4 and Engine 7: small progress"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With all these market summaries and Spiders to write about I&#8217;ve been neglecting to have my postings keep pace with my progress on the SS.\u00a0 This is not a total disaster because I really haven&#8217;t done anything momentus, just more plating and small jobs on the engine rebuild.<\/p>\n<p>Over the winter break I torqued the lower end and head all together so the engine is ready for final assembly, but the details of final assembly have taken some time, mainly due to a missing lock nut.\u00a0 Sorry for the quality of these pictures, they were taken on my phone because I didn&#8217;t have my camera.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/missing-part-engine.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6070\" title=\"missing part engine\" \/><\/a><strong>These lock nuts that go over the main nuts that you torque down are strange.\u00a0 They are sheetmetal and when you tighten them down they flex and distort, and I think the distortion creates a spring force that makes them not want to loosen.\u00a0After torquing the lower end I found the bag of them from when I took this engine\u00a0apart.\u00a0 I\u00a0was surprised to find only seven in the bag.\u00a0 I\u00a0must have lost one or maybe I used one on the Sprint engine rebuild last\u00a0winter and\u00a0just don&#8217;t remember.\u00a0\u00a0 Good news: I have extras, bad news: they are inside a completely assembled engine.<!--more--><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/blank-engine-open.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6073\" title=\"blank engine open\" \/><\/a><strong>This 101 1300 was in the Spider when I got it.\u00a0 Frozen, crappy looking and unnumbered.\u00a0 I hoped it had never been apart so I would have a valuable uncut 1300 crank and unshaved head.\u00a0 I was disappointed on the crank front (.010 under), still don&#8217;t know on the head front.\u00a0 Yes, as a matter of fact there is a lot of sludge in that oil pan.\u00a0 Need to clean it up and put\u00a0the pan assembly\u00a0on eBay.\u00a0 Once I removed the oil pan baffle I removed the little lock washer, cleaned it and assembled it into the 00121.\u00a0 Sweet, only\u00a0an hours extra work.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/img_0265.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6075\" title=\"lobo alfa fasteners\" src=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/img_0265.jpg?w=300&#038;resize=300%2C192\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rufushamilton.com\/giuliettas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/img_0265.jpg?w=906&amp;ssl=1 906w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rufushamilton.com\/giuliettas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/img_0265.jpg?resize=300%2C192&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rufushamilton.com\/giuliettas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/img_0265.jpg?resize=768%2C492&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><strong>Another by-product of taking that engine apart was getting all the oil pan screws I will need for my rebuild.\u00a0 These are all the original &#8216;LOBO&#8217; marked fasteners.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll clean and plate them before assembly.\u00a0 They should probably be black chromate finish but I&#8217;ll do them in zinc.\u00a0 That little bracket with two holes goes under the carb and acts as a washer and guide for the fuel drip hose on single carb cars.\u00a0 Neat.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/plated-lobo.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6074\" title=\"plated lobo\" src=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2010\/01\/plated-lobo.jpg?w=225&#038;resize=225%2C300\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><strong>Just for kicks I have been plating any extra original bolts I have for use later.\u00a0 These are also marked &#8216;LOBO&#8217; or &#8216;2 F&#8217; on the head.\u00a0 Someday at a car show I will not be deducted a point for using incorrect fasteners.\u00a0 I know this is unnecessary and will add time to my project, but I like doing it so oh well.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a \/><\/a><strong>New drawer in the storage cabinet for these bolts.\u00a0 At some point I will be assembling something and just grab what I need out of here and be on my way. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I know, I had two weeks off work and big plans to fill that time at the shop, but it was cold, I had a lot of holiday related family engagements and friends in town so I just didn&#8217;t get much done, maybe 4 hours total.\u00a0 I did get the pedal box rebuilt with replated fasteners and a new clutch pedal rubber bump stop and ready for assembly into the car along with some new suspension parts but that is a post for another day.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe I should go into the fastener restoration business.\u00a0 It&#8217;s kind of fun cleaning and plating them now that I&#8217;ve gotten pretty good at
