{"id":10642,"date":"2012-02-13T15:08:05","date_gmt":"2012-02-13T22:08:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/giuliettas.com\/?p=10642"},"modified":"2012-02-13T15:08:05","modified_gmt":"2012-02-13T22:08:05","slug":"market-384-sprint-veloce-zagato-149306184-at-auction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rufushamilton.com\/giuliettas\/2012\/02\/13\/market-384-sprint-veloce-zagato-149306184-at-auction\/","title":{"rendered":"Market 384: Sprint Veloce Zagato 1493*06184 at auction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Update 5\/30\/12:\u00a0<\/strong>Sold for 414,400 Euro&#8217;s, about $546,000!<\/p>\n<p><strong>2\/13\/12: Giulietta Sprint Veloce &#8216;Zagato&#8217; 750E 1493*<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/26218757@N06\/sets\/72157629307424141\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">06184<\/a>, 1315*30851.<\/strong>\u00a0 This very interesting SVZ is going to be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rmauctions.com\/FeatureCars.cfm?SaleCode=MC12&amp;CarID=r323&amp;fc=0#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">auctioned by RM in Monaco soon.<\/a>\u00a0 While most cars I write about are straight forward subjects, and anything I say should be taken as insightful mainly due to heavy exposure to the subject if nothing else, and as being typically off the cuff. \u00a0 A car like this demands careful consideration and wording.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 The genuine article -a Zagato re-bodied Sprint Veloce, that was re-bodied &#8216;back in the day&#8217; i.e. the late 1950&#8217;s, is a very valuable car.\u00a0 See <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alfabb.com\/bb\/forums\/limited-production-1960-1977\/34821-complete-svz-file-23.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this<\/a> thread on the AlfaBB for some lengthy but enjoyable reading on the subject.\u00a0 Interestingly, this car is listed as MIA since 1960.\u00a0 It&#8217;s important to note that there was no search party out looking for it -it just stayed under the radar since then.\u00a0 So, with a spirit of caution, I start, and will reserve my comments to &#8216;ooh&#8217;s and ahh&#8217;s&#8217; once more.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/02\/mc12_r323_01.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10643\" title=\"MC12_r323_01\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/02\/mc12_r323_01.jpg?resize=525%2C323\" width=\"525\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rufushamilton.com\/giuliettas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/mc12_r323_01.jpg?w=562&amp;ssl=1 562w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rufushamilton.com\/giuliettas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/mc12_r323_01.jpg?resize=300%2C185&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>That is one desire-able object!\u00a0 Note squared off wheel openings.\u00a0 Hood is a low as they could practically make it and still fit the engine.\u00a0 Color scheme is bold -red headlining is fantastic.\u00a0 Any significance to that license plate number? Wheels look to be period cast wheels -magnesium?\u00a0 This is pretty close to the top of the Giulietta food-chain.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/02\/mc12_r323_02.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10644\" title=\"MC12_r323_02\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/02\/mc12_r323_02.jpg?resize=525%2C323\" width=\"525\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/rufushamilton.com\/giuliettas\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/mc12_r323_02.jpg?w=562&amp;ssl=1 562w, \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>There is a reason these look a lot like the SZ -they were essentially the prototypes, but not really built as such.\u00a0 Alfa planned for the SS to be the range topping racer, but it consistently got beat by these rebodied creations by Zagato.\u00a0 Look how nicely they finished the transition from body to the underside of the car.\u00a0 Tail lights are early Sprint items.\u00a0 What&#8217;s that little round thing on the valence below the license plate?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/02\/mc12_r323_17.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10654\" title=\"MC12_r323_17\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/02\/mc12_r323_17.jpg?resize=525%2C323\" width=\"525\" height=\"323\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Interesting they bothered with a jack.\u00a0 Ah, the round thing I wondered about in the last picture is the trunk release button.\u00a0 Look at the aluminum edging they put on the lower edge of the trunk opening.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/02\/mc12_r323_16.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>These handles can be found on a lot of high-dollar cars.\u00a0 You push the button and a handle pops out.\u00a0 Tidy arrangement worth a tiny bit of drag coefficient savings.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/02\/mc12_r323_09.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Badge looks new.\u00a0 I would rather see a patina&#8217;d original here, just to give an air of history.<\/strong>\u00a0<strong> Even their badge was \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Did they just take a regular grill and wrap it around something?\u00a0 Finish on those grill surrounds is nice -very nice.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/02\/mc12_r323_18.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10655\" title=\"MC12_r323_18\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/02\/mc12_r323_18.jpg?resize=525%2C323\" width=\"525\" height=\"323\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>I think these are the real deal period wheels that are now impossible to find unless they come on a car.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Zagato really had an artistry about how they did things -these seats being a good example.\u00a0 Could you make a neater looking seat and yet have it be lightweight and providing ample support for racing efforts?\u00a0 Door pulls look like Fiat 600 items.\u00a0 Dash looks lovely.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/giuliettas.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/02\/mc12_r323_08.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10649\" careful attention to finish detail up here.\u00a0 Would be nice to see the actual vin and engine stampings.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a the time frivolities like the build plate were ignored in the effort to get the re-bodied car out the door and back on the track for the customer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The good stuff.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Well, I managed to get some opinions in there among the ooh&#8217;s.\u00a0 Gino Giugno&#8217;s &#8216;Giulietta Sprint Veloce Zagato&#8217; has several pages of images of this car from the late 1950&#8217;s and the car seen here really does look exactly like those pictures.\u00a0 Where&#8217;s it been all these years?<\/p>\n<p>Some SVZ&#8217;s I&#8217;ve tracked.\u00a0 Read the last one carefully -I&#8217;ve found two of the same car!<\/p>\n<p><a
