Dads 1947 Chevy 3100 part 4"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite having a full plate I managed to get up to my dads place a few weeks ago and got most of the engine back together for the Chevy truck.\u00a0 In the last installment we cleaned up the pistons, inspected the rod bearings and got everything ready for reassembly.\u00a0 My dad thought we would be lucky to get the pistons back in the bores -he was pleasantly surprised by how much got done.\u00a0 I think I will fall back on working on old vehicles for a living if my business endeavors don&#8217;t pan out.<br \/>\n<a 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><strong>I was working along and realized I wasn&#8217;t taking any pictures so I got my iPhone out and took a few.\u00a0 We used the same ring compressor I use on Alfa engines to install the pistons, the same Redline assembly lube on the bearings and the same can of WD40 to wet the rings.\u00a0 Connecting rod caps and bolts are as expected.\u00a0 The main worry here is that the little &#8216;scoops&#8217; in the sheetmetal parts that go over the connecting rod caps are oriented correctly so the turning of the crank forces oil into the scoop.<\/strong><br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/11\/img_0982.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9480 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><strong>There was a preferred orientation for the installation -BDC.\u00a0 Couldn&#8217;t get my fingers around the connecting rod journal to orient the bolt if it was anywhere else.\u00a0 Oil pan gasket is a 4 piece affair that&#8217;s a real PITA to install.<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/11\/img_0983.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9481 size-full\" title=\"IMG_0983\" 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><strong>The little scoops on the connecting rod ends grab oil out of these troughs.\u00a0 Oil is pumped into the troughs.\u00a0 A weird system.\u00a0 Later engines had the oil pump directly to the big ends.\u00a0 Lots of people told me to go with the later engine but this is the original, and it did 50 years of uncomplaining service.\u00a0 <\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/11\/img_0984.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9482 size-full\" title=\"IMG_0984\" 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><strong>Oil pan is held on my a bunch of slotted screws.\u00a0 I scratched my head, shrugged, ignored the torque spec for these and just made them tight.\u00a0 I think 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><strong>Here&#8217;s the &#8216;new&#8217; transmission.\u00a0 Early <em>Advanced<\/em> 47 &#8216;s had a 4 speed w\/granny first, floor shift, straight-cut gear transmission that was similar to the older model and similar to the later column shift model, but not the same as either -so it was a big deal finding this &#8216;box.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll be on grit removal and clean up detail before long I suspect.<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/11\/img_0987.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><strong>After we got the pistons all in and the big ends torqued, we took a break, had a pizza and some wine and were shooting the sh*t.\u00a0 I had about an hour-and-a-half before I had to head home so I said &#8216;hey- lets put the head on it too!&#8217;.\u00a0 20 minutes later we were doing the torque job on the head bolts.<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/11\/img_0989.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9486 size-full\" title=\"IMG_0989\" 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><strong>Do they call this a long block?\u00a0 I left instructions to install the tappets, push-rods and rocker assemblies<\/strong> <strong>before I came back up.\u00a0 I&#8217;m due for a return, maybe next week.\u00a0 Also would be nice to paint the engine with the can of original color engine paint we got.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nSo I have managed to help us along to this point.\u00a0 I think we have all the parts we need to complete the engine re-rebuild and installation.\u00a0 My dad called me on Monday of this week to ask if there was a gear puller somewhere in my tool box -he was trying to get the U-joint yoke off the drive shaft to see if he could figure out why it was frozen.\u00a0 Good to see he&#8217;s not waiting for me to do work on
