Market 521: SVA 750E 02159 in Germany

Giulietta Sprint Veloce 750E 1493*02159, 1315*30114, *77*101*.  This car is available now out of Germany.  Price is available on request which means it’s expensive, and the seller knows what they are selling.  This car is said to have been restored in the late 1980’s in Italy with Maurizio Tabucchi (yes, the same guy who co-authored the book I quote in almost every post) giving input on originality, and / or perhaps even owning it for some time.

It’s important to realize that this is not *just* a Veloce.  It’s a Veloce when Veloce actually meant something really really (really) special – they were made to race, not give buyers a performance option they would seldom tap.  SVA’s are generally regarded as somewhat homologous through their 600 – 610 unit production, but really the evolution that resulted in the SV Confortevole started after perhaps 200 cars being produced.  Magnesium became aluminum etc.  It would be interesting to see a scholarly work analyzing car to car changes, but at this point the cars are all largely restored to the capricious tastes of rich owners, and even in the cars youth, parts were swapped around feverishly in pursuit of Targa Florio mountain climb advantages etc.  The parts book is thorough to a fault in a general way, but with the Veloce’s it just couldn’t capture the nuance of car to car production.  Even a car like this which appears to be very original, likely hides some liberties taken for performance or expedience when it was restored.

Yes, I am saying I really like this car.

This color -typically called Francia (French) Blue, seems to be quite popular for the Sprint Veloce Alleggerita – especially the early ones for some reason.  d’Amico and Tabucchi list available colors for these as: Alfa Red, Gardenia White, Iseo Blue and Black – not sure why Francia blue is not included.  Headlight trims, grill eyebrows, bumpers and other assorted trim were in aluminum on these cars, as were the hood, doors and trunk.  Overall weight savings from these and other changes was around 110 kg.

Market 49: Splotchy 101 Sprint project in Florida

October 29 2015: This car has come back on the market after a bit of a hibernation and a healthy coat of rattle can primer.  Interesting to read my comments from 2008 and think about how the market has moved since.  It probably changed hands for just under $10,000 back then, and now it’s already at $14,200 with 31 bids and just under 3 days to go.  Amazing how things change.

Looks like a nicer starting point today than it did 7 years ago.  Also noteworthy is that this is a 10102, not a 10105, so it, has metric gauges and was originally probably meant for Italy -though it may have been a Mexico or Venezuela bound car.  Anyone know if Mexico or Venezuela cars have Italian language gauge inserts?

October 10 2008: I’m sure at least one of you out there were wondering what the seller wants for this car.  Well wonder no longer, this car is available now on Hemmings website.  Asking price is $11,900.  Are we in a financial crisis or not?  More pictures can be seen on Picasa (unless like me your employer blocks Picasa access for some reason).  What do I think?  For $11,900 this car should run, drive, stop and not make you worry about when you last had a Tetanus shot.  Subtract the cost to make it so and you are back to a $5500 car.  It is a free country though so be prepared to see this car on the market for a while.

September 22 2008:  Reserve not met! Bidding ended at $5950 with 15 bids placed.  I bet the seller wanted $6000 and is trying to make a deal with the high bidder.  Relists always fall flat and this is pretty good money for this car.

Giulietta Sprint 10102 1493*20205, engine 1315*010311.  Here is a reportedly rust free 101 Sprint Project that is currently on eBay out of Florida.  I would want to verify the rust free claim with pictures as Florida has a climate that promotes rust.  Car wears new tires which is a plus at least as far as rolling it around while working on it is concerned and if they are of good quality your $300 ahead of the game.  Everything on the outside is still bolted in place though it’s tough to tell for sure from the pictures it all looks reasonably straight.

You can assume the ‘blush’ on the front of this car hides surface rust of the sort seen on the drivers door.  I like the fender-forward mounted mirrors (maybe a Japanese market car?) and the trim looks good.  If you are bidding, assume it will all need rechroming.

Market 323: Black Plate Sprint project 10105*21083

Update October 5 2015: Incase you spent the last 4 years wishing you had bought this car – well, you get another chance.  It’s back on eBay.  Looks to have been improved a bit, but still has a ways to go.

Paint is looking pretty good these days.  Grill is still from an early 750B or Spider.  Good luck adding a front bumper if that’s something you would care about.

Update September 5 2011: Wow, $25,800 is pretty serious for this car.  Ummm, maybe I should stop driving mine every day?  Nah.

Giulietta Sprint 10105 1493*21083.  This car is on eBay right now out of Temecula in southern California.  Car wears its original California black plate but none of the originality usually associate with a black plate car.  A lot of difficult to source trim is missing, engine is incorrect, interior is mostly wrong components with incorrect finish among other things.  It runs and drives (yay) but will require a lot to be original.  Would make a great beginning for a CSRG or other vintage racing group car.  Looks nice though.

Don’t get me wrong, it is a nice looking example.  Sprints are good cars, this example would bring a smile to your face every time you drove it.  I don’t mind the lack of badges, bumpers or hubcaps, but the trim that runs along the top of the rockers is necessary to the shape.

Market 507: 1957 Spider Veloce 750F*01970 at Fantasy Junction

Update October 2 2015:  I took the day off work to do some really fun stuff like go to a Dr. appointment and get my daily VW oil changed and smogged, and I was rolling by FJ and thought – hey, why not, and stopped in.  I gotta say, this car is REALLY nice in person.  Spencer told me it looks like it’s probably sold, but like Indiana Jones, in the opening of Raiders of the Lost Ark, you could probably swoop in and grab your hat before the door gets all the way down.  Commendable restoration for sure.

