Sporting some possible later 50’s period modifications like the Stainless exterior exhaust, air horns, and a nice interestingly period vinyl interior, the car was repainted, had the Borranis restored, and received a new top in the 90’s. The restorer swears there are numbers on the side vents that match the cars numbers, so those could be original. The car is titled as a 1951, although Anselmis book indicates it as a 1949 build car with delivery to the Rome Alfa Dealer. Is that headliner material or carbon fiber? Aircraft style controls above the rear view mirror seem to be here to stay. Must seem dark in there with a black headliner.

Okay, I know what you might be thinking, what’s the point of comparing two cars that are separated by 60 years just because they are both red and from the same manufacturer (you ‘it’s not an Alfa it’s a FIAT’ folks pipe down). The point is I think you can actually see a respect and even homage to the 6C in the 8C. A certain poise and panache pervades both cars and they would not be such strange garage fellows as you might think.

I mentioned investment quality and wisdom. Tough call here. Less than 100 8C’s will come to the US, about 500 worldwide, which means there will be a few cars on the market at any given time for years to come. Automotive journalists have derided the 8C as a mediocre supercar, I mean it ONLY has 450 Bhp and the rear end breaks loose a little too easily at 165 MPH in turn 4 on a rainy day commuting around the Nurburgring for Deiters liking. I’m sure I’d feel like the first man on the moon driving this thing to the grocery for a $4.99 bottle of wine. Oh yeah, investment, I think it will enjoy valuation like any other modern car of it’s ilk; it’ll go up initially as rich guys want to experience it, it’ll go down once they all tire of it and chase the next big thing and someday it will be worth more than it’s current retail sticker price -you just have to keep it up and perfect until then.

The 6C is a different story. Counting all variants it was made in similar numbers to the 8C but time and unforeseen events have definitely eaten into that total and 30% still existing would probably be optimistic. The SS specification and spectacular coachwork on this example puts this car among the top of it’s type. For my money it can only become more valuable. If this car goes down significantly chances are half the country will be in foreclosure and out of work so who would really care at that point, it’ll still be outperforming other sinking assets.

If you want a solid investment with exclusivity that you can occasionally use buy the 6C. If you want to look good while going really fast and don’t care about losing 20% on an investment in the short term if it was fun doing it, go for the 8C. It may sound odd, but if I was financially set enough to be considering either of these cars I’d probably go for the 8C.
