Update 4\/28\/14:\u00a0<\/strong>The owner of 04351 contacted me and reports that a\u00a0restoration was completed about 18 months ago and It is currently being enjoyed in the South West. \u00a0He intended to keep the car as original as possible, but after digging in it became apparent there was more to do than anticipated and it slid down the usual slippery slope towards a full, though sympathetic towards its original state restoration. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Update 4\/24\/14: \u00a0<\/strong>I am currently going through close to 1000 Alfa Romeo sale records, verifying them for publication on The Fuelist, and I came across this charming specimen among the raw data. \u00a0I remember watching it reach $50,000 after some last minute aggressive bidding, and thinking – “Wow, these\u00a0have hit the big time!” \u00a0Looking back from this moment, five years later, this car appears to have been very well bought. \u00a0Anyone here a proud owner? \u00a0Where is 04351 now??<\/p>\n

Update 12\/17\/09: <\/strong>With 19 questions asked including: “Could you tell me the reserve?” to which the reply was “…..yes.” and lots of “How much right now?’ variations,\u00a06 seller added description updates and 29 bids placed this car sold for $50,000 even.\u00a0 If this was an SS and it was in this condition it would be $30 – $35,000.<\/p>\n

This represents a change for the fortunes of the early\u00a0Giulietta Spider Veloce.\u00a0 Just last\u00a0Spring\u00a0near sibling 1495*04358 in nicely restored condition\u00a0sold for\u00a0$1 less than this, and last months $44,000 result for 1495*05063\u00a0are proof.\u00a0 Considering the numbers produced, \u00a0attrition and the percentage of survivors that\u00a0are no longer original matching numbers\u00a0cars, these originals can only go up in price.<\/p>\n

Giulietta Spider Veloce 1495*04351, 1315*31400.\u00a0 <\/strong>This car is on eBay right now <\/a>out of Michigan. d&T lists this car in mid-1958 production among a run of about a dozen sequencial Spider Veloces.\u00a0 This car reeks of patina and it would be a shame to undo the years by redoing everything, but classic cars have not yet, and may never catch up to ‘regular’ antiques like 19th century furniture where refinishing a piece destroys 90% of the value.\u00a0 There are obvious limits to this where vehicles are concerned, function being paramount, but a car like this deserves to be let show\u00a0its age.\u00a0 I guarantee that someday patina will be valued over refinish, because if for no other reason, it will be the rarest state.\u00a0 Repaint a deteriorated repaint?\u00a0 Tough call, would have to see in person.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Front is pretty nice for an unrestored car.\u00a0 All the trim is in good shape and the paint has a nice warm ‘I’ve been here for ages’ look.\u00a0 The seller indicates it needs paint because the paint on it is a lacquer repaint that is peeling.\u00a0 I like.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Okay, yeah, peeling for sure -but a full repaint?\u00a0 That licence light looks stangely like a Sprint underhood\/interior\u00a0light.\u00a0 This would all clean up fine.\u00a0 trunk fits good.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Tudor wash bottle -check.\u00a0 750 series engine (there’s a picture of the number I didn’t include here -shows 1315*31400) check.\u00a0 40 dco3’s?\u00a0 Err, sorry -you’ll have to spend that $3000 elsewhere.\u00a0 Intake parts?\u00a0 Err, another $1500 + you get to spend.\u00a0 The intake pieces you see here have value and are arguably better from a functional standpoint (not sure about foam dome air cleaners), but you know, if you spend $2000 putting 29″ chrome rims on your Escalade, you better have a big rhinestone encrusted badge about 10″ x\u00a0 14″ behind the front wheel but in front of the door jamb that says emphatically “29””.\u00a0 I digress though, this engine compartment looks great, and a well spent $4000 – $6000 would have you complaining about cold starts in no time.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Yeah, these guys, a set of 40DCOE2’s on a tapered manifold.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Hello, my name is…\u00a0 This is mounted on the underside of the hood and that hole you see below the\u00a0engine number is most likely from rubbing against something like a hose clamp.\u00a0 I will bet a T shirt the new owner will replace this with a new fancyshmancy repro, stamped in the wrong font and screwed down with stainless philips screws or better yet rivited.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Kind of a different view.\u00a0 More to touch up and clean, but still above average.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Carpet is not original -should have rubber mats under foot.\u00a0 Tunnel case transmission has been maintained.\u00a0 Steeringwheel is pretty cool and the original, also in good original shape is included.\u00a0 A little care and cleaning would see this looking good.\u00a0 New carpet is available but if it was me I’d put the word out and wait for pieces with similar patina to come up for sale.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Original?\u00a0 Who knows.\u00a0 Door jamb looks great.\u00a0 I see the correct seat track knob sticking out.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Battery looks small to me.\u00a0 You want to lift the mat and look under it here.\u00a0 I think there is some healthy overspray on the filler neck and associated rubber pieces here.\u00a0 More easy stuff to rectify.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Veloce oil pan?\u00a0 Check.\u00a0 Koni shocks?\u00a0 Check.\u00a0 Lots of stuff to clean?\u00a0 Check.\u00a0 At least the rebound strap is not broken as is so often the case with a car that has sat little used for a long time.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Near and dear to me -I spent 2 hours yesterday cleaning and carefully taking apart my SS 4.10 rear end.\u00a0 Not sure where they got that fuel pump.\u00a0 I see goo and surface rust -but hey, it is a 51 year old car -at least I don’t see the sky through a hole.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>This is all just dirty.\u00a0 A weekend spent with a pressure washer and wire brush followed by a week of drying in a controlled environment and another weekend with some good underbody products would have this looking stellar.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This car is likely to be expensive to the point of surprising the seller, who seems to think it’s valuable, but to not be sure to what extent.\u00a0 It will probably head to Europe for a quick and dirty blow over at the hands of a profit seeker, be sold for a reasonable profit to a wealthy German\u00a0who will rerestore it with neither the haste nor the lack of attention\u00a0to detail of the middle man and in the end it will be a really stellar example.<\/p>\n

Me?\u00a0 I’d just wax it and drive it\u00a0to work.\u00a0 You think I’m kidding, but wait and see what I do with the SS…<\/p>\n
