13: win-win rear end repair"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was nearly <a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.com\/2008\/05\/20\/bodywork-3-that-dent-in-the-corner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2 years ago that I started work <\/a>on this corner of the car -was the first body work I attempted.\u00a0 Back then I didn&#8217;t really know what to do about some of the problems I faced, but as with all things, I figured when it came time to make a decision, I would somehow know what to do.\u00a0 The bodywork was tweaked just enough in a crash, and rusted through in just enough places that getting it back to stock was going to be difficult.\u00a0\u00a0Now that I am welding and unafraid and have to deal with it,\u00a0I have decided to repair it by emulating the early lownose rearend -a much simpler design and hopefully easier to fabricate.\u00a0 Check it out.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/1_23passcornerdent.jpg\"><img \/><\/a><strong>A reminder of where I started and what I started with.\u00a0 Now that I have experience I can tell you the dent to the left of the tail lights, in the gentle curve of the Kamm tail area is a harder thing to deal with than the edge chop.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/tail-crop.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6562\" title=\"tail crop\" src=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/tail-crop.jpg?resize=299%2C190\" alt=\"\" width=\"299\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a><strong>What I&#8217;m talking about when I say the early Low-nose rear end.\u00a0 No knife edge pointing outward where the upper and lower panels meet, that a chrome bumper hides.\u00a0 No holes for said bumper and no cutouts in the edge to accomodate the hidden bodies of the license plate lights mounted in the bumper.\u00a0 I am going to make it look like this.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/d-side-tail-ligth-area.jpg\"><strong><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" \/><\/strong><\/a><strong>See that ridge sticking out about\u00a03mm from the edge that is smooth on the car above?\u00a0 That&#8217;s what I aim to remove.\u00a0 Also note the rust in this area below \/><\/a><strong>See that cutout?\u00a0 The body of the license plate light fits in there when the bumper is mounted and the wire goes through that little hole.\u00a0 Also of note is the bumper bracket mount hole at the very left edge of this picture.\u00a0 Gonna remove that too.\u00a0 What will the next\u00a0owner do if she wants a bumper?\u00a0 Not my probelm.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<a \/><\/a><strong>This area was all cussed up so I figured it would be a good place to start since I couldn&#8217;t really make it any worse.\u00a0 I cut the leading edge off and welded in some little filler strips.\u00a0 I ran out of Ar\/CO2 when I was doing this and you can see some really bad welds where I carried on before I realized what had happened.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/02\/new-edge-p-side.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6553\" \/><\/a><strong>This actually looks pretty good.\u00a0 The edge has been cut off, filler plates have been welded in and ground down.\u00a0 I think you get the idea now.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t even think \/><\/a><strong>As I said, this is much worse than dealing with the dent near the tail lights.\u00a0 I will probably be cutting a lot more out before I start welding new metal in.\u00a0 Notice I cut out the bumper mount already.\u00a0 Didn&#8217;t take much as the welds that held the tube in had rusted away.\u00a0 It just pulled out.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a believe me that it will be easier to make it smooth like an early car than repair all the details of how it was originally?\u00a0 It&#8217;s a win-win as far as I can see: easier and more
