It rained like crazy on Tuesday and Wednesday and I had to use our modern car (BMW, aka: her car) to get to work, which leaves her asking a friend for a ride, because the Sprint doesn&#8217;t have working wipers, the GTV doesn&#8217;t have working wipers (or reg), the Fiat isn&#8217;t running, the SS is in a million\u00a0pieces\u00a0and, well, you get the idea.\u00a0 I promised that the\u00a0highest priority for me would be getting a car together to drive to work that\u00a0was appropriate for all weather.\u00a0 I&#8217;d rather not drive the Sprint in the rain anyway, so the GTV is the logical choice for this sort of daily duty.<\/p>\n<p>What I figured would be a blown fuse has morphed in to a full restoration project.\u00a0 Sigh.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/10\/cowl-cover.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" motor lives under this cowl.\u00a0 They say it&#8217;s a good idea to remove these occasionally to clear leaves out.\u00a0 I wonder what I&#8217;ll find?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a \/><\/a><strong>Kind of underwhelming.\u00a0 No squirrels, no rats, not even a spider.\u00a0 Wiper rack and motor are held in by 4 13mm bolts and come out as a unit.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/10\/leaves-in-cowl.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5088\" title=\"leaves in cowl\" src=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/10\/leaves-in-cowl.jpg?w=300&#038;resize=300%2C225\" alt=\"leaves in cowl\" \/><\/a><strong>No fauna, but plenty of decomposing flora.\u00a0 This little ecosystem is right over the cowl drain hole.\u00a0 In a good rain I bet this would fill\u00a0up and water would come in the hole the heater draws air through.\u00a0 Good thing I have a shop vac.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/10\/crud-under-wiper-motor.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" \/><\/a><strong>I used a skinny vaccuum extension and my hand to get as much out as I could.\u00a0 I think someone sprayed oil in here to keep it from rusting.\u00a0 There is no rust but it is very gross.\u00a0 Will clean extensively before reassembly.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/10\/wiper-motor-problem1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5091\" title=\"wiper motor problem\" \/><\/a><strong>Here&#8217;s the wiper problem, two disconnected wires.\u00a0 I think a 12 volt electric potential\u00a0needs to\u00a0exist between these and the chassis for the \u00a0wiper motor to function.\u00a0 Maybe I&#8217;m lucky and the motor itself is okay.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/10\/under-dash.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5089\" title=\"under dash\" can&#8217;t find those wires under the dash and I need to clean out the cowl drain hose so the easiest thing to do is just remove the dash and console.\u00a0 Here the console is already removed.\u00a0 \/><\/a><strong>I guess I might as well clean this thing up while it&#8217;s out.\u00a0 Polish gauges and ashtray,\u00a0sand and clear coat wood, clean switch contacts, buy a new shift boot and much for reference as anything else.\u00a0 That black tar covered insulation is nasty stuff!\u00a0 See that toggle switch in the upper left corner?\u00a0 The dash mounting bolt is behind it.\u00a0 There is also one on the passenger side, same location.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/10\/dash-coming-out.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5086\" title=\"dash coming out\" src=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/10\/dash-coming-out.jpg?w=300&#038;resize=300%2C225\" alt=\"dash coming out\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><strong>To remove the dash you have to remove the defroster vents from the top, then slide the vent hoses down on the inside to expose two mounting bolts.\u00a0 On either end there is\u00a0the mounting bolt mentioned earlier.\u00a0 No fun getting to any of these.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/10\/dash-out.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" so it goes!\u00a0 45 minutes and the depths of the dash have been laid bare.\u00a0 Heater and defroster ducts were all full of leaves.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve got hours of fun ahead of me in here.\u00a0 At least it&#8217;s better than the TI was&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Up next: tracing wires, cleaning, lubing and testing the wiper motor and rack, cleaning, lubing and testing the heater box and fan, and just general improvement.\u00a0 Might be a good time to pull up the carpet in the front corners and do some rust patching.\u00a0 Geez, I&#8217;m three steps away from a repaint.<br \/>\nI saw a really nice 69 GTV yesterday in Berkeley so I am enthusiastic about this car.
