had an SCCA race team that started in the late 60’s/early 70’s called Rubber Chicken racing. Al continued to race and build Alfa’s for many years until he lost a battle with cancer earlier this year. A little of his history and cars can be read here on the Alfa BB. I saw Al race a few times at Sears Point and Laguna Seca and I can personally attest that he was very very fast and that this car is capable of winning against seemingly faster and more nimble cars if well driven.

It’s refreshing to see a modern era vintage race car that is both fiercely competitive and tastefully presented. I like the contrasting white wheels and cut down windscreen. A lot of Giulietta Spider race cars lose the under door trims, eyebrow trims and even grill heart. If you are fast this eight pounds of jewelry isn’t going to keep you from winning.

Market #48: 2L 57 Sprint revisited

Sold!  $23,102 is the winning bid after 16 bids.  I think this is the best price this car has acheived yet.  Will its reign of terror end or will we be seeing it again on eBay?  Time will tell.

Giulietta Sprint 750B 1493*04891 with 105 2 liter engine ‘AbNormale‘.  This car has been for sale since before I bought my first Sprint a couple of years ago and can presently be found on eBay.  I featured this car and another by the same seller in Market 26 and it doesn’t look like much has changed with this car.

You have to admit this car photographs well.  It’s straight, the trim is all present and it has a slightly agressive look to the way it sits.  Smaller 6 inch headlights are neat feature of these early Sprints.

Market #47: Restored Austrian Giulia SS

This 1964 Giulia SS is available here and here out of Austria.  I seem to remeber this car from somewhere else, but haven’t had time to go through my files to see.  No price is listed on Anamera and price is listed as inquire on the sellers website so it’s a safe bet they want top dollar for the car, maybe 50K Euro’s?

Very nice backdrop for a photo set.  Greens in the background really bring out the lustrous red body.  I don’t see anything wrong here.  That’s quite a billboard they put out front.
