Fiat 124 Sedan Special Suspension Squeeks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The other day I drove the Fiat to work so Steph could drive the &#8216;luxury liner&#8217; as she calls the BMW 325 wagon on some errands after work.\u00a0 Every bump I hit caused a horrible knock\/bump sound from the front suspension.\u00a0 I crawled under the car and discovered that one of the sway bar mounting bolts had sheared and the silent bloc had made it&#8217;s way out of the mount so the bar was banging on the lower control arm.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/07\/img_6020.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-926\" Special sway bar mount is not nearly as complicated as the drop link arrangement found on the Giuliettas I&#8217;m used to.\u00a0 Here the silent block IS the mount.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><a the wheel off I noticed there was some play in the wheel bearing so I decided to repack them with grease and\u00a0tighten the securing\u00a0nut a little.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/08\/fiat-axle1.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-935\" src=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/08\/fiat-axle1.jpg?w=300&#038;resize=300%2C224\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rufushamilton.com\/giuliettas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/fiat-axle1.jpg?w=922&amp;ssl=1 922w, \/><\/a><\/strong><strong>2 Bolts and the caliper is off, axle shaft is nice and clean.\u00a0 The old grease smelled like artichokes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/08\/fiat-wheel-bearings.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-936\" src=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/08\/fiat-wheel-bearings.jpg?w=300&#038;resize=300%2C224\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rufushamilton.com\/giuliettas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/fiat-wheel-bearings.jpg?w=922&amp;ssl=1 922w, \/><\/a><\/strong><strong>Bearings seals and associated hardware cleaned up nicely using a little gas followed by brake cleaner.\u00a0 I used air to chase any solvent out then repacked them with wheel bearing grease. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The unexpected wheel bearing work took about an hour and when I crimped an edge of the nut in to the axle groove I found I had turned the nut about 30 degrees tighter than it was before.\u00a0 I guess this is about a tenth of a millimeter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Returning to the problem of the broken sway bar mount,\u00a0it turns out\u00a0what was broken was a pressed in captive stud.\u00a0 I\u00a0was not excited to pull the lower control arm off the car to press in a new stud, and I wasn&#8217;t sure I could get a nut in the space between the control arm edge and spring so I decided to tap an M6 hole in what remained of the stud.\u00a0 Once the threads were tapped in the hole I moved the silent block back into position and screwed it down.\u00a0 Hopefully it will hold for a while.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2008\/08\/fiat-swaybar-fixed.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rufushamilton.com\/giuliettas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/fiat-swaybar-fixed.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a><\/strong><strong>The fixed sway bar mount.\u00a0 I had to resist the temptation to go nuts cleaning and detailing the suspension components.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The next thing the Fiat needs is new control arm bushings.\u00a0 I think I had better get the Berlina\/Sprint swap done before I go tearing apart another car!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The other day I