If you licked it, it might taste like cherry or watermelon jolly rancher candy.

Giulietta Spider Veloce 750F 1495*01970, 1315*32969.  This car is available from Fantasy Junction in Emeryville Ca for $145,000.  I get asked most often if I know of any 1957 Spider Veloce’s for sale – well, here is one!  Car looks very well restored, though I’m sure there is one or two of you right now seething at some incorrect minutiae.  The engine number is not in the correct range (1315*30267 – 30761) for this year car, but as I commented* on my “What year…” post (see below), Veloce engines blew up and were replaced.  This old post has a discussion of what it may mean.  The restorer did us a favor and stamped a new build plate with the number for the engine in the car – that won’t cause any confusion in 50 years.

Looking good – has that wet lollipop sheen that somehow triggers heightened desire.  I have worked on a lot of these cars, I can tell you it is an astonishing amount of work to get to this point from a bare shell in need of rust repair (not saying this needed rust repair – just that its a ton of work to get a car together from a shell to yum).

Market 514: Sprint 750B 00356 in Indonesia

Giulietta Sprint 750B 1493*00356.  Listed on Anamera out of Indonesia.  I thought I saw this car out of US east coast on eBay at one point.  Maybe the eBay seller was really in Indonesia?  It’s early and it’s rough, but it is not hopeless…

a17d405b06

If it was local I’d go have a look for sure.  Looks to have been well used, but left too long in the rain.  Should have the short windshield?

Market 512: Minty early Sprint 750B 00977 in Italy

Giulietta 750B 1493*00977, 1315*01023, Body 65970.  Yesterday I was really excited about Sprint 00656, today I am, if possible, more excited about Sprint 00977 available form the same seller.  I’m more of a green guy than a red guy, and this car just looks right to me.  I realize it probably has some originality deficiencies that someone with more authority than me will point out, but thats okay, I’d take it just as it is.  I have seen 3 sub-1000 Sprints come on the market in the last few weeks, must be a virus that’s going around.

Anyone near enough to go verify the body number and give us a test drive or in-person review?

That is a great car in a great color.  I wonder how original it was before the restoration?  Looks to have rolled lip rims still.  Even has the neat little turn signal lights and jack point covers.

Market 511: Sprint 750B 00656 in Italy

Giulietta Sprint 750B 1493*00656, 1315*00648, Body 65650.  Available now out of Italy from Aquarama boats and cars.  Their site is under construction, I found it on Anamera.  This is one of the neatest (in my opinion) cars I’ve had the pleasure to write about in a long time.  If circumstances were different I’d be emailing Italy all excited, ready to hop on a plane.  Early Sprints seldom come up for sale, and when they do, they tend to be in a pretty rough state.  This car looks ready to go.

I have only seen a handful of Giuliettas on offer over the years that included period pictures.  Super cool!  Sill trim below the door is missing. Continue reading “Market 511: Sprint 750B 00656 in Italy”

Market 431: Sprint 750B 06395 -much assembly required

Update October 1 2015: Available now from Joop Stolze.

Giulietta Sprint 750B 493*06395, 1315*05812 & 00112*15344.  This car appears to be offered by ReOriginal’s on eBay out of Livingston TX.  Car is very much where the project I am currently working on is -lots to do!  Paint is 10 years old but shines, interior work looks pretty good and it comes with an extra engine.  No mention is made whether all the trim etc comes with the car.  This is a rare car in that it’s one of the last 750B Normale’s -the last 200 750 ‘eyebrow’ grill Sprints were Veloce’s.

But do the original parts include bumper, ‘eyebrow’ grills, headlights with rings, hood center strip and front center grill?  Looks pretty nice here.  You can buy those bumper bracket trim bits new from several vendors.

Market 463: SS 10120 00379 -nice since new

Update September 30 2015: Symbolic has listed this car again.  Interesting that it has failed to find a permanent (on the human scale) home. Asking price is now $189,000.  I wonder if the seller from 2013 just decided to hang on to it.

00379

Sex sells no?  I know, we’ll ad $60,000 to the price and take a picture with a dame.

Update April 20 2013: This car was listed on Anamera for $129,000 so I guess that must have been the sale price.

Screen Shot 2013-04-20 at 8.53.32 PM

Expect it to sell then be auctioned this summer.

Update March 4 2013: I changed the text a bit as it’s not a Giulietta in the period photo.  Still a cool shot though.

Giulietta Sprint Speciale 10117/10120*00379, 00120*00769.  This very nice example was at some point listed by Symbolic Motors -it’s on a photo aggregation page and credited to them. If anyone has more info I’d love to hear more about this car.

This car circa 1961?  Can’t be… it’s a Giulia.

Market 505: Spider 750D 03800 on BaT Auctions

Spider 750D 1495*03800, 1315*43557.  This Spider sold September 16th 2015 via a BringaTrailer (BaT) auction for $58,800.  If I read their rules right, seller will see $58,550 of this – not too bad!  Buyer pays 5%, up to a max of $5000 to BaT, making this a $61,700 purchase.  Auction has no fixed end time -as long as there is a  bid within 3 minutes of the last bid after the end date/time, it keeps going, and there is no fixed bid value increment – you can beat the last guy by a penny!  Pretty cool.

Capture

Handsome car this.  Ready to be used and hopefully enjoyed.
