Glas 1700 GT: Tour de Glas

You’re reading this with a bit of interest and a bit of eye-rolling, after all this is giuliettas.com, not glasgt.com, but hey, it’s really mattsvehicularinterest.com, so humor me. I’ll inevitably talk about Sprint’s since they tend to be my frame of reference.

I was cruising the bits and bytes and found FCB Free Car Brochures.  The have a lot of good brochures scanned at VERY high resolution, including some Giulietta’s and Glas’s (awkward plural -anyone?).  I was thinking that most of you are probably like me, and have only ever seen a Glas GT at the point in the story where mine is -at the end of act one, just before act two begins or might begin, in other words, as a derelict disassembled depressing heap.  Well, this post is meant to take you back, to the beginning of act one, where the virgin is still a virgin, the dog hasn’t run away, and the crops are still growing.  From the top: Welcome to the all-new 1963 Glas 1300 GT!

This is the first picture in the 1963 brochure and represents what would have been many peoples first glimpse of the new GT based on the 1300 sedan.  Sexy car, sexy color, sexy girl not included.  Note the 1300GT doesn’t have a hood scoop.  Alfa wasn’t the only one to add a ‘decorative’ hood scoop to give their slightly larger engine a little head-room.  Like the Alfa 1600, the Glas 1700 was given a longer stroke.

Glas 1700 GT: Ate clutch slave

The hardest part of fixing up a car with very little support is the odd model-specific OEM part.   The Glas GT has just such a part in its clutch slave cylinder, an Ate item.  My car came with one -a bit of good luck if you will, but it was VERY frozen and just generally not an encouraging prospect for clutching.  Jaan was confident it would come apart and sure enough, it did.

The thing about hydraulic pressure is, it doesn’t really take no for an answer, so long as the question has enough pressure to force the recalcitrant part to answer.  In this case I cleaned it, we applied serious cutting-torch type heat, and then we hooked it up to a 2 ton bottle jack.  We let it sit at about 100 PSI over night and the next morning, a little pump on the jack saw the cylinder pop out.

Market 353: Spider Veloce project 03317 in Italy

Giulietta Spider 750F 1495*03317, 1315*30772 (missing), 1315*45283 (now).  Wow, I just spent 15 minutes looking to see if I wrote about this car before -time to organize my files!!  This car is available now from Ghibli Auto Classiche e Sportive in Italy.  Conditon is not so good, but it’s a Veloce and it’s in the land where all the spare parts seem to be headed.

Looking so-so.  Parts are present.  I want to start an ‘as found’ movement, where you get a car like this, make it work, and use it looking like this.  Would be fun and boost Tetanus shot sales.

Market 352: Gorgeous Sprint 385833 in Italy

Giulietta Sprint 1300 10102*385833.  This car is available now from Luzzago in Roncadella, Brescia.  Color combo on this one is one of my favorites, the condition is very good, and the asking price is 25,000 Euro -about $32,500 at the time of writing.  This car is one of the last few Giulietta’s made -production ending at 386000.

I see this blue on a lot of 2600 Sprints, 105 GT’s, TI’s and Supers.  I might have to paint the Glas this color.  This all looks impeccable.

Difficult to find part for sale: Giulietta Spider seat tracks

Update:  Laurence comment below is correct, Afra sells these as a set for 744.15 Euro’s before shipping.  You can subtract 21% VAT if you’re not in a VAT country -which for the US is about $765.

For sale:  Full set of Giulietta/Giulia Spider seat tracks in excellent condition.  $500 obo (free insured shipping to contiguous US at this price).  Those of you who have never looked for a set of these seat tracks are no doubt looking at my asking price skeptically, but if you have looked for a full set, including the bottoms, you are probably thinking ‘eh, that’s about right’.  If you need these and moneys tight -send me an email and convince me why you should get them for a really good deal.  I’m a sucker for a hard luck case.  I’m always up for trading too and have a long wish list!

Other than some slight surface rust they are nice.  Knobs are smooth -no splitting, springs and catches are tight.

Market 351: Sprint 350182 in Holland

Giulietta Sprint 10102*350182. This car is listed on Anamera and is available now out of the Netherlands.  It is described as a good runner/driver that needs some detail work to make it perfect.  Price is 19,500 Euro’s, a little less than $25,500 at the time of writing.

