The original owner, an airline pilot living in Belmont, California, cherished the car for 48 years before selling it in 2008 to Neil and Colleen Kelly, also of Belmont. The Kellys entrusted the restoration of this very original and rust-free car to one of the most noted Alfa restorers and experts, Bill Gillham, a past president of the Alfa Romeo Owners Club (AROC) and proprietor of Hooligan Racing, LLC, his Alfa-only restoration business in Jefferson, Oregon. The Giulietta was completely restored to a high and very correct level in his shop, while the original engine was rebuilt by Alfa factory-trained expert Dan Sommers of Veloce Motors in Gervais, Oregon. With instructions to make the Alfa a concours contender, as well as capable of delivering the maximum in driving enjoyment, the car was completed in August 2009. A week after delivery to Mr. and Mrs. Kelly, it delighted the crowd at its concours debut at Concorso Italiano in Monterey, California.
The consignor purchased the Alfa in May 2010 and brought it to his home on the East Coast, where it continued to triumph at concours events. Among the honors has been an Alfa Romeo Open Cars to1970 First Place prize at the New Hope Automobile Show in Pennsylvania and the capture of a coveted Certificato d’Oro, with 99.1 points awarded at the 2010 AROC National Convention in Frederick, Maryland. Points were deducted for minor electrical issues that have since been addressed and for two small modifications made during the restoration – the fitting of Weber DCOE carburetors in place of the original DCO3 units and tires one size larger had been fitted for better handling and comfort. As a note, the DCO3 carburetors and their manifold with which the Alfa was delivered in 1959 accompany the car. In addition, the comes with a tool kit and jack, owner’s manual in a leather cover and a new custom ‘plushweave’ car cover, as well as various spare and maintenance parts and the original radio.
Just a glance at this Giulietta will confirm that it is indeed a superb example, with a still-fresh restoration on a straight, rust-free California car. The work has been done to a standard which has been recognized at concours throughout the US and correctly mechanically sorted in order to provide optimal driving enjoyment for the owner.
The Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider is, for many, the quintessential small Italian sports car of the mid-century period, a car which redefined what could be expected of a moderately priced Spider and indeed Alfa Romeo itself. The Veloce version of the Giulietta is the ultimate expression of that model. With its dual carburetors, higher compression and increased horsepower over the standard Normale, this Spider Veloce should deliver the superb performance for which these Alfas are legendary. We hope the new owner continues to share this amazing car with the public, both at concours and driving events. In any situation, this Spider Veloce is sure to please.”

And here from the sellers own camera -the car on the stage.
It’s funny to have become the intersection for a lot of Giulietta lovers. I got emails letting me know about this cars imminent run through the auction and emails with pictures from the auction. Emails from the restorer, emails from the seller and probably eventually an email from the new owner. Keep it up folks -your participation in this blog helps me find the inspiration to keep my end of it up. Who knows -maybe someday I’ll make a buck from the countless hours I’ve spent, but more importantly I’ll have made some friends (and enemies if I speak the truth).

Giulietta Spider Veloce 1495*07600, 1315*32968.