Car was imported from the USA in 1992 and repainted then.  Looks pretty good.  Suspension is a little high in the front.  Wears original white Carello turn signal lenses.

Glas 1700 GT: rebuilding the fuel pump

Update: I made a little Glas GT dedicated page above -check it out!

The Glas GT has a Weir type fuel system similar to the Porsche 911’s.  Two single throttle-body Solex carbs are fed from a remote float chamber.  Fuel pressure is maintained by a pair of mechanical fuel pumps operating off the same shaft.  I haven’t worked out the fuel path yet but it looks like one pump keeps the float bowl fed from the gas tank, and the other pumps fuel to the carbs.

The finished product -well, almost, I still need to make some paper gaskets and get some little copper crush washers.  Filter chamber covers have been plated and polished, screws just plated.  Very nice!

Market 349: Driver Spider 370837

Giulietta Spider 10103*370837.  This car is available now from DriverSource in Texas.  It wears an aging red respray, has some loose ends to tidy and is said to run and drive well.  Ask is $34,900 -on the high side for a car with a dash this scruffy -but who knows…

Looks amazing here -but who wouldn’t with that backdrop.  Front rim is a Borrani, rear is a Fergat.

Market 95: 1600 Spider project in Carlsbad

Update 12/17/11:  I’m still a little skeptical, but this car seems to have surfaced as a restored example in France for 32,000 Euro or $41,600.  I’ve compared pictures and the drivers side mirror, gauges and shift knob look the same between both.  What do you think?  If it sold for $12,000, cost $2000 to get it to Europe, that leaves $27,000 to fix it up and try and make money over 18 months.  If all it needed was rust repair, a respray and some catalog parts, maybe they’ll make money.  I suppose it really begs the question of corners cut.

Lots of pictures to compare here.

No visual cues yet that it’s the same car.

Same wood shifter knob and yellowed tri-gauge.  Neither is a rare thing.  Interior looks okay -seat covers are wrong.

Other than being a lot cleaner, it could be the same engine compartment.  Same radiator cap?

Update 11/11/09:  This car has turned up at Steuel in the Netherlands.  Price is not 11,500 Euro ($17,200 while the dollar lasts as the semi-universal currency).  Let’s see, $1000 to get it across the water, add a few thou’ to it and the makings of a living can be seen.  I’m surprised the hardtop wasn’t removed and sold separately.img1022Giulia Spider 375838 finds itself in a new country with a new language to learn and in the hands of people who have seen way worse rust.

Update 6/16/09: Amazing what can happen on eBay. This car ended at $12,200 with 22 bidders this time around. That is almost double what it reached last time with the same amount of bidders. Maybe someone really wanted the hard top!  This car is in many ways not as nice as my car that I am asking $4000.  I guess it’s time to put it on eBay.

Update 6/8/09: Apparently not sold, this car is once again on eBay though the seller has a different ID, not sure what that is about. Current bid is higher than the previous selling price and it’s only been on half a day. Seller has another Spider project, earlier, not as complete and a Veloce, that was listed at the same time. I think I would space the listings out if it were me, but there seems to be no shortage of Spider projects so it probably wouldn’t help.

Sorry about the lack of postings, I’ve been busy with other stuff and WordPress has been taking a LONG time to do/load anything so I get frustrated. Must be the large amount of stuff I have saved on their site.

Update 3/19/09: Car sold for $6250 with 22 bids. Probably well bought when everything is considered, especially the hard top.

Giulia Spider 1600 101.23 AR375858, Engine AR00502*15806 (Sprint GT). This little gem available on eBay right now out of Carlsbad California (near San Diego) re enforces the notion that ‘it’s always something’. Here we see a promising start with a complete car wearing very straight trim, a factory hard top, California Black Plates and a Sprint GT engine. While the engine is not original, with these ‘regular’ Spiders it doesn’t really matter so long as it runs. The something? This car is pretty rusty where it matters.

182f_3I could see just making this thing run and drive and then using it rusty bumpers (or no bumpers) and all. From this picture it looks like Carello’s chrome is longer lasting than Alfas and the grill eyebrows make me think it all should be stainless.
